Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced Is Much More Than a Facelift | IGN Preview

Rifts are one of the most interesting additions in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. There are 4 of them scattered across the open world, each one dropping Edward Kenway into an alternate reality that asks a pointed "what if?" question about the story. They're optional, they're easy to miss, and they're worth every minute.

How many Rifts are there in Black Flag Resynced?

There are exactly 4 Rifts in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. Each one unlocks at a different point in the main campaign, so you can't just beeline for all of them at the start. The good news: once a Rift unlocks, it stays on the map permanently and you can complete it whenever you feel like it.

Visually, Rifts are impossible to confuse with anything else in the game. They appear as floating, glitchy pillars that look completely out of place against the Caribbean backdrop. Spot something that looks like reality is breaking down around a cluster of stone columns and you've found one.

tip
Rifts only appear after you hit specific story sequences, so if you're hunting them early and coming up empty, keep pushing the main campaign forward.

Where to find every Rift in Black Flag Resynced

Each Rift is tied to a different narrative thread from the base game, and the alternate realities they send you into are genuinely worth exploring for the storytelling alone. Here's the full breakdown of every Rift, including exact map coordinates and when they unlock.

Wayward Souls (Sequence 04)

Wayward Souls is the first Rift you can access and sits at coordinates 825, 429 on the southern tip of Great Inagua. It opens up after you complete Sequence 04, making it one of the earlier diversions available. The scenario explores an alternate version of Edward's relationship with Caroline, and it's a strong emotional hook that sets the tone for the rest of the Rifts.

Wayward Desires (Sequence 08)

Wayward Desires unlocks after Sequence 08 and sits at 604, 784, on an island north of Nassau. This one puts Blackbeard at the center, imagining what Nassau might have looked like if he'd taken the King's pardon and turned it into his own kingdom. Given how central Blackbeard is to the early game, this alternate take hits differently once you've seen how his story actually plays out.

tip
The island north of Nassau where Wayward Desires spawns is small and easy to sail past. Keep an eye out for the glitchy visual effect on approach rather than relying purely on coordinates.

Wayward Minds (Sequence 11)

Wayward Minds is the third Rift and arguably the most compelling premise of the bunch. It unlocks after Sequence 11 and is located at 14, 559 on the north-east tip of Sacrifice Island. The scenario asks what would have happened if Mary Read had walked away from the Assassins entirely. Given how her arc concludes in the main story, this one carries real weight.

True Purpose (Post-Epilogue)

True Purpose is the final Rift and the only one that requires you to finish the entire game first, including the epilogue. It's found at 363, 176, on an island east of Misteriosa. The scenario flips the whole game's moral framework by asking what would have happened if you'd sided with the Templars. As a post-game reward, it's a fitting capstone to the Rift storyline.

What order should you do the Rifts in?

The natural unlock order (Wayward Souls, Wayward Desires, Wayward Minds, True Purpose) is the intended sequence and the one that makes the most narrative sense. Each Rift builds on your understanding of the main characters, so completing them roughly in line with your campaign progress gives each alternate scenario more impact.

If you're doing a second playthrough focused on completion, you can knock out Wayward Souls and Wayward Desires back-to-back once you hit Sequence 08, then grab Wayward Minds at Sequence 11, and save True Purpose for after the credits roll.

tip
All four Rifts are entirely optional, but they're among the most story-rich side content in the game. If you're investing time in a full playthrough, these are worth prioritizing over standard collectibles.
