The Rich Get Richer challenge in Balatro flips the usual scoring logic on its head. Instead of stacking Chips freely, your Chip total is capped at whatever cash you're holding before the multiplication phase kicks in. That one rule transforms every decision you make, from which Jokers you chase to how you handle Boss Blinds. Understanding this mechanic deeply is the difference between a comfortable win and a frustrating dead end.

Rich Get Richer deck select
Rich Get Richer is one of Balatro's Challenge Decks, a special category of runs that impose unique rule sets on top of the standard game. This particular challenge starts you with $100 in cash and two economy-focused Jokers: Seed Money (raises the interest cap to $10 per round) and Money Tree (raises the interest cap to $20 per round once fully upgraded after ten consecutive rounds of maxed interest). The deck itself is a standard 52-card setup with no suit or rank restrictions.
The defining rule is simple but punishing: your Chips cannot exceed your current dollar amount before the scoring calculation begins. If you're sitting on $40 when you play a hand, no matter how many Chip-boosting Jokers you have, only 40 Chips count toward your score. Everything above that cap is wasted.
Because your cash balance directly controls your maximum Chip output, money generation is the single most important priority in every run. Here's how to build a strong economy:
Certain consumables can inject cash directly into your run:
Because Chips are capped by your cash balance, the smartest path to high scores is building your Mult side of the equation as high as possible. Mult is completely unrestricted by the challenge rule.
| Joker | Effect | Why It Works Here |
|---|---|---|
| Green Joker | +1 Mult per hand played, -1 per discard | Grows passively with every hand |
| Spare Trousers | +2 Mult when played hand contains Two Pair | Rewards consistent hand building |
| Fortune Teller | +1 Mult per Tarot card used this run | Pairs well with Temperance and The Hermit |
| Bootstraps | +2 Mult per $5 held | Directly tied to your money pile |
Lucky Cat is a standout pick. It gains X0.25 Mult every time a Lucky card successfully triggers. Lucky cards also have a 1-in-15 chance to award $20 directly, meaning each trigger potentially raises both your XMult and your Chip cap. That double benefit makes Lucky Cat one of the most efficient Jokers in the entire challenge.
Bull adds +2 Chips for each $1 you hold. In a normal run this is underwhelming, but in Rich Get Richer it actually serves a specific purpose: it fills your Chip total up to the cap set by your money. You won't exceed the limit, but Bull ensures you reach it consistently. Think of it as a floor-raiser rather than a ceiling-breaker.

Lucky Cat XMult stacking up
Not every Joker that looks powerful belongs in this run. Several common picks become liabilities under the Chip cap rule.
Two Boss Blinds are especially dangerous in this challenge:

The Ox resets your cash to zero
Rich Get Richer is the only challenge in Balatro where scoring a 0-point hand is possible. If your money drops to $0 or below before a hand is scored, your Chip total is capped at zero, making it mathematically impossible to meet any blind requirement. This is not just a theoretical edge case. Boss Blinds like The Ox and The Tooth can trigger this outcome mid-run if you're caught off guard.
This mechanic reinforces the challenge's core philosophy: players who maintain and grow their wealth will accelerate through the game, while those who let their money slip will find every subsequent blind harder to beat until the run collapses entirely.
