Overview
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, developed by Sledgehammer Games and released on November 3, 2014, takes the franchise into a near-future setting where Private Military Corporations have replaced traditional armies. At the center of it all sits Jonathan Irons, founder of the Atlas Corporation, played by Kevin Spacey in a performance that gives the campaign a cinematic weight rare for the series.
The game's central conceit, that PMCs now redraw borders and rewrite the rules of war, gives the story a political edge that feels grounded despite the sci-fi trappings. Sledgehammer spent three years on development, the longest cycle in franchise history at that point, and the extra time shows in the world-building and the feel of the combat systems.

How does the exoskeleton change gameplay?
The exoskeleton is the defining mechanic of Advanced Warfare, and it reshapes movement in ways that go well beyond a cosmetic upgrade. Boost jumps add verticality to every map, grappling hooks open new flanking routes, and cloaking abilities create entirely new stealth options mid-firefight. The result is a Call of Duty that rewards spatial awareness as much as raw aim.

Key exoskeleton abilities include:
- Boost jump and double-jump verticality
- Grappling hook traversal
- Cloaking for covert approaches
- Biomechanical strength and speed buffs
- Exo shield for defensive play
These mechanics carry across campaign, multiplayer, and co-op modes, meaning the movement vocabulary you build in the story directly transfers to competitive play. That consistency is one of the smarter design decisions in the game.

An arsenal built for the future
Advanced Warfare arms players with directed-energy weapons alongside conventional firearms, and the distinction matters. Directed-energy weapons operate on different damage models and suit different playstyles, so loadout choices carry real weight. Hoverbikes and specialized drones appear throughout the campaign, reinforcing the sense that this is a world where military technology has genuinely leapt forward.
The Supply Drop system introduced here also changed how Call of Duty handled gear customization. Players earn randomized weapon variants and cosmetic items through gameplay, a system that generated significant discussion about balance given that some variants carry stat differences.
Multiplayer and the Gold Edition
The Gold Edition bundles the base game with the Havoc DLC pack, which adds four multiplayer maps and the Exo Zombies co-op mode. Exo Zombies carries the exoskeleton movement into a wave-based survival format, giving the mode a faster, more vertical feel than traditional zombie modes in the series.
Multiplayer builds on the exoskeleton framework with Exo Abilities as a selectable layer on top of standard perks and scorestreaks. Maps are designed with the boost-jump ceiling in mind, featuring elevated platforms and routes that would be dead space in a ground-based Call of Duty. Cross-platform multiplayer is not supported on the Windows version.
