Overview
Halo Infinite is a first-person shooter developed by 343 Industries, released on December 8, 2021, and the sixth mainline entry in the long-running Halo series. The campaign ditches the linear level structure of previous games in favor of a semi-open world set on Zeta Halo, a damaged Forerunner ringworld now occupied by the Banished. Master Chief starts the story at a serious disadvantage: six months after a crushing defeat at the hands of Atriox, he's recovered from the wreckage of space by a lone UNSC pilot and dropped into a fight he's badly outnumbered for.
The narrative introduces two key new characters alongside Chief. The Weapon is an AI built specifically to capture and delete Cortana, and her failure to self-delete after completing that mission forms one of the campaign's central mysteries. Escharum, the Banished war chief running operations on the ring, serves as a genuinely menacing antagonist whose presence is felt throughout the story. A third threat, the Harbinger, adds another layer to the conflict by pursuing the release of an ancient imprisoned species the Forerunners sealed away.
Gameplay and mechanics
Zeta Halo functions as a large open zone where players capture Forward Operating Bases, rescue stranded Marines, take down Banished outposts, and tackle story missions that unlock as the campaign progresses. The structure rewards exploration without forcing it, so players who want to push the story forward can, while those who want to clear every corner of the ring have plenty to find.

Key combat tools available to Master Chief include:
- Grappleshot for traversal and pulling weapons or enemies
- Threat Sensor for detecting enemies through cover
- Drop Wall for deployable cover in firefights
- Repulsor for deflecting projectiles and sending objects flying
- Shield Core upgrades tied to collectible Spartan Cores
The Grappleshot is the standout addition. It turns movement into a skill expression that changes how every encounter plays out, whether you're swinging across chasms, yanking a weapon from a Grunt's hands, or closing distance on a flying enemy fast enough to punch it out of the air.

World and setting
Zeta Halo itself is the most physically varied environment in the series. The surface opens up into sweeping grassy plains, dense jungle sections, and cavernous underground Forerunner structures that feel genuinely ancient. The contrast between the ring's natural beauty and the Banished's industrial occupation gives the world a distinct visual identity that holds up across the campaign's runtime.

Marines scattered across the ring aren't just flavor. Rescuing them and assigning them to your active squad gives combat encounters more tactical weight, and their dialogue adds life to a world that could otherwise feel empty between major story beats.

Campaign co-op and replayability
Campaign Network Co-Op supports up to four players across Xbox and PC, letting full fireteams tackle the open world and story missions together. The mode includes 14 exclusive Achievements tied to co-op play, giving returning players a concrete reason to run through content they've already seen.
Mission Replay lets players return to specific story missions after completing them, making it easier to hunt collectibles, revisit story moments, or try encounters on higher difficulty settings without starting a full run from scratch. Both features extend the campaign's lifespan considerably beyond a single playthrough.
