Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 brings back DMZ as its extraction-focused mode, and it is more layered than anything in previous entries. You drop into the Hajin Exclusion Zone, loot and fight your way through over 60 named locations, and try to get out alive with your haul. Lose your gear on the way out and it is gone. Make it to the extraction helicopter and everything you carried comes home with you.
What is DMZ mode in MW4?
DMZ is a risk-and-reward extraction mode built around three pillars: looting, objectives, and survival. Every run is called a deployment. You drop into Hajin, scavenge containers, complete Dynamic Operations, deal with AI enemies and rival Operators, then fight your way to a green-smoke extraction point.
Progress carries over between deployments through your Forward Operating Base (FOB), which is your permanent home base. Levels, gear, and unlocks all persist there, so even a run that ends with you going down still moves you forward on the DMZ Player Level track, which runs from Level 1 to Level 70.

FOB station layout at base
How does the FOB work?
The FOB is where everything outside a deployment lives. Nine stations are available from the start, with five more unlocking as you level up.
| Station | Unlocks at | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Operators (Active Duty) | Start | Recruit Operators, assign Trait Points, choose who deploys |
| DMZ Orders | Start | Guided missions that pay resources, loot, and cash |
| Stash / Loadout | Start | Shared storage and loadout builder |
| Firing Range | Start | Test weapons on targets from under 10 m to past 100 m |
| Survival Kits | Start | Themed loot packs that open straight into your Stash |
| Bounty Leaderboard | Start | Top 50 Most Wanted and Top 50 Bounty Hunters |
| DMZ Progression | Start | The Level 1 to 70 track of recipes, upgrades, and skins |
| 3D Printer | DMZ Level 2 | Craft gear and ingredients, upgrade FOB stations |
| Boss Board | After 2nd Order | Lieutenant intel, Commander info, boss challenge progress |
| Vendor | DMZ Level 5 | Guns and items for DMZ Cash, stock refreshes over time |
| Gunsmith | DMZ Level 10 | Build and mod weapons with DMZ Cash |
| Dog Tag Case | DMZ Level 20 | Display Dog Tags from players you killed and extracted |
Read your DMZ Orders before every deployment. You can often knock out an Order and a Dynamic Operation in the same run, which doubles your XP and reward efficiency.
Where should you land in Hajin?
Hajin has more than 60 named locations spread across what used to be North and South Korea. Every location carries a Threat level that reflects AI difficulty only, not other players.
Start here (Low threat): Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital, and Songdo Wharf. These are the safest places to learn looting and Dynamic Ops without getting overwhelmed.
Step up to these (Medium threat): Wolves Stadium, Hajin River Heights, Cheonwang Peak Array, and the Rice Mill. More enemies, better loot.
Leave these for later: Chang-san Air Base (Critical exterior, Extreme bunker), The Grid (Critical, with Nenshin Tech Complex at Extreme), and the 14th Political Prison's Citadel (Critical). The Haneul Nuclear Reactor adds radiation on top of High-threat enemies, so bring a gas mask and radiation gear before heading there.

All DMZ bosses: Lieutenants and Commanders
There are two boss categories in DMZ. Lieutenants are elite enemies that roam specific areas. Commanders are the three massive threats always present somewhere on the map.
What are all the Lieutenants in MW4 DMZ?
There are 10 confirmed Lieutenants in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. Three have named backstories and confirmed patrol areas.
| Boss | Category | Known Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Gorani | Lieutenant | Patrols woods above Hanrim Village in ghillie camouflage, carries an M4, escorts ambush from brush |
| Bale | Lieutenant | Based at Chang-san Air Base, Spetsnaz veteran with elite troops on the approaches |
| The Warden | Lieutenant | Works the northern hills, has been linked to a sealed door under NuriGO Mall |
| The Chemist | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
| Jin-Tae | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
| The Doctor | Lieutenant | Unlocks after completing the Human Intel DMZ Orders chapter |
| Iskra | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
| Scavenger | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
| Roze | Lieutenant | Unlocks after completing the Underground DMZ Orders chapter |
| Jang-Ui | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
| Warden | Lieutenant | Intel unlock condition TBD |
Defeating a Lieutenant pays 10,000 DMZ Cash (one-time reward) and drops a Dog Tag Case. Pick up that case and your position broadcasts to every player on the map. Plan to head for extraction the moment you grab it.
Lieutenants also have a rare chance to drop their personal weapon or a Key to a nearby loot room. After testing multiple Lieutenant encounters, the weapon drop is not guaranteed, so do not count on it.
What are the Commanders in MW4 DMZ?
Three Commanders patrol Hajin at all times. You cannot buy intel on them at the Boss Board, and they show up when you get close enough that your Team Leader calls it out.
| Commander | Type | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Colossus | Armored soldier | Seven-foot enemy with a minigun firing depleted uranium rounds |
| Deathstalker | Autonomous drone | Helicopter-sized drone with two machine-gun turrets |
| NK Battle Tank | Vehicle | North Korean battle tank on high-alert patrol |
Killing a Commander for the first time pays cash. Extracting after the kill earns rare 3D Printer Ingredients. Standard weapons barely scratch them. A captured SAM site fires at enemy aircraft automatically, which is the most reliable way to deal with Deathstalker, but walk too far from it and the enemy recaptures it.
First kill of each Commander pays cash. Every extraction after a Commander kill adds rare printer ingredients to your After Action Report.
How to find Lieutenants in MW4 DMZ
Two methods work reliably.
Lieutenant Hunt Towers: Look for an orange tower icon on the Tac-Map. Climb the tower and activate the console at the top. It marks the nearest Lieutenant on your map and counts as a Side Op, paying XP and intel. Enemies sometimes guard the tower, so clear them before climbing.
Boss Board intel: After completing a set of boss challenges at the FOB, you can purchase intel on a specific Lieutenant for 25,000 DMZ Cash. The mark lasts one deployment. This only works for Lieutenants, not Commanders.
How do Operators and Traits work?
Each Operator you deploy as has its own Dog Tag that levels from Steel I through Onyx III, covering 18 ranks total. Every rank earns one Trait Point, which you spend across three trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist.
Trait picks are permanent for that Operator until you Prestige it, so spend with a plan. Each tree holds 22 Traits (6 Major, 16 Minor), and you can put at most 9 points into a single tree per Operator.
| Tree | Sample Traits |
|---|---|
| Warfighter | Adrenaline Burst (kill refreshes tactical sprint), Quick Fix (faster health regen after kills), Possum (one self-revive per match) |
| Scout | Investor (more cash on extraction), UAV Upgrade (longer wider UAVs), Field Crafting (craft from Common resources mid-deployment) |
| Survivalist | Faster Revive, Free Revive (first wound repairs itself), Die Hard (reaching exfil in Last Stand calls it in) |
Once an Operator reaches Onyx III (18 Trait Points), you can Prestige it. Prestige resets Traits and awards a random Permanent Prestige Trait. The first Prestige costs 200,000 DMZ Cash plus 2 Rare weapons with 3 attachment slots, a Rare carrier, Rare backpack, and 4 Rare Ingredients.
How to exfil in MW4 DMZ
Here's the short answer: find green smoke, call the Twin Heli, hold the area until it lands, board it.
The longer version matters more. Exfil sites come from a pool of locations, and other squads know this too. Check the surrounding area before you call the helicopter in. Camping exfil points is one of the most common ways players lose full inventories.
Other extraction options exist: a Fulton balloon or a Flare. Flares are loud and visible from a long distance, so expect company if you use one.
Anything outside a Secure Slot in your backpack is lost if you do not make it out. The Medium Backpack adds Secure Slots and is worth crafting at the 3D Printer (costs 50 Synthetics and 5 Rigid Synthetics) as soon as possible. Every Recipe and Weapon Manual in your bag unlocks automatically on extraction and pays 5,000 DMZ Cash each.
What happens when you die in DMZ?
Your Operator goes MIA. Everything outside your Secure Slots is lost. Back at the FOB, you pay DMZ Cash from your Bank to recover the Operator with its Traits intact, or dismiss it and start fresh. The XP from the run still counts regardless.
The more Traits an Operator has, the more an MIA recovery costs. This is why Secure Slots matter so much: protecting your best loot keeps a bad run from becoming a total loss.
How to level up fast in MW4 DMZ
DMZ Progression runs separately from Multiplayer and Warzone XP. Nothing from those modes feeds into your DMZ level.
The fastest sources of DMZ XP per deployment:
- Looting containers (steady and reliable from the first minute)
- Completing Dynamic Operations (each Supply Drop in a single deployment gets progressively better, so start ops early)
- Side Ops like UAV Towers, SAM sites, and Lieutenant Hunt Towers
- Lieutenant kills (big XP payout)
- Player kills (highest XP per kill, but comes with bounty risk)
A balanced run that hits Objectives, Combat, and Looting together reaches an S rating on the After Action Report, which maximizes XP. Looting alone will not get you there.

Common mistakes new DMZ players make
- Ignoring Threat levels before landing. The compass shows the current area's Threat level. Dropping into a Critical zone on your first run because it looked interesting on the map is how you lose your starting gear in two minutes.
- Leaving the Dog Tag Case on a Lieutenant without a plan. Picking it up broadcasts your position. If you are not ready to extract immediately, you are handing other squads a free target.
- Not starting a Dynamic Op early. Each Supply Drop in a deployment is better than the last. Starting your first op in the final five minutes means you only ever get Common drops.
- Filling your backpack with 3D Printer Ingredients and no Secure Slots. Resources sit in their own pouch and never take a slot. Ingredients do take slots and are lost on death outside Secure Slots. Know the difference before you loot.
- Skipping the After Action Report. It shows exactly which activities paid the most XP and what unlocked. Two minutes reviewing it before the next deployment is never wasted.

Frequently asked questions
Can you play MW4 DMZ solo? Yes. Deploy alone or turn on Squad Fill to add two random players. You can toggle Squad Fill on or off at the Ready Up screen before every deployment.
Is DMZ free to play? DMZ is a mode inside Modern Warfare 4. Early Access requires a digital pre-order. There is no confirmed separate free version.
What does the Boss Board do? The Boss Board unlocks after your second DMZ Order. It tracks your Lieutenant and Commander challenge progress and lets you purchase deployment-specific Lieutenant intel for 25,000 DMZ Cash once you complete the required challenges.
When does the Gunsmith unlock? At DMZ Level 10. You need to extract with a weapon's Weapon Manual once to unlock that gun for purchase. A base M4 costs around 5,000 DMZ Cash.
Does dying in DMZ lose all your progress? You lose gear outside your Secure Slots and your Operator goes MIA, but all XP earned during the run still counts toward your DMZ level and Operator Dog Tag rank.
