Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 introduces DMZ as its flagship extraction mode, and it plays nothing like standard multiplayer. You deploy to the massive Hajin map, gather resources, complete objectives, and get out before enemy forces end your run. Every decision you make before dropping in, from which Operator you bring to how you've spent your Trait Points, determines whether you exfil with a full backpack or respawn from scratch.

What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?

DMZ is an extraction mode exclusive to Modern Warfare 4 where you operate as an off-the-books asset in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. The loop is straightforward: deploy, loot, complete objectives, extract. What makes it deep is the Operator progression system layered on top. Your Operators grow between deployments, earning Trait Points that you spend to specialize them, and losing one to an MIA situation has real consequences.

This is not a mode you can play passively. The Hajin map is large, enemy AI is aggressive, and other players are hunting you just as hard as you're hunting them.

How do Operators work in DMZ?

Every deployment requires you to assign one of your Active Duty Operators. You start with two Active Duty slots, and a third unlocks as your DMZ Player Level increases (Vault Edition owners begin with three slots immediately).

Operators are more than cosmetic choices. Each one develops individually through DMZ XP earned on deployments. As an Operator gains experience, their Dog Tag quality improves through tiers from Steel up to Onyx, with three quality levels at each stage. Better Dog Tags unlock Trait Points you can invest to build specialized loadout identities.

When you recover an MIA Operator, they keep all selected Traits but lose their gear entirely. You'll need to equip a fresh loadout before they can deploy again. Alternatively, you can dismiss the Operator and recruit a replacement, though you lose all their progression.

The mistake most players make early on is deploying their best Operator into risky situations before they have a recovery fund built up. Run lower-stakes deployments first to stockpile DMZ Cash.

What are the three Trait Trees and which should you invest in?

Every successful exfil earns your Operator one Trait Point. Each point can be spent across three trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist. Any given Operator can earn a maximum of 18 Trait Points, and once a Trait is chosen, alternatives on the same branch are locked out permanently.

Here's the short answer on which tree fits which role:

Trait TreeBest ForStandout Traits
WarfighterDirect combat and survivabilityAdrenaline Burst, Viper Sense, Possum (one-per-match self-revive)
ScoutLooting, resource gathering, exfil speedExtra Container Loot, Thermal Padding (hides from UAVs), UAV Upgrade
SurvivalistRecovery, revives, exfil safetyMetabolism (health regen), Die Hard (auto-calls exfil near pickup), Faster Revive

Most Traits are hidden and randomized as Operators progress, so you won't always know exactly what you're getting. The general strategy is to decide on a role for each Operator before you start investing, then commit to one tree early to unlock its initial Trait benefit as soon as possible.

Trust me on this one: spreading points evenly across all three trees early on wastes the compounding benefit of specialization. Pick a lane.

How does Operator Prestige work?

Once an Operator reaches 18 Trait Points and you meet the gear and DMZ Cash requirements, you can Prestige them. Prestige resets all Trait Points but permanently applies a randomly selected Prestige Trait to that Operator. This Prestige Trait stays attached to the Operator even if you change their skin or move them to a different Active Duty slot.

After the first Prestige, you can continue earning Trait Points and Prestige again. Each successive Prestige level requires more valuable gear and a higher DMZ Cash cost. Once you've completed three Prestige tiers, you can keep going indefinitely, which also lets you replace an existing Prestige Trait with a new random one if you're not satisfied with what you have.

Prestiging multiple Operators unlocks special calling cards and classified rewards.

What FOB Stations do you start with and how do you unlock the rest?

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is your command center between deployments. It starts sparse and expands as your DMZ Player Level increases. Some Stations are available immediately; others require leveling or completing specific objectives.

Stations available from the start

  • Operators (Active Duty): Manage your roster, check Operator status, upgrade Traits, and select who deploys.
  • Stash / Loadout: Store looted weapons, gear, and crafting materials extracted from previous runs.
  • DMZ Orders: Mission Directives that guide your progression through the Exclusion Zone and reward DMZ Cash and loot on completion.
  • Firing Range: Test weapons before deploying, identical in function to the firing range in other Call of Duty modes.
  • Survival Kits: Themed supply packs containing armor, tacticals, medical supplies, and ammo. Unpack them to add contents to your stash.
  • Bounty Leaderboard: Tracks the top 50 most wanted players and top 50 bounty hunters. Kill enough Operators and you become Wanted; a Hunter can then track you down for a DMZ Cash reward if they exfil with your Dog Tag.
  • Deploy: The station you use to drop into Hajin.
  • DMZ Progression: Tracks your Player Level and associated rewards.

How does the Gunsmith work differently in DMZ?

The Gunsmith Station in DMZ shares weapon leveling progression with multiplayer, so any attachment unlocks you earn in one mode carry over to the other. The key difference is that equipping attachments in DMZ costs DMZ Cash, even if you've already unlocked them through leveling. Cosmetic changes are free.

Weapons you build in the Gunsmith have five attachment slots. Weapons you extract from the field can have up to eight. Extracted weapons can be brought into the Gunsmith as a single-instance weapon, but if you're eliminated in DMZ while carrying it, it's gone along with any upgrades you applied.

To purchase specific weapons from the Gunsmith, you first need to find and extract the corresponding Weapon Manual. Once extracted, you can buy that weapon as many times as you want. Weapon blueprints, including the one from the MW4 beta, get one free use in DMZ. Lose it, and you can rebuy it at a reduced rate, but the freebie is a one-time deal.

You can also share weapons with squadmates by carrying an extra weapon in your backpack and dropping it for them during a deployment.

How do Lieutenants and Commanders work on the Boss Board?

The Boss Board Station unlocks after completing your second DMZ Order. From there, you can purchase intel on Lieutenants, which are high-value AI targets scattered across Hajin. Each Lieutenant carries a unique loadout with a signature weapon that has a chance to drop on elimination. They can also drop keys to locked locations where their signature weapon may be found if they didn't drop it directly.

Intel is single-use. If you miss the Lieutenant during a deployment, you buy the intel again next time. Collecting a Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case after elimination broadcasts your location to every other player on the map, so extract immediately if you pick one up.

Commanders represent the highest tier of Boss Board targets and include threats like tanks, massive drones, and a heavily armored soldier armed with a depleted uranium minigun. Plan accordingly.

Common mistakes new DMZ players make

  • Deploying your best Operator before you have recovery funds. Build DMZ Cash reserves first.
  • Spending Trait Points without a plan. Decide on a role before investing a single point.
  • Ignoring DMZ Orders early on. They reward DMZ Cash and loot, and the Boss Board doesn't unlock until you complete your second one.
  • Leaving the FOB without checking the Vendor. The daily rotation resets, and you might miss a key piece of gear you could have bought cheaply.
  • Forgetting to unpack Survival Kits. They sit unused at the Station until you manually unpack them into your stash.

FAQ

Can I use the same Operator in multiple Active Duty slots? No. Each Operator can only occupy one Active Duty slot at a time.

Does DMZ Operator Prestige affect my main player Prestige? No. DMZ Operator Prestige is completely separate from both the standard player Prestige system and DMZ Player Level progression.

What happens to my resources if I'm eliminated before extracting? Anything in your backpack at the time of elimination is lost. Resources like DMZ Cash and 3D Printer Ingredients that were already banked at the FOB are safe.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Game Pass? No. Modern Warfare 4 is not on Xbox Game Pass at launch. Online multiplayer does require a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately.
