Overview
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a full remaster of the 1999 PlayStation kart racer originally developed by Naughty Dog, rebuilt from the ground up by Beenox and published by Activision. Released on June 21, 2019, across PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, it brings back the complete original game with overhauled visuals, reworked audio, and a suite of new content layered on top of the authentic CTR foundation.
The remaster preserves everything that defined the original: the 18 classic tracks, the full adventure mode, and the drift-boost system that rewarded skilled players with chained boosts capable of maintaining top speed through entire laps. Beenox didn't flatten the skill ceiling to modernize the game. The mechanics stay demanding, and mastering the boost system still separates casual runs from competitive ones.
At launch, the game won Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards 2019 and took Best Racing Game honors from multiple outlets. That recognition wasn't just nostalgia talking. The remaster held up as a competitive kart racer on its own terms.
Gameplay and mechanics
The core of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is its boost system, which works differently from most kart racers. Holding a drift long enough builds boost power, and releasing at the right moment chains into the next drift for continuous acceleration. The system has a high floor and a real ceiling, meaning players who put in the time will consistently outpace those who don't.
Key gameplay features include:
- Adventure mode with boss races and time trials
- Local split-screen multiplayer for up to 4 players
- Online racing with full matchmaking support
- Character customization with kart skins and decals
- Grand Prix seasonal content with new tracks and racers
The Adventure mode puts players through a series of cups, boss encounters, and challenge races across Crash's world. Beating bosses unlocks them as playable characters, and completing time trials opens up additional rewards. It's a full single-player campaign, not a stripped-down tutorial.
What does the Grand Prix add?
Post-launch, Beenox ran a series of free Grand Prix events that added characters, tracks, and cosmetics. Emperor Velo and the Gasmoxia-themed Drive-Thru Danger track are among the additions that expanded the roster and track list beyond the original game's content. These additions pulled from Crash Nitro Kart as well, blending both games' rosters into a single package.
The Grand Prix structure gave the game a live-service layer without paywalling core content. Challenges and time-limited rewards kept the player base engaged across multiple content drops after release.
Visual and audio design
The visual overhaul is the most immediately obvious change from the original. Beenox rebuilt the game's environments and character models with current-generation fidelity while keeping the art direction faithful to the source material. Tracks like Cortex Castle and Papu's Pyramid look exactly as players remember them, just sharper and more detailed.
The audio received the same treatment. The original soundtrack returns in a fully remastered form, and character voice lines were re-recorded to match the visual quality of the new presentation.
Multiplayer and social features
Online multiplayer was absent from the 1999 original, so its inclusion here is one of the remaster's most meaningful additions. Players can race against others across all three platforms using full matchmaking, and local split-screen remains intact for couch play. The combination makes Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled one of the more complete kart racing packages available, covering both the competitive online space and the local multiplayer experience that defined the original game's appeal.
