How do you unlock the Gwen Kraber fight?
Gwen Kraber is not available from the start. She sits behind the Frozen Eldertree quest chain, which only opens after you have completed at least 9 out of 20 House Celeste faction quests. The four specific quests you must finish to unlock the chain are:
- The Hellhounds
- Legendary Wolf
- Queen of the Silkspun Citadel
- Abandoned Factory
Once those are done alongside enough other House Celeste quests to hit the 9/20 threshold, the Frozen Eldertree chain becomes available, including The Eldertree quest that sends you to Roothold.

How to clear Roothold before the boss fight
Roothold is a multi-layered fort packed with soldiers who tend to group together. Before Gwen Kraber becomes your main concern, you need to bring that soldier count down to zero percent. A bow build with Explosive Arrows tears through grouped enemies quickly. The Infinite Arrows Abyss Gear pairs well here since it keeps your ammunition flowing without interruption.
Once the soldier count hits zero, Gwen Kraber takes her position at the top of the camp and the real fight begins.
What attacks does Gwen Kraber use?
Gwen Kraber is fast and her spear gives her deceptive range. Getting hit by the wrong attack at the wrong moment can empty your health bar before you have time to react. These are the attacks documented across multiple sources:

What is the best strategy to beat Gwen Kraber?
The fight comes down to patience and punish windows. Gwen Kraber has less health than most bosses at her tier, which means she folds quickly once you land consistent damage. The problem is getting those openings.
Here is what works best based on community testing and source documentation:
- Heavy attacks stunlock her. Chain heavy hits whenever she finishes an attack string. She cannot easily escape a sustained heavy combo.
- Dodge forward or to the side to avoid her dashes. Dodging backward tends to leave you outside punish range.
- Perfect blocks stagger her briefly, but the window is short. Use the stagger to land one or two hits, not a full combo.
- Attack between her freezing stab strings. She still moves and jabs during downtime, but this is when she is most vulnerable to follow-up combos.
- Abyss Gears with active abilities add extra stagger opportunities.

Defeating Gwen Kraber gives you two immediate rewards:
- Abyss Artifact x1
- Icewing Plate Armor
The fight does not fully end there. A follow-up objective triggers immediately after you collect the Abyss Artifact: find Gwen Kraber's gear. Check the nearby wooden shelter and you will find the Frostfang spear waiting for you.
