EA Sports College Football 27 added 13 Legend Templates to Road to Glory in the September 3, 2026 Title Update, and they change the mode in a real way. Instead of spending 20 minutes tweaking sliders before you even see a snap, you pick a template built around a real football legend and get a preset height, weight, Archetype, and potential setup that matches their style. The result is a faster, more focused career start with a clear identity from day one.

What are Legend Templates in Road to Glory?

Legend Templates are preset player builds tied to college football legends. Each one comes with a fixed height, weight, Archetype, and potential configuration based on the featured player. You still develop your career from scratch, but you start with a framework that reflects a specific football style rather than a blank slate.

They are not locked builds. Think of them as a starting point with personality. The development arc is still yours to shape.

tip
If you already know what position you want to play, templates save a lot of setup time. Pick the one that matches your style and focus on the career itself.

All 13 Legend Templates: Full List

The September 3 update introduced templates across seven positions, covering both offense and defense.

That is a solid spread. Defensive players finally have real options beyond just picking a position and hoping the Archetype fits, and the tight end additions give RTG a position that was previously pretty underrepresented.

Which Legend Template should you pick?

Here's the short answer: pick based on how you actually want to play, not based on the name. A J.J. Watt career and a Sean Taylor career feel completely different even though both are defensive builds.

Best defensive templates

J.J. Watt is the easiest recommendation for anyone who wants to control the line of scrimmage. His template is built around power and disruption. You are rushing the quarterback, stopping runs before they develop, and racking up tackles for loss on a regular basis. The impact is obvious every single game, which makes him satisfying even in a losing season.

Sean Taylor is the more technical choice. Free Safety puts you in the secondary, reading the quarterback and reacting to routes rather than attacking the line. The appeal here is interceptions, big hits, and defensive highlights that come from anticipation rather than brute force. If you are comfortable in coverage and enjoy making plays on the ball, Taylor might actually be the most entertaining template in the entire update.

Luke Kuechly sits between those two extremes. Linebacker gives you run-stopping duties, pass coverage responsibilities, and the ability to make plays in almost every defensive situation. The mistake most players make with linebacker builds is expecting the same instant impact as an edge rusher. Kuechly rewards players who read the offense before the snap.

Derrick Johnson is the other linebacker option. Both Johnson and Kuechly cover similar ground, so the choice between them comes down to the specific Archetype and potential setup each template provides.

warning
Defensive templates, especially Free Safety, require more game-reading than offensive builds. If you are new to RTG, an edge rusher or linebacker is a more forgiving starting point.

Best offensive templates

Jerome Bettis is the standout for players who want a physical running game. His template is built around power, contact balance, and clock control rather than speed. You are not going to outrun safeties with this build. You are going to run through linebackers and grind out yards when the game is on the line. For players who find speed-focused backs repetitive, Bettis offers a genuinely different feel.

Tony Gonzalez is the most unusual choice in the entire list, and that is exactly what makes him interesting. Tight end gives you a mix of route running and blocking, so you contribute to both the passing and running game depending on the situation. If you have already run three RTG careers at quarterback or wide receiver, a Gonzalez build will make the mode feel fresh. Heath Miller is the other tight end option, but Gonzalez is the better pick if receiving production is your priority.

For wide receivers, Torry Holt and Mohamed Sanu give you two distinct styles. Holt is the bigger-play option while Sanu fits a more possession-oriented role. Both are solid if you want to experience RTG from the receiving side without taking on the full responsibility of a quarterback.

Best quarterback templates

The three QB options cover different playstyles cleanly.

Arch Manning is built for players who want a traditional pocket quarterback experience. You are reading the field, going through progressions, and making decisions from the pocket. It is the most demanding QB template in terms of football IQ, but also the most rewarding if you enjoy controlling the offense from back there.

Braxton Miller is the dual-threat option. Mobility is the core of his build, so you can extend plays, pick up yards with your legs, and create outside the structure of the play. Best for players who get frustrated sitting in the pocket.

Jeremiah Smith rounds out the QB group and gives you a third option if neither Manning nor Miller fits your style.

How do Legend Templates compare by playstyle?

tip
No confirmed meta ranking exists yet for these templates. The September 3 update is recent, and full-career testing across all 13 options will take time. The recommendations above are based on playstyle fit, not raw statistical performance over a full RTG career.

Should you use a Legend Template or build custom?

For most players, yes, use a template. The main argument for going custom is if you have a very specific Archetype and attribute distribution in mind that none of the 13 templates match. Outside of that edge case, templates give you a faster start with a clearer identity.

The development path after you select a template is still entirely yours. You are not locked into anything beyond the starting setup. Templates simply remove the blank-slate paralysis and give your career a narrative hook from the first snap.

What else changed in the September 3 update?

Legend Templates were the headline RTG addition, but the September 3 Title Update also brought a few other things worth knowing about.

The EA Sports Network is a new dynamic storytelling system that replaces static news moments in both Road to Glory and Dynasty Mode. Your performances now generate personalized game previews, post-game recaps, and season coverage that changes week to week based on what you actually do on the field. Access the full stories by pressing Triangle/Y on any story in your RTG or Dynasty hub.

On the gameplay side, man coverage received targeted fixes including pass lead tuning, route running corrections for Elite Route Runners on Zig routes, and adjustments to the man press penalty system. These changes affect how your RTG career plays out defensively, especially if you picked a coverage-heavy template like Sean Taylor.

tip
The EA Sports Network feature works across both Road to Glory and Dynasty Mode. If you are running a Dynasty alongside your RTG career, both modes benefit from the new storytelling system.

New equipment was also added, including turtlenecks, guardian caps, and a full set of Nike and Under Armour cleats. Several uniform updates cover teams including Florida, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Washington among others.

If you want to squeeze the most out of the game on PC alongside these updates, the CFB 27 best PC settings guide covers optimized graphics configurations for every hardware tier. For everything else the game has to offer, the full EA Sports College Football 27 guide collection has you covered.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change your Legend Template after starting a career? Templates set your starting height, weight, Archetype, and potential. Once you begin your RTG career with a template, those baseline attributes are locked in. Choose carefully before you start.

Do Legend Templates affect your player's appearance? Templates set the physical attributes (height and weight) but you still customize your player's appearance separately.

Is J.J. Watt or Julius Peppers better for an edge rusher build? Both are edge rushers, but Watt's template leans into power and physicality while Peppers brings a different approach. After testing both against early-career offensive lines, Watt's power-based setup tends to generate more consistent pressure in the first few seasons.

Are these templates available on all platforms? Yes. The September 3, 2026 Title Update applied to all platforms where CFB 27 is available.
