Defending in EA Sports FC 27 has a different feel from anything in the recent series history, and the reason is straightforward: the AI is no longer going to bail you out. In Competitive Gameplay, automatic AI tackles are gone, AI interception reach is reduced, and Team Press stops working the moment the ball enters your defensive third. The game now asks you to switch early, protect the dangerous space, and make the tackle yourself when the moment is right.

That shift sounds simple until you realize how many defensive habits from previous FC games were built around letting the AI handle the hard part.

What changed with defending in EA FC 27?

The core change is automation removal. In Competitive Gameplay, AI defenders no longer attempt tackles automatically just because an attacker dribbles close. They hold their shape and can collect loose balls if a player runs directly into them, but the decision to challenge has to come from you.

Manual control is now meaningfully better than leaving a defender to the AI. Your controlled player has greater interception reach, faster jockey movement than in FC 26, and longer standing-tackle range when you time it correctly. The game is not simply harder to defend in. It rewards taking control sooner.

Essential defending controls

Before getting into technique, make sure your settings are right. Set Clearance Assistance to Directional so your clearances go where you aim. For the defending mode itself, Advanced Defending gives you more control: pressing X (PlayStation: Circle) performs a shoulder challenge rather than an automatic tackle.

Turn on Professional Fouls. The R1 + X input can pull down an attacker preparing a counter, and while it usually draws a yellow card, stopping a dangerous break is often worth it.

For switching, set Auto Switching Move Assistance to off. This lets you immediately change direction after switching to another player instead of carrying through the previous animation. Set Right Stick Switching to Player Relative so the game switches based on your currently selected player's position, making it much easier to land on the exact defender you want.

How do you switch defenders at the right time?

This is the single most important habit to build. Switching after the striker already controls the pass means your first input is already an emergency. Switch before the pass arrives and you have time to drop into the passing lane, match the run, and intercept manually.

L1/LB gets you to the next logical defender quickly. The Right Stick is more deliberate: when several defenders stand close together, it lets you pick exactly who you want. That matters in FC 27 because the manually controlled player has better interception reach than the same player under AI control.

You can also use Right Stick Switching to grab a striker or attacking midfielder who is already behind the ball and bring them back into the defensive shape. The AI defenders at the back continue their positioning work while you track back with the forward, reducing passing lanes without pulling your center-backs out of position.

For fullbacks specifically, L1 often will not select them when the ball is in the middle because they are not the closest player to the ball. Use the Right Stick to switch to your fullback manually and bring them toward the center. Against a narrow formation, a fullback pulled into the middle acts as an extra center-back and blocks the central route forward. Leave it to the AI and that fullback becomes a positional gap.

tip
When defending with a fullback, block the inside passing lane first. As long as the opponent cannot pass inside, they are stuck on the wing or forced into a risky ball.

How to jockey properly in EA FC 27

Jockeying is the bridge between positioning and tackling. Hold L2/LT and use movement to stay square with the attacker. The goal is not to win the ball immediately. Your first jobs are to block the direct route to goal, remove the easiest passing lane, force the attacker into a less dangerous area, and stay close enough to punish a bad touch.

Jockey speed is higher in FC 27 than it was in FC 26, so mirroring quick direction changes is more manageable. That said, Sprint Jockey carries a trade-off. Closing a large gap at full pace is fine, but arriving at full speed means the attacker can change direction while your defender is still carrying momentum. The better rhythm is: close the space quickly, slow down as you approach, then jockey the final one-on-one.

When should you make a standing tackle?

FC 27 extends the reach of manually triggered standing tackles, but that is not a reason to swing early. The best tackle comes after you have already done the difficult part.

Look for these moments:

  • The attacker takes a heavier touch and the ball moves away from their body
  • They turn into your defender
  • They commit to a predictable direction
  • You have matched their run and can attack the ball from the front or side

If you are tackling because you feel desperate rather than because the ball is genuinely available, you are probably too late and likely to give away a foul or miss entirely.

Sometimes the correct action is not tackling at all. If the attacker is outside the box, moving sideways, and has nowhere useful to pass, staying between them and goal is already winning the situation. Good manual defending often means forcing the attacker to make the first mistake rather than lunging in and creating space.

warning
Do not spam standing tackles when chasing from behind. Being physically close to the ball and having a clean tackle opportunity are two different things.

How do shoulder challenges work in FC 27?

Physical defending is still useful, but the timing requirement is stricter. Shoulder challenges work best when your defender gets side-by-side with the ball carrier, not when you are chasing directly from behind. Spamming the challenge input while trailing an attacker can cause your defender to stick out an arm and lose speed, which makes the situation worse.

The correct sequence:

  1. Catch the attacker
  2. Move alongside them
  3. Apply the challenge using your defender's physical strength
  4. Time the input

The Bruiser PlayStyle still provides an advantage in physical duels, though EA reduced the extra benefit of Bruiser+ following Closed Beta feedback. Physical defending is a positioning tool, not a chase button.

How does Teammate Contain work now?

Holding R1/RB still triggers Teammate Contain, but the AI teammate now marks the ball carrier from a slightly greater distance than before. It is a delay mechanism, not a ball-winning tool.

A good use pattern:

  • Use Teammate Contain to slow the ball carrier
  • Control a second player to cover a dangerous passing lane
  • Read where the attacker wants to go
  • Switch to the containing defender when it is time to apply real pressure

Expecting that second defender to walk forward and tackle for you is the mistake. FC 27 is specifically designed so you eventually need to switch and defend manually.

Does Team Press still work in your own box?

No. Team Press has no effect while the ball is inside your defensive third. EA found that players were using it to make AI teammates automatically close down attackers near their own goal, which directly conflicted with the more manual defensive philosophy in FC 27.

Higher up the pitch, Team Press remains useful. Midfielders and attackers can pressure opponents more aggressively, and defenders can step closer to marked players. The risk is that stepping defenders toward their assignments leaves more space behind the defensive line, so Team Press should be a deliberate attempt to win the ball higher up the field, not something activated every time possession changes.

How do you use the Offside Trap effectively?

At kick-off and during sustained defensive pressure, your defensive line can drop too deep, creating a gap between midfield and defense that gives the opponent easy forward passes. Pressing D-pad up twice activates the Offside Trap, pushing the team forward by around 5 meters.

This is not only a kick-off tool. If your defensive line is already deep and the opponent has the ball from the side or facing away from goal with no obvious forward pass available, triggering the Offside Trap reduces the space for their next attack. A deeper line creates more distance between midfield and defense, which makes it easier for opponents to find their forwards.

How do you use your CDM to control the middle?

Your CDM does not always need to make a tackle. Positioning the CDM in the middle to block the passing lane leading to the striker is often enough. If the opponent forces a pass into that lane, the CDM can intercept. This becomes especially important when the opponent is already near your penalty area: a well-placed CDM limits the route to the striker, reduces dangerous passes, and keeps your center-backs from being dragged out of position.

When defending transitions, use a midfielder to track back rather than immediately pulling a center-back forward. Chasing the ball carrier from behind with a midfielder keeps pressure on the ball while also blocking passing lanes, giving your defensive line more time to organize.

tip
Lower Depth settings in FC 27 now cause defenders to retreat sooner and hold a more conservative position. The defensive line still reacts dynamically, but your selected Depth setting is reflected more clearly than it was during the beta.

7 defending mistakes to stop making in FC 27

  1. Staying on your CDM while center-backs handle the striker. In Competitive Gameplay, those center-backs are no longer making the tackle for you.
  2. Switching after the striker already controls the pass. You are already reacting. Switch earlier and defend the route into the danger area.
  3. Sprinting directly at every dribbler. Close the gap, then slow down and jockey.
  4. Tackling because you are close enough to press the button. Proximity and a clean tackle opportunity are not the same thing.
  5. Expecting Teammate Contain to win possession. The containing player stands farther off in FC 27. It is support, not autopilot.
  6. Activating Team Press as an emergency box-defense button. It has no effect in your defensive third.
  7. Spamming shoulder challenges while chasing. Repeated inputs slow the defender. Get side-by-side first.
