EA Sports FC 27 Career Mode has a new wrinkle this year: Dynamic OVR ratings mean a free agent you sign on day one can grow or regress depending on form and environment. That changes how you evaluate these zero-fee pickups. A player listed at 80 overall is not a fixed asset anymore. Get them happy, give them minutes, and they can outperform their sticker. The free agent market has always been one of Career Mode's best-kept advantages, and in FC 27 it matters more than ever.
Signing a free agent costs you nothing in transfer fees. You negotiate wages, squad role, and performance bonuses, and that is it. For clubs managing a tight budget, that means the money you save goes straight toward the positions where you actually need to spend. For big clubs, it means depth without the administrative headache of a full transfer.
There is one timing trap worth knowing. Players left without a club for too long can now retire permanently. That means you want to move on the best names early in your save, not after two seasons of ignoring the free agent pool.
These players are available from the start of your save using the initial squads. Ratings reflect FC 27's Dynamic OVR system, so the numbers below can shift with game time and player happiness.

Goalkeepers are a separate conversation. Paying transfer fees for a third-choice keeper is one of the worst uses of budget in Career Mode. Hugo Souza (GK, 27, 78 overall) gives you a young, capable option at zero cost. David Ospina (GK, 38, 74 overall) is the experienced backup for clubs that need a reliable hand off the bench without worrying about development.
Giorgian De Arrascaeta is the single best free agent available at launch. His 83 overall is the highest on the entire list, and his ability to operate across central and attacking midfield roles means he slots into almost any system. He is 32, so his Dynamic OVR could plateau rather than climb, but at that rating you are not signing him to develop.
Memphis Depay is the equivalent up front. A 80-rated striker-winger hybrid at zero cost fills the end-product gap that plagues most lower-budget clubs from day one. Simon Banza is another 80-rated striker option if Depay does not fit your system.
For medium-term planning, Toni Fruk and José Manuel López are the names to move on fast. Both are 25 years old with ratings of 79 and potentials of 84 and 82 respectively. Under the Dynamic OVR system, give them consistent minutes and a positive environment and they can push well beyond those numbers. Luiz Henrique (RM, 25, 78 overall, 81 potential) does the same job on the flanks.
David Alaba at CB deserves a mention specifically for clubs managing a leaky defence. His 80 overall with an 87 potential is unusual for a 34-year-old, and in a system where ratings shift dynamically, a motivated Alaba in a settled backline can genuinely reach that ceiling.
Beyond the established names, there is a group of younger players available for free who suit long-term project saves.
| Name | Position | Age | Overall | Potential |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Gomez | RM | 23 | 73 | 82 |
| M. Lazo | CB | 22 | 68 | 79 |
| M. Gutierrez | RM | 22 | 68 | 77 |
| D. Bobadilla | CM | 24 | 73 | 78 |
| E. Noriega | CDM | 24 | 70 | 77 |
| S. Alioum | RM | 22 | 66 | 76 |
| E. Moungam | CB | 20 | 64 | 73 |
| A. Al Oui | RB | 21 | 60 | 71 |
| Nguyen Dinh Bac | ST | 21 | 61 | 74 |
| M. Fernandez Monyebe | CM | 19 | 60 | 70 |
Andrés Gómez (RM, 23) is the standout here. A 73 overall with 82 potential is a free signing that most clubs would pay decent money for, and he fills the right wing spot that often goes neglected in rebuild saves. Matías Lazo (CB, 22, 68 overall, 79 potential) is the long-term defensive project if you want to build your backline from scratch without spending.
Remember that potential is not guaranteed. These players need game time and a stable environment to hit their ceilings. Bench them for three seasons and their Dynamic OVR will reflect that.

FC 27 Guide: Best Free Agents to Sign in Career Mode
The launch-window list only covers your first save. After that, the free agent pool changes every season as contracts expire. Here is how to stay on top of it.
Head to the Scouting tab and open Search Players. Set the Transfer Status filter to Free Agents to see everyone currently without a club. Switch it to Expiring Contracts to identify players you can approach for pre-contract agreements before the summer window opens.
Once the January transfer window opens, any player with 6 or fewer months remaining on their contract can be approached for a free transfer at the season's end. Their current club can still offer a renewal, and rival clubs will be competing for the same signatures. Move early on the players you want.
When sending scouts to specific countries or leagues, you can instruct them to flag players with less than a year left on their deal. This keeps your pipeline full without manually checking every squad in the game.
Signing the right free agents only pays off if your formation supports them. De Arrascaeta and Fruk both want to operate in central attacking positions, so formations with a CAM slot give them the most impact. Depay works best in systems that let a striker drift wide. Check out the EA FC 27 best formations and custom tactics guide to match your free signings to a setup that gets the most from them.
If you are running a lower-league rebuild and budget is genuinely tight, the guide to getting free packs fast in FUT is not directly relevant to Career Mode, but understanding how EA structures its reward systems can inform how you approach the broader game. The more pressing read for Career Mode managers is the FC 27 Career Mode deep dive pitch notes, which covers the Dynamic OVR system, TransferRoom integration, and Creator Challenges in full detail.
