EA Sports FC 27 arrives as the fourth entry under the FC branding, and for the first time in a while, it feels like EA Vancouver and EA Romania actually had something to prove. The result is a game with more genuine new ideas than any entry since the FIFA rebrand, even if a few of them land with a thud.

Gameplay

Here's the thing: the on-pitch product is still too arcade-y for its own good. Finishing a match 7-6 or 9-8 is not a rare occurrence in FC 27, and if you're averaging five goals a game on default settings, something is off. Football is a low-scoring sport built on defensive tension. When that tension evaporates, so does the feeling that you're actually playing football.

That said, EA kept its promise on defending. The AI assistance has been pulled back significantly, and defending is far more manual this year. That is a real, meaningful change. It means the skill gap between players will widen as the season progresses, which is exactly what competitive modes need. The new Tactics system is the other big on-pitch story. It maps to real football concepts in a way that feels intuitive rather than buried in menus, and it gives you genuine control over how your team shapes up without needing a coaching badge to understand it.

The gameplay improvements are real but incremental. If you bounced off FC 26 because it felt like an arcade game wearing a football kit, FC 27 does not fully fix that. It nudges it in the right direction.

warning
Default difficulty settings still produce unrealistic scorelines. Bumping up to World Class or Legendary and tweaking defensive line settings manually will give you a much more grounded experience.

The Grounds

The Grounds is the headline new mode, and it is... fine. The idea of a social hub built around street-style football culture is genuinely exciting, and EA clearly wants this to be their answer to the NBA 2K neighborhood concept. The execution, though, feels underbaked. The football itself barely differs from the main game. You are essentially playing a tighter version of regular FC 27 from a slightly different camera angle.

Volta, for all its flaws, actually felt like street football. The pace, the tricks, the atmosphere, it had a personality. The Grounds does not have that yet. It has the structure of a social hub without the soul of one. Whether EA expands it meaningfully through the year will determine whether it becomes a genuine pillar of the game or a forgotten menu option by January.

Career mode

Manager Career is the most improved mode in FC 27, and it is not particularly close. The new Dynamic Overall system is the standout addition: player ratings now fluctuate based on form, training load, and how you manage their minutes. A star striker who has been overplayed for three months will not perform like one. That single mechanic adds a layer of genuine management depth that previous entries completely lacked.

FC 27 Career Mode: All the new features explained

New cutscenes, pop-up events, and interactive moments make the day-to-day feel less like navigating spreadsheets and more like actually running a club. The transfer market has also been overhauled with real negotiation depth. If you enjoy trophy hunting across Career Mode milestones, this year's version gives you far more to chase.

Player Career, on the other hand, is essentially unchanged. Nothing new, nothing added, nothing fixed. Football has two sides: managers and players. Half the audience wants to live the footballer's journey, and EA has ignored that half again. It is a dull, bland experience that feels like it exists only to tick a box on the feature list.

important
If you primarily play Player Career, FC 27 offers you almost nothing new. Manager Career is where all the development attention went this year.

Ultimate Team

FUT has two genuinely good stories this year. The first is the Gallery, which reframes card collecting as a proper hobby rather than a pay-to-win arms race. It scratches the same itch as a Panini sticker album or a Topps card collection, and it adds real value to hoarding and building out your collection over time.

The second is how EA has handled the Ones to Watch promo. Every OTW card is earnable through objectives, Squad Building Challenges, or climbing the season ladder. Pack openers and credit card spenders cannot instantly leapfrog everyone else with a single big purchase. That is a refreshing change, and if EA maintains this philosophy across the full promo calendar, it will meaningfully change how FUT feels to play for free or on a budget.

For players looking to maximize their FUT rewards, the Division Rivals reward structure has also been updated this year with clearer progression from Division 10 through to Elite tier.

The transfer market being locked for new accounts is a friction point early on, and it is clearly designed to combat multi-accounting and system abuse. The intent is right even if the execution frustrates legitimate new players in the opening weeks.

Graphics and audio

Visually, FC 27 is a modest step forward on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Player likenesses for top-tier clubs are strong, and stadium atmospheres have been improved with better crowd audio and more dynamic lighting during evening matches. The presentation layer, broadcast graphics, commentary cadence, and menu design all feel polished without being dramatically different from last year.

The soundtrack does its job. It is a broad mix of global artists that fits the game's international ambitions, though nothing on it will stick in your head the way some earlier FIFA soundtracks did. I was pleasantly surprised when โ€œWay Too Self Awareโ€ came on as it is on my liked Spotify playlist so as long as their taste matches mine, we are good to go.

Verdict

FC 27 is the most ambitious entry the series has produced since dropping the FIFA name. The Tactics overhaul works, the Dynamic Overall system in Manager Career is genuinely good, and the FUT promo changes show EA is at least listening to its player base. The Grounds has potential it has not yet earned, the gameplay still produces scorelines that would embarrass a Sunday league referee, and Player Career remains an afterthought.

For a deeper look at everything the game has to offer across modes and progression systems, the EA Sports FC 27 guides collection covers the key areas worth knowing before you start.

If you play simulation games for the sense of authentic football management, Manager Career finally delivers something worth your time. If you play for the street culture fantasy, wait and see if The Grounds grows into itself. If you play FUT competitively, this might be the most level playing field the mode has offered in years. FC 27 is not a complete performance, but it is the clearest sign yet that the series knows what it needs to fix.

EA Sports FC 27 Review

8/10

EA Sports FC 27 is the strongest argument yet that the series is genuinely trying to evolve. The Tactics overhaul, the Dynamic Overall system in Career Mode, and the more honest approach to FUT promos all point in the right direction. The Grounds is interesting in concept but thin in execution, and the core gameplay still produces scorelines that no football fan would recognize from an actual match. Player Career remains an afterthought, which is baffling when half the audience wants to live the footballer's journey, not just manage one. But taken as a whole, this is the first FC entry that feels like it earned its annual price tag rather than just collecting it. If EA follows through on its promises across the full game cycle, FC 27 could be remembered as the year things actually started to change.
