Overview
Exodus is a sci-fi action-adventure RPG developed by Archetype Entertainment and published by Wizards of the Coast. Players take on the role of the Traveler, a specialist sent into distant solar systems to recover advanced alien technology for a humanity that has long since left Earth behind. The premise sounds familiar on the surface, but the mechanical conceit underneath it is anything but standard RPG fare.
The defining concept in Exodus is Time Dilation. While the Traveler counts missions in days, the civilization left behind experiences those same intervals as decades. Every departure is a leap forward in time for everyone else. The people the Traveler knows grow old, change, and die while the player character barely ages. That's not flavor text. It's the engine that drives every choice in the game.

What makes Time Dilation different from standard choice systems?
Most RPGs with branching narratives let you pick dialogue options and watch the consequences play out in the same session. Exodus operates on a different scale entirely. A decision made before a mission doesn't just affect a cutscene on the way back. It shapes years, sometimes generations, of life for the characters left behind on humanity's new home planet.

Key features built around this system include:
- Generational butterfly effects from single decisions
- Loved ones aging and changing across missions
- Alien technology recovery as the core mission loop
- A hostile galaxy as the persistent backdrop
- Character relationships evolving in real time across decades
This structure forces a kind of emotional weight that most action RPGs sidestep. The Traveler is permanently out of sync with the world they're trying to protect.

World and setting
Earth is gone. Humanity has carved out a fragile existence on a new planet inside a galaxy that hasn't rolled out a welcome mat. The Traveler operates at the frontier of this existence, pushing into solar systems that human civilization hasn't touched, looking for technology that could tip the balance of survival.
Archetype Entertainment has built a universe where the stakes feel genuinely existential rather than cosmetic. The alien technology the Traveler recovers isn't just loot. It carries implications for how humanity's new civilization develops, which feeds back into the generational consequences of Time Dilation in ways that connect the moment-to-moment action to the larger narrative arc.
Gameplay and mechanics
Exodus is an action-adventure RPG, so combat and exploration anchor the experience. The Traveler moves through far-off solar systems, engaging with whatever threats and discoveries those environments hold. Archetype Entertainment hasn't released a full mechanical breakdown of combat systems, but the confirmed structure places action gameplay in service of a story-driven RPG framework where player agency carries real long-term cost.

The game is coming to PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation, giving it broad platform reach for a new IP. At over 500,000 wishlists on Steam alone ahead of launch, the appetite for a sci-fi RPG built around this kind of temporal consequence system is clearly there. Exodus is positioning itself as a franchise, and the Time Dilation mechanic gives it a foundation distinctive enough to build on.
