Far Far West Guide:: All Train Wreck Locations

Far Far West locks its Far Far North map behind a specific questline that normal progression won't hand you. To open it up, you need to track down three Mysterious Train Wrecks spread across the Far West, Canyon, and Area 41 maps, complete a black box download objective at each one, and extract safely after every run. None of the wrecks appear as obvious map markers, so knowing where to look saves a lot of time.

What is the Mysterious Train Wreck questline?

Each wreck is tied to a Wreckage Recovery quest that plays out the same way across all three maps. A Railroad Worker NPC stands beside every crash site and hands you the black box task when you speak to them. The core mechanic is a moving green ring that appears near the wreck. You stand inside it while the data downloads to 100%, move with it when it shifts position, and deal with enemy waves that spawn partway through. Once the download finishes, defeat the map boss and extract safely. That extraction is what actually registers the quest completion.

All three quests use this same structure. The only variable is the map and the location of the wreck on it.

Do you need to unlock Area 41 first?

Yes. Area 41 is not available from the start. Before you can attempt the third Train Wreck quest there, you need to complete The Great Marauder Secret questline on the Desert map for Dr. Spark-Twist. That questline has two objectives:

  • Fighting Spy: Clear two Marauder camps, collect the Marauder intel from the glowing box at each cleared camp, then defeat the boss and extract safely.
  • Mass Surveillance: Go to the marked Marauder camp, clear the enemies, enter Dr. Spark-Twist's code (provided by the NPC, changes each run) into the antenna machine, defend the area while it activates, then extract safely.

Complete both objectives with successful extractions and Area 41 appears on the map selection screen. Plan to do this before you start the Train Wreck questline so you can run all three maps back to back.

All Train Wreck locations

There are exactly three wrecks to find. The table below summarizes where each one sits on its respective map, confirmed across both source guides.

Run them in this order. Far West first, Canyon second, Area 41 last. Area 41 requires the Dr. Spark-Twist unlock anyway, so the sequence is effectively forced.

Far West Mysterious Train Wreck location

Head to the northeast corner of the Far West map, above the Willy Billy landmark. A smoke pillar rising from the crash site is the clearest visual cue. The Railroad Worker stands right next to the wreck. Speak to them to trigger Wreckage Recovery I, then begin the green ring download.

Canyon Mysterious Train Wreck location

The second wreck sits in the southeast corner of the Canyon map, tucked between the cliffs. Ride south and east from spawn until you reach the cliff walls, then look for smoke. The Railroad Worker is at the crash site. Talk to them to start Wreckage Recovery II and repeat the same download objective.

Area 41 Mysterious Train Wreck location

The final wreck is on the east side of Area 41, identifiable by the giant bones and spiky rocks surrounding it alongside the smoke. This is the last piece of the questline. Complete Wreckage Recovery III, beat the map boss, and extract safely. After that, Far Far North unlocks.

How to complete the black box download objective

The mechanic trips up players who treat this like a standard combat encounter. Your priority is the ring, not the enemies.

  1. Speak to the Railroad Worker to activate the objective.
  2. Stand inside the moving green ring to start the download progress.
  3. When the ring shifts position, move with it immediately. Progress pauses if you step outside.
  4. Enemy waves spawn around the halfway point. Kill enemies that enter the ring or directly threaten your position, then return inside.
  5. Avoid chasing enemies far from the ring. Let them come to you.
  6. Reach 100% download progress, then defeat the map boss.
  7. Extract safely to register the quest completion.

The extraction step is what most players miss on their first attempt. Dying after a completed download still voids the run.

Best tips for finishing the questline efficiently

  • Follow the smoke: Every wreck has a visible smoke pillar. Scan the horizon when you first spawn rather than navigating blind.
  • Complete maps in order: Far West, then Canyon, then Area 41. The questline tracks sequentially.
  • Stay in the ring: Kills mean nothing if the download stalls because you wandered out chasing a stray enemy.
  • Unlock Area 41 before starting: Running two wrecks and then hitting a locked map wastes time. Finish the Dr. Spark-Twist questline on Desert first.
  • Extract every time: A successful download that ends in a death or failed extraction does not count. Treat extraction as part of the objective.
