Grounded 2Update 0.5: Into the Abyss is the game's biggest update since Early Access began, opening a much larger part of Brookhollow Park to explore.

The update focuses heavily on underwater progression. Skunk Pond now leads into deeper areas, players can build below the surface, new gear supports longer dives, and the Toe Biter joins the Buggy system. Obsidian also added new creatures, collectibles, equipment, and changes to systems such as O.R.C. raids.

Here is what players need to know about the Grounded 2 Into the Abyss update.

Into the Abyss Update at a Glance

The biggest change is that water is no longer just another environmental obstacle. Into the Abyss gives underwater exploration its own progression, equipment, enemies, resources, and building options.

Explore Skunk Pond and the Abyss

Skunk Pond is at the center of Update 0.5.

What initially looks like another pond opens into a much larger underwater region with vertical routes, hidden areas, and new points of interest. New surrounding areas also include the Bayou and Mountains, while players who progress far enough can descend into the Abyss itself.

The current Grounded 2 Wiki also lists Skunk Pond as a distinct biome within the Resting Area Region, confirming the official in-game spelling.

Progression through these areas is tied to diving equipment. Instead of swimming straight to the deepest point, players will need to improve their gear before pushing farther underwater.

Get the Diving Armor

Underwater progression revolves around what Obsidian refers to as the Diving Suit system.

The Grounded 2 Wiki categorizes the full equipment set as Diving Armor, made up of three pieces:

  • Diving Helmet
  • Diving Suit Chestplate
  • Diving Boots

The full set is required to safely enter the Abyss. Its Under Pressure set bonus provides unlimited Oxygen, immunity to underwater Chill, and access to the Abyss region.

Optical Disks are also part of this progression. They can be brought to Ranger Outposts to unlock new recipes through the Science Shop, including equipment needed to push farther into the game's later areas.

That gives the pond a clear loop: explore, find upgrades and resources, improve the diving setup, then return to reach areas that were previously inaccessible.

tip
Prioritize completing the full Diving Armor set before attempting to reach the Abyss. The Under Pressure set bonus is required to survive the deepest areas.

Underwater Combat Has New Options

Into the Abyss adds more than the ability to swim around enemies.

Underwater movement now includes Burst, a directional dash that gives players another way to avoid attacks. Lock-on also works underwater, making it easier to follow enemies in three-dimensional spaces.

The Harpoon Gun is one of the main additions for ranged combat. The Wiki confirms it is specifically designed for underwater use and fires Harpoon Bolts.

Other tools include the Omni-Clipper, which is needed to harvest certain underwater resources. The Omni-Clipper can be purchased at a Ranger Station using Raw Science and materials including a Toe Biter Claw and Sunken Bone.

These systems make pond combat feel more like a separate playstyle rather than regular Grounded 2 combat simply moved underwater.

Build Bases Underwater

Into the Abyss also opens a new option for base builders: fully submerged bases.

Obsidian specifically highlights Bubble Floors, which can create breathable areas beneath the surface. That means underwater structures can work as actual bases and staging areas rather than simply decorative builds.

The update also includes Marine building pieces. Current Wiki data confirms pieces such as the Marine Wall, Marine Door, Marine Half Wall, Marine Triangle Wall, and Windowed Marine Wall.

Other underwater building and utility options include the Marine Workbench, Bubble Diffuser, and returning Buoyant Foundations. Eelgrass Strand is used across several of these new aquatic recipes.

The supplied walkthrough also highlights Mushroom Floors, Trap Doors, Horsetail scaffolding, and other additions available to builders.

More Crafting and Building Pieces

Update 0.5 adds several crafting and production options alongside the underwater pieces.

One confirmed addition is the Quern, a hand mill used to process certain refined resources.

The new Horsetail Scaffold and its variants are also correctly named on the Wiki. They are crafted using Horsetail Stem and Eelgrass Strand and provide another scaffolding style for larger builds.

Grounded 2's building library has expanded considerably overall, including Pine, Mushroom, Pumpkin, and Marine pieces alongside more roof, fence, stair, and decorative options.

important
Not everything in the current building library arrived specifically with Into the Abyss. Several pieces were introduced in earlier Grounded 2 updates and should be treated as part of the game's wider Early Access expansion.

Get the Toe Biter Buggy

The Toe Biter is one of Into the Abyss' main new creatures, and it also joins the Buggy system.

Obsidian describes it as an amphibious Buggy capable of helping players move between land and water.

More specifically, the Grounded 2 Wiki calls the hatchable mount the Toe Biter Nymph Buggy. It is produced at a Hatchery using a Toe Biter Egg alongside Horsetail Stem, Koi Fish Scale, Sunken Bone, and Pond Moss.

It also has dedicated passive mutations, including Wave Maker, Elemental Adept, and Aqua Jogger, which improve areas such as its area attack, elemental buildup, and stamina while moving through water.

The Toe Biter expands a Buggy lineup that already plays a major role in Grounded 2 exploration. The supplied walkthrough also shows Ant, Spider, Ladybug, and Toe Biter options as part of the game's wider Buggy progression.

New and Returning Creatures

Skunk Pond brings plenty of new problems with it.

Toe Biter Nymphs and adult Toe Biters can appear both around Skunk Pond and other areas of the updated region. The Wiki also confirms Pond Jockey Swarm as the proper creature name, with an Ancient Pond Jockey Swarm appearing in deeper areas.

Returning aquatic creatures from the original Grounded also appear in the expanded pond content, including enemies such as Diving Bell Spiders and Water Fleas. Obsidian additionally calls out new CNK robots among the dangers introduced around the update's new areas.

The wider Grounded 2 roster has also grown considerably throughout Early Access, with creatures such as scorpions, Blue Butterflies, cockroaches, Praying Mantises, Green Shield Bugs, and Rust Beetles among those present in the game. Not all of these creatures debuted in Into the Abyss itself.

New Weapons and Gear

New creatures and resources mean more equipment to craft.

The Harpoon Gun is the clearest addition for underwater combat, while other aquatic gear includes the Crystal Trident and Koi Scale Shield. Both are confirmed in the current Grounded 2 crafting data.

Toe Biter materials also unlock new equipment such as the Toe Biter Scythe, a two-handed Slashing weapon with the Chilling Venom perk.

There is also a full Toe Biter Armor set consisting of the Toe Biter Tricorn, Toe Biter Coat, and Toe Biter Boots.

The update adds plenty of new resources to support these recipes, while returning pond materials such as Eelgrass Strand, Koi Fish Scale, Pond Moss, and Sunken Bone become important again.

O.R.C. Raids Now Use Heat

O.R.C. attacks no longer rely entirely on the older raid setup.

Grounded 2 now tracks an invisible Heat value based on actions that attract the enemy's attention. Killing certain O.R.C. creatures, hacking O.R.C. Transmitters, and crafting specific items can increase Heat.

Players receive warnings as Heat builds. Once the threshold is reached, an O.R.C. Wave can begin at the next valid time.

The Tin Foil Hat even has an Incognito effect that prevents Heat from being generated while it is equipped.

This makes raids more predictable because they are tied to what the player is doing rather than feeling completely random.

Fast Travel Has Expanded

Moving around Brookhollow Park becomes increasingly important as the playable area grows.

The Pneumatic Transit System remains Grounded 2's main built-in transportation network, connecting Ominent locations and allowing players to cover large distances quickly.

Into the Abyss expands the Ranger Outpost transit network, making these stations more useful for getting between major parts of the park. The system becomes especially valuable compared with repeatedly crossing the entire map on foot or by Buggy.

Find Critter Capz

Into the Abyss gives completionists another collectible to hunt down.

The correct current spelling is Critter Capz. Obsidian describes them as bug-themed collectibles hidden around Brookhollow Park, often away from the obvious paths.

They also have a gameplay purpose. The Buzzin' Buggies mutation improves Buggy sprint stamina use and regeneration. Its three phases unlock after discovering 5, 15, and 30 Critter Capz.

That gives players another reason to revisit older areas instead of spending the entire update around Skunk Pond.

What Returning Players Should Know

Not every major difference visible in the current game comes specifically from Into the Abyss.

Players returning from the original Grounded will also find that armor, Buggies, mutations, and character progression have changed considerably throughout Grounded 2's Early Access period.

Armor now has more specialized effects and set bonuses, and players should not assume armor behaves exactly as it did in Grounded 1.

Mutations are also divided between active and passive mutations, reducing the amount of constant swapping required when changing weapons or Buggies.

Grounded 2 additionally includes Moldy Milk Molars for Buggy progression alongside the normal Milk Molar systems.

These are important differences for returning players, but they should not all be credited to Update 0.5.

Is Into the Abyss Worth Returning For?

Into the Abyss is much more than an extra pond biome.

Skunk Pond now feeds into its own progression loop, with Diving Armor, underwater combat, submerged bases, Toe Biters, the Toe Biter Nymph Buggy, new equipment, Critter Capz, and the Abyss all giving players new reasons to explore Brookhollow Park. Obsidian itself describes Update 0.5 as Grounded 2's biggest update yet.

Returning players also have changes from earlier Early Access updates waiting for them, particularly around Buggies, mutations, armor, building, and combat.

For anyone starting the update fresh, Skunk Pond should be treated as its own progression path rather than a quick side trip. Better diving gear gradually opens more of the area, and reaching the Abyss requires much more preparation than simply jumping into the water.
