Why Cooking Is the Best First Hobby in Heartopia

When you hit DG Level 5 in Heartopia, you face one of your most important early decisions: which hobby to unlock first. You get a Hobby Expansion Ticket and three options, Insect Catching, Bird Watching, and Cooking. Cooking wins every time. It ties directly into Gardening and Fishing, meaning you naturally level three systems at once while turning raw ingredients into meals that sell for significantly more coins than uncooked goods. If you miss it at Level 5, you can still unlock Cooking at DG Level 8 or DG Level 11.

How Do You Unlock and Start Cooking in Heartopia?

Once you have your Hobby Expansion Ticket, head to the town center and find Massimo, the NPC standing outside his café. Hand him the ticket to officially unlock Cooking. Massimo doubles as your recipe vendor throughout the game, so you will return to him often as your Hobby Level climbs.

After unlocking, walk up to any stove, interact with it, and choose a recipe from your learned list. One important rule: you cannot randomly combine ingredients to discover new dishes. You can only cook recipes you have already learned, either through leveling up or purchasing from Massimo.

Understanding the Cooking QTE System

Once a recipe is started, a timer appears above the stove. Periodically, a spatula icon with a green countdown circle pops up. Tap it before the circle empties to adjust the cooking temperature. Miss it, and your dish burns, producing Bizarre Food or a Bizarre Drink instead of the intended meal.

Different recipes require different numbers of spatula interactions, so stay close to the stove until your dish finishes. With practice, the Quick Time Events (QTEs) become second nature and you will consistently produce high-star meals.

What Are All the Heartopia Recipes?

Recipes in Heartopia are split into base recipes and sub-recipes. You start with 2 base recipes and can unlock up to 30 total. Many base recipes generate sub-recipe variants depending on which specific ingredient you use. For example, cooking 4 fruits makes a Jam, but using 4 Blueberries specifically unlocks Blueberry Jam as a permanent entry in your recipe book. Each variant earns extra XP and expands your cooking options.

What Are the Best Strategies for Leveling Cooking Fast?

Prioritize Sub-Recipe Variants Early

Every sub-recipe variant you unlock counts as a separate dish and awards extra XP. When ingredients are limited, swapping mushroom types in a Grilled Mushroom or Mushroom Pie recipe is a fast way to rack up entries without buying new base recipes from Massimo.

Stack Gardening and Cooking Together

Wheat (HGL 2, 4-hour grow time) appears in a huge number of recipes including Cheesecake, Smoked Fish Bagel, Seafood Risotto, Black Truffle Cream, and multiple pies. Planting Wheat early and keeping a steady supply running is one of the highest-return moves in the game. Tomatoes (15-minute grow time at HGL 1) are equally valuable for Tomato Sauce and Meat Sauce Pasta.

Always Sell Cooked Dishes, Not Raw Ingredients

Raw ingredients sell at base prices. Cooked meals sell for noticeably more. A Grilled Mushroom made from four Button Mushrooms (each worth 16 Coins raw) sells for 180 Coins at 1 Star. The markup scales further with higher star ratings from successful QTE interactions.

Winter Frost Season: Exclusive Recipes

Heartopia'sWinter Frost seasonal event introduces a set of winter-exclusive recipes tied to the Fashionwave quests with Massimo. These recipes support ingredient customization for extra XP and higher coin returns. The key restriction: winter recipes can only be cooked on Penguin Stoves, a special stove type introduced during the event. Tracking one down is essential if you want to complete your winter cooking collection.

This seasonal content is a work in progress as the game updates, so check back as new Winter Frost recipes are confirmed.
