Overview
Heroes of Might & Magic V arrived in 2006 and made a bold bet: rebuild a beloved PC strategy franchise from scratch in full 3D without losing what made the originals work. Developed by Nival, the game keeps the hex-grid combat, resource-gathering overworld, and town-building loops that defined earlier entries while wrapping everything in a cinematic fantasy presentation. Six factions, each with distinct playstyles and armies, anchor a campaign that runs across multiple protagonists and story arcs.

The core loop remains familiar to anyone who has played the series before. You move heroes across an adventure map, capture resource nodes, recruit creatures from your towns, and clash with enemy armies on a separate tactical battlefield. What HoMM V refines is the hero skill system, which uses a branching perk tree that lets you specialize toward combat, magic, or hybrid builds. Every hero levels up differently depending on which skills you prioritize, giving each playthrough a distinct character even when the map stays the same.

Gameplay and mechanics
Tactical combat sits at the heart of every session. Armies line up on a hex grid and take turns based on initiative scores, with larger stacks of creatures hitting harder but occupying single hex spaces regardless of unit count. The system rewards positioning, ability timing, and understanding each faction's strengths.
Key mechanics across the six factions:
- Haven trains units between tiers for upgraded versions
- Inferno uses Gating to summon temporary battlefield reinforcements
- Necropolis reanimates fallen enemies mid-combat through necromancy
- Dungeon casts Irresistible Magic that bypasses most spell resistance
- Sylvan armies gain stacking bonuses against previously defeated enemy types
- Academy fields mostly shooters and flyers backed by wizard-focused heroes

The branching skill wheel gives heroes real identity. A Dungeon warlock built around Irresistible Magic plays completely differently from a Haven knight stacking defense and unit promotion. Choices compound over a campaign, which makes early decisions feel meaningful rather than cosmetic.
World and story
The narrative spans six full campaigns, each following a different faction's hero through a connected story about a demon invasion and the Demon Sovereign Kha-Beleth's plan to summon a Demon Messiah. The Haven campaign opens with Queen Isabel and the loyal general Godric defending the Griffin Empire after a surprise demon attack disrupts the royal wedding. From there the story branches into the Inferno arc following the demon Agrael, whose motivations turn out to be far more complicated than simple villainy.
The Dungeon campaign reveals that Agrael has undergone a ritual to purge his demonic nature and reemerged as the dark elf warlock Raelag, with his name being a literal anagram of his old identity. The Necropolis campaign puts the scheming necromancer Markal front and center, manipulating Isabel into dismantling her own alliances. By the Academy arc, young Archmage Zehir is piecing together an alliance of all surviving factions to confront Kha-Beleth directly. The story does not tie up cleanly, ending on a deliberate cliffhanger that carries into the expansion content.

Content and replayability
Beyond the six-campaign story mode, Heroes of Might & Magic V includes skirmish maps and multiplayer support on Windows and macOS, with the game available on Steam. The faction diversity alone drives replayability. Running a Sylvan archer build feels nothing like managing a Necropolis army that grows larger the longer a battle drags on, since every fallen enemy unit can be raised to fight for you.
The game's two expansion packs, Hammers of Fate and Tribes of the East, add new factions and campaigns that extend the story considerably. Even without them, the base game's campaign offers enough branching hero builds and faction strategies to sustain multiple playthroughs for players who want to master each side of the conflict.
