League of Legends Jungle Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Master the Jungle role in League of Legends with tips on clearing camps, ganking lanes, tracking enemies, and securing objectives.
A League of Legends game is won by destroying the enemy Nexus, but to get there you need to take control of the map by securing kills and objectives. While killing an enemy champion helps you grow stronger, the most consistent way to push the game forward and increase your team's overall power is by securing objectives.

League of Legends Beginner's Guide: Summoner's Rift Objectives
On Summoner's Rift, the major objectives are split into structures and jungle monsters. Structures stand between your team and the enemy Nexus, while major jungle monsters provide buffs, resources, and other advantages that help you take them down.
Turrets are defensive structures that protect each team's lanes and base. Each lane has three turrets: an outer turret (Tier 1), an inner turret (Tier 2), and an inhibitor turret (Tier 3), with two additional Nexus turrets protecting the Nexus. Total health decreases as you move further up the lane, with Nexus turrets having the least HP.
Turrets follow a strict targeting priority: pets first, then Cannon and Super Minions, melee minions, casters, and finally champions. However, if you attack an enemy champion while within an enemy turret's range, you immediately become its target.
Destroying a Tier 1 turret gives 50 gold, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 turrets give 25 gold. Half of this gold is distributed to every player on the team regardless of location, while the other half is split between nearby champions. If you damage a turret within 10 seconds of its destruction, you receive the gold regardless of where you are.
Lane turrets also have five turret plates, each representing a segment of their health. Destroying each plate gives 120 gold to nearby champions.
Beyond the gold, destroying turrets increases your map presence and allows your team to establish deeper vision in the enemy jungle. Whenever you have pushed an enemy out of lane, use that opportunity to attack the turret rather than wasting time.
Each team has three Inhibitors, one located at the end of each lane behind the Tier 3 turret.
Destroying an Inhibitor removes the final defence in that lane and causes Super Minions to spawn for your team in that lane. These stronger minions apply extra pressure on the enemy base and force the opposing team to deal with them.
Inhibitors respawn five minutes after being destroyed, so taking one down grants a temporary advantage rather than permanently removing it. However, if all three Inhibitors are destroyed, each lane spawns two Super Minions instead of one. This creates a near-impossible scenario where a team must defend against six Super Minions every 30 seconds, often leading to the end of the game.
The Nexus is the final structure and the ultimate objective of a Summoner's Rift game. It sits inside the enemy base behind two Nexus turrets that must be destroyed before you can attack it. Once the Nexus is destroyed, your team wins the game.
Unlike structures, jungle monsters are neutral objectives found around the map. Securing them is primarily the Jungler's responsibility. Killing them not only rewards your team with permanent buffs and temporary combat advantages but also changes the map, especially the jungle.

Dragon is a major jungle monster found in the Dragon Pit on the bottom side of the map. The first Dragon spawns at 5:00, with another spawning five minutes after the previous one is slain. There are six different Dragon elements, each with a unique effect for slaying them and a unique Dragon Soul effect.
| Dragon Element | Effect per Dragon Slain | Dragon Soul Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Infernal | 3% increased Attack Damage and Ability Power | Attacking triggers an AoE explosion that deals 100 (+22.5% bonus AD) (+13.5% AP) (+2.75% bonus health) adaptive damage to the target and nearby enemies. |
| Mountain | 5% bonus Armour and Magic Resistance | After not taking damage for 5 seconds, gain a shield for 220 (+16% bonus AD) (+12% AP) (+12% bonus health). |
| Ocean | Restores 2% missing health every 5 seconds | Dealing damage heals for 150 (+26% bonus AD) (+17% AP) (+7% bonus health) and restores 100 (+3.5% maximum mana) mana. |
| Cloud | 5% slow resistance and 5% out-of-combat movement speed | Gain 15% bonus movement speed, increased to 60% for 6 seconds after casting your ultimate. |
| Hextech | 5 Ability Haste and 5% bonus Attack Speed | Dealing damage to a target deals an extra 25–52.94 bonus true damage based on level and slows them by 45% / 35% (+3% per 100 bonus AD) (+1% per 100 AP) (+0.5% per 100 bonus health) for 2 seconds. |
| Chemtech | 5% Tenacity and 5% Heal and Shield Power | While below 50% maximum health, gain 13% increased damage and damage reduction. |
After the second Dragon is slain, the game selects the third Dragon's element, which determines how the map changes. From that point, all remaining Dragons will share that element.
The third Dragon's element also determines which Elemental Rift appears, changing parts of the map and altering how you move around the jungle.
| Elemental Rift | Map Changes |
|---|---|
| Infernal | Destroys walls and creates new paths. Adds extra Blast Cones and spawns Infernal Cinders, which grant temporary movement speed and Ability Haste. |
| Mountain | Forms new walls around the Blue, Red, Raptors, and Dragon Pit. |
| Ocean | Adds extra brushes, creating new areas to hide, and Honeyfruit near the lanes. |
| Cloud | Creates Cloud Zones around the Blue, Red, Raptors, and Dragon Pit, granting bonus movement speed. |
| Hextech | Places Hexgates around the map, allowing quick travel between different areas of the jungle and around the Dragon and Baron pits. |
| Chemtech | Enhances jungle plants with Blast Cones that launch you further, Honeyfruit that provides a shield without slowing you, and Scryer's Blooms that give additional vision effects. |
Once your team has slain four Dragons in total, you claim the Dragon Soul , a permanent team-wide buff based on the element of the third Dragon. After a team claims the Soul, regular elemental Dragons stop spawning and are replaced by the Elder Dragon.
The Elder Dragon respawns six minutes after being slain. Unlike the Dragon Soul, its buff , called Aspect of the Dragon , is temporary, lasting until a champion dies or after 150 seconds. Aspect of the Dragon causes your attacks and abilities to apply a burning true damage effect and grants an execute effect against enemies below 20% health, making it a game-ending buff.
Void Grubs are three large monsters that spawn in the Baron Pit 8 minutes into the game and despawn at 14:45, or 14:55 if in combat.
Killing an individual Voidgrub gives gold and experience, as well as a stack of the Touch of the Void buff to all team members, causing enemy structures to burn for true damage over time. Upon killing all three, team members also gain the Hunger of the Void buff, which summons allied Voidmites to assist in taking down enemy turrets.
Rift Herald appears in the Baron Pit after the Void Grubs, 15 minutes into the game.
Defeating it drops the Eye of the Herald, which can be picked up and used to summon the Herald in a lane. A player can then ride it for a short duration and control the direction of its charge, usually aiming it towards the nearest enemy tower.
Baron Nashor is the major late-game monster found in the Baron Pit on the top side of Summoner's Rift and spawns 20 minutes into the game.
Baron can spawn in one of three different variations: Territorial, Hunting, or All-Seeing. Each variation changes the terrain around the Baron Pit and gives Baron a different ability that it uses every six basic attacks.
Securing this objective grants your team the Hand of Baron buff for 180 seconds or until death, which provides bonus Attack Damage and Ability Power, as well as an empowered Recall that lets champions return to base faster. It also empowers nearby minions around any champion carrying the buff, making them significantly stronger when pushing enemy structures.
Baron is therefore less about the objective itself and more about what your team can accomplish with the buff afterwards.
If the enemy team already has control of an objective and your team cannot realistically contest it, take something elsewhere instead. Push a lane, take a turret, or invade the opposite side of the jungle.
After killing an enemy champion, use that extra time efficiently. Take a turret, Dragon, Rift Herald, or another objective instead of chasing more kills or wasting time.
Clear enemy wards and place your own vision around the area before starting an objective. This makes it harder for the enemy to approach unnoticed or steal it.
Before doing an objective, make sure your lanes are pushed. This gives your team more freedom to move first and forces the enemy to choose between defending their lane and contesting the objective.
If the enemy team is committing several players to one side of the map, look for an objective on the opposite side. If Dragon is heavily defended, you may be able to take Rift Herald or a turret while the enemy team is occupied.
Destroying an Inhibitor early can give the enemy team extra gold and experience from the Super Minions it spawns. Only take it when you can use the pressure to push other lanes or secure more objectives.
