Introduction

Few licensed games nail the balance between fan service and genuine fun, but LEGO Marvel Super Heroes pulls it off. Traveller's Tales packs more than 100 Marvel characters into a brick-built New York, wraps them in a surprisingly sharp original story, and delivers the kind of couch co-op action-adventure that holds up well over a decade after its 2013 release.

Overview

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is an action-adventure game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in November 2013. The game sends players across a LEGO-fied Manhattan and beyond, chasing Cosmic Bricks that Doctor Doom and Loki are harvesting from the Silver Surfer's shattered board to build a planet-destroying weapon. Nick Fury assembles the response team, and the roster that answers the call is genuinely impressive.

The story hits locations like Stark Tower, the X-Mansion, Asteroid M, Asgard, and a Hydra base, threading together corners of the Marvel Universe that rarely share the same screen. The writing leans into classic LEGO game humor, keeping the tone light without gutting the stakes entirely. For a game built around plastic bricks, it covers a surprising amount of Marvel lore.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core loop follows the established LEGO game formula: smash everything in sight, collect studs, solve environmental puzzles, and switch between characters whose unique abilities unlock different paths through each level. What makes Marvel Super Heroes stand out within that formula is how well the characters actually feel different from each other.

Key character abilities include:

  • Iron Man flies freely and fires repulsor blasts and missiles
  • Spider-Man web-slings, wall-crawls, and uses spider-sense to spot hidden objects
  • Captain America throws and ricochets his shield to hit multiple targets
  • Hulk smashes through reinforced walls and hurls vehicles as weapons
  • Wolverine tears through metal objects with adamantium claws

The "BIG-fig" system gives larger characters like Hulk and Abomination a noticeably different feel, with exaggerated strength moves that smaller heroes cannot replicate. It adds some genuine variety to combat rather than just reskinning the same punch animation.

How big is the open world?

LEGO Manhattan functions as a proper open-world hub connecting the game's story missions. It is large enough to reward exploration, packed with side missions, hidden characters, and collectibles that extend playtime well beyond the main campaign. Landmarks like the Daily Bugle, Baxter Building, and S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier are all present and interactable.

The roster tops 100 characters, spanning the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man's extended cast, and a deep bench of villains. Unlocking them all through free-roam exploration and bonus missions gives the game substantial replay value for collectors and completionists.

Co-op and replayability

Local co-op supports two players simultaneously, which remains one of the most reliable ways to experience the game. Traveller's Tales has always built its LEGO titles around shared-screen play, and Marvel Super Heroes is no different. The drop-in structure makes it accessible for players of different skill levels without forcing either person to wait.

Replay is baked into the design through "True Believer" stud targets, character-specific puzzle locks, and the sheer volume of unlockables scattered across both the hub world and story levels. A single playthrough clears the story but leaves a significant chunk of content untouched, encouraging return visits with newly unlocked characters.
