introduction

Traveller's Tales took one of cinema's most beloved adventure heroes and rebuilt him in plastic, and the result holds up remarkably well. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures packs Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade into a single co-op action-platformer that plays exactly as fun as it sounds. If you ever wanted to watch a LEGO Indy sidestep a giant boulder while your friend fumbles with a whip puzzle, this is the game.

Overview

Released in July 2009 by Traveller's Tales and published by LucasArts, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures adapts all three original Indy films into the studio's signature brick-built action-platformer format. The game covers Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, translating their most memorable set pieces into LEGO form with the tongue-in-cheek humor the series is known for.

The formula Traveller's Tales built with LEGO Star Wars is fully intact here. You fight through levels, smash everything in sight for studs, solve environmental puzzles using character-specific abilities, and hunt down hidden collectibles that extend playtime well beyond the main story. The pacing is breezy and the difficulty is low enough that younger players can clear it, while the collectible density gives completionists plenty to chase.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core loop centers on a few reliable pillars:

  • Smash LEGO objects to collect studs
  • Use character abilities to unlock puzzle solutions
  • Find hidden artifacts and collectibles per level
  • Replay levels in Free Play mode with unlocked characters
  • Build LEGO structures to progress or reveal secrets

Indy's whip is the standout mechanic, used to swing across gaps, disarm enemies, and trigger environmental switches. Different characters carry different tools: scholars can read ancient inscriptions, mechanics can fix broken machinery, and enemies like Belloq or Mola Ram become playable in Free Play, opening paths that story mode locks off. The system encourages multiple runs through each level, which keeps the replayability loop turning.

Co-op and social play

The game supports two-player local co-op throughout the entire campaign, which is where it really shines. The split-screen implementation lets both players drift apart within a level without forcing either into a dead zone, and the comedic timing of the cutscenes lands better when someone else is watching alongside you. Parent-child sessions work particularly well given the accessible difficulty, but adult co-op runs have their own charm, especially when both players recognize the film scenes being lampooned.

World and setting

Spanning 1930s locations from the jungles of South America to the catacombs of Venice and the deserts of Egypt, the game captures the globe-trotting spirit of the source material. Each film's levels carry a distinct visual tone: the shadowy temple interiors of Temple of Doom feel genuinely different from the sun-baked Egyptian digs of Raiders. Traveller's Tales compresses the films faithfully enough that fans will catch every major reference, while new players get a solid crash course in what made these movies iconic.

Content and replayability

The game ships with 18 story levels spread across the three films, with each level hiding artifact pieces, hidden characters, and stud multipliers that reward thorough exploration. Free Play mode is the real meat of the collectible hunt, letting you revisit every level with any unlocked character to reach previously inaccessible areas. The character roster runs to over 80 figures, which gives the roster-building side of the game its own satisfying momentum.

For a LEGO action-platformer built on movie licenses, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures delivers a content-complete package. The humor is consistent, the co-op holds up, and the level design respects the source films without being slavishly literal. If you want a lighthearted platformer adventure with genuine replay value, this one earns its place in the catalogue.
