Overview
Mass Effect Legendary Edition collects all three entries in BioWare's acclaimed sci-fi RPG trilogy into a single remastered package, released on May 14, 2021. The collection includes the base games for Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, along with over 40 DLCs covering story expansions, promo weapons, armors, and packs. Every piece of content has been remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
At the center of all three games is Commander Shepard, a customizable protagonist whose gender, background, and appearance you set at the start. The decisions made throughout the trilogy carry forward between entries, shaping alliances, companion fates, and ultimately the outcome of the war against the Reapers. This isn't a trilogy where the sequels reset the board; choices made in the first game echo into the third in ways that feel earned.
Gameplay and mechanics
The three games in the collection each represent a distinct phase in BioWare's design thinking. The original Mass Effect leans into RPG systems with stat-driven combat and deep inventory management. Mass Effect 2 tightened the shooting, streamlined the gear, and shifted toward a more action-focused feel without abandoning the character-driven structure. Mass Effect 3 blends both approaches, delivering some of the best third-person shooter combat in the series alongside its most emotionally charged story beats.
Key features included across the trilogy:
- Over 40 DLCs bundled in at no extra cost
- Full character creator with persistent Shepard across all three games
- Choice-driven narrative with cross-game consequences
- Remastered visuals up to 4K Ultra HD
- Unified launcher for all three games
The Legendary Edition also includes targeted improvements to the first game specifically, where BioWare updated the Mako vehicle controls, adjusted the original's combat to feel less sluggish, and reworked the HDR and facial animations to bring it closer in quality to its sequels.
World and setting
The Mass Effect universe is built around a galaxy populated by dozens of alien species, each with their own history, politics, and grudges. Humanity is the newcomer, having only recently joined the galactic community, and Shepard spends three games navigating that tension while trying to convince everyone that the Reapers, a race of ancient synthetic-organic machines, are real and coming.
The world-building here goes deep. Scanning planets reveals codex entries. Conversations with companions flesh out cultures and personal backstories. Side missions on the Citadel space station add texture to the political machinery running the galaxy. The Legendary Edition preserves all of it, including story DLCs like Lair of the Shadow Broker, Omega, and Citadel, which rank among the best content BioWare has ever made.
Content and replayability
With three full games and their complete DLC libraries in one package, the Legendary Edition represents an enormous amount of content. A first playthrough covering all three games with major side quests and DLC can easily run past 100 hours. New Game Plus and multiple difficulty settings add replay value, and the branching narrative structure means different playthroughs produce meaningfully different outcomes.
The PlayStation Store lists the game at $59.99, and it's also included with EA Play, making it one of the more accessible entry points for players who haven't touched the trilogy before. With a 4.8-star rating from over 31,000 PlayStation Store ratings, the reception reflects how well the package holds up years after its 2021 release. For anyone who missed the original trilogy or wants to revisit it with improved visuals and all the content in one place, the Legendary Edition remains the definitive version of one of gaming's most acclaimed RPG series.
