Ascension is one of the most important progression systems in Neverness to Everness, but the game doesn't exactly hold your hand when explaining it. Your characters hit a level wall fast, and until you understand how Ascension works and what Hunter Rank you need to unlock it, progress can feel frustratingly stalled. Here's everything you need to know to get past that wall and start pushing your roster forward.

What is the Ascension system in Neverness to Everness?
Ascension is the mechanic that raises a character's maximum level cap. Each time you push a character through an Ascension tier, the next batch of levels opens up. Without it, your characters simply stop gaining power regardless of how much XP you throw at them.
The system works similarly to progression gates found in other gacha RPGs: your character's ceiling is tied directly to their current Ascension level, so keeping that number moving is the only way to keep your roster competitive.

You cannot access Ascension at all until your Hunter Rank reaches 10. Trying to push characters past their initial level cap before that point simply isn't possible, so getting your Hunter Rank up first is the priority.
How do you unlock Ascension?
Two things need to happen before you can ascend any character. First, your Hunter Rank must hit 10. Second, you need the specific materials required for the Ascension tier you're attempting. Both conditions have to be met simultaneously, so even if you have all the resources, a low Hunter Rank blocks you completely.
As you move into higher Ascension tiers, the materials required become progressively rarer. Early-game resources are relatively easy to come by, but the higher-tier ingredients demand more deliberate farming.
Spending Ascension materials on a character you don't plan to use long-term is a real trap early in the game. Those same resources could go toward a character you're actually invested in. Be selective until your inventory fills out.
How to raise your Hunter Rank fast
Hunter Rank increases by earning XP through completing missions and tasks. There's no shortage of activities that feed Hunter Rank progression, so hitting Rank 10 shouldn't take long if you stay active.
The most efficient path to Rank 10 breaks down like this:
- Main story missions give the largest XP chunks and should be your primary focus when you want to hit Rank 10 quickly.
- Side quests are worth checking as you go, since some offer meaningful reward payouts that speed up the climb.
- General play will carry you there naturally even without obsessing over efficiency, so don't stress if you're exploring or experimenting.
If you're purely trying to reach Rank 10 as fast as possible, stick to main story missions and only dip into side content when the reward preview looks substantial. You'll hit the unlock threshold faster than you expect.
Should you ascend every character?
Not immediately. Early in Neverness to Everness, Ascension materials are limited enough that spreading them thin across your entire roster will leave your main characters underpowered. The smarter move is to identify two or three characters you're actively building and funnel resources into them first.
Later in the game, as you progress further and these materials become more readily available, spreading Ascension across the broader roster becomes much less costly. The scarcity is a launch-window problem more than a permanent constraint.
