Ezio vs Edward: Two Legends, One Creed - VeVe Digital Comics & Collectibles - Social

Players are stumbling onto something in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced that Ubisoft never explicitly put in the game. A community-discovered trick turns the humble smoke bomb into a makeshift explosive, and the reaction online has been split almost perfectly between delight and embarrassed self-inflicted deaths.

The trick that nobody asked for but everyone needed

Here's the lowdown. Throw a smoke bomb, let it start billowing, then immediately fire a pistol shot directly at the canister on the ground. The result is a small but satisfying explosion that deals damage to every enemy caught in the cloud and sends them stumbling backward. No explosive grenades exist in the base game, so this is effectively a weapon that players built themselves out of two items that have been in Edward Kenway's arsenal since the original 2013 release of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Assassin's Creed fan account Zephryss posted a clip on July 21, 2026 demonstrating the technique across multiple scenarios and locations, confirming it's not a one-off fluke. The footage shows a group of enemies closing in, the smoke bomb landing, the pistol shot connecting, and the crowd taking a hit before the smoke even fully clears. Repeatable, practical, and genuinely effective at crowd control.

warning
The explosion has no allegiance. If Edward is standing too close to the smoke bomb when the bullet connects, he takes the same damage as the enemies around him. Keep your distance before pulling the trigger.

Why so many players have been accidentally wrecking themselves

The community response tells the real story. Multiple players have replied to the clip with variations of the same confession: they had been triggering this by accident for weeks without understanding why Edward kept dying in the middle of a smoke screen.

"THIS. THIS IS HOW I KEEP BLOWING MYSELF UP??" is how one player put it. Another described trying to complete a trophy that required kicking a berserk enemy off a ship while inside smoke, only to keep accidentally drawing the pistol and detonating the canister instead. The trick was happening to them involuntarily, and they had no idea what was causing it.

What most players miss is that the pistol and smoke bomb inputs sit close enough together that accidental triggers are genuinely common. The discovery reframes a frustrating mystery as an actual technique, which is satisfying in a way that intentional tutorials rarely are.

Before and after knowing this exists

Prior to this discovery circulating, the smoke bomb in Black Flag Resynced functioned the same way it always has: a defensive tool to break enemy lock-ons, create distance, or set up a stealth kill. Useful, but passive. The pistol-detonation trick converts it into an offensive option that punishes grouped enemies, which changes how you might approach certain combat encounters entirely.

The key here is that nothing about the game changed. The interaction was always there, sitting quietly in the physics of how projectiles and environmental objects interact. The community just needed three weeks post-launch to find it and put a name to it.

Whether Ubisoft treats this as a bug or an unintended feature worth keeping is the open question now. Given that Black Flag Resynced hit 3.5 million sales within its first two weeks, there are a lot of players actively experimenting with its systems. The odds of Ubisoft patching something this popular feel slim, but it has happened before with exploits that were more entertaining than harmful.
