Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement has been delayed to 2027 505 | ResetEra

"We have made the decision to move the game's release to the year 2027."

That's the word from Koji Igarashi, the producer behind the Bloodstained series, delivered in a personal video message posted today. Publisher 505 Games and developer ArtPlay have officially pushed Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night sequel Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement out of its planned 2026 release window. The new target is simply 2027, with no specific date attached.

What IGA actually said

Igarashi's message was measured and direct. Development has entered its "final stages," he said, and the team is working to make the game the best it can be. New screenshots were released alongside the announcement, and IGA mentioned that gameplay footage should be coming soon.

"We understand that this is disappointing news for our fans, but everyone on the development team is working hard," he added. "We truly appreciate your continued support."

Here's the thing: the delay wasn't a total shock to anyone paying close attention. The Scarlet Engagement had been quietly absent from major showcases throughout 2026, and no concrete gameplay had surfaced since the game was first announced in June 2025. A year-plus development cycle without a single public gameplay clip is a pretty reliable signal that a release date is more aspirational than locked in.

tip
The Scarlet Engagement was originally announced as part of a State of Play presentation in June 2025, targeting a 2026 release for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.

From 2026 window to 2027: what changed

When the game was revealed last year, the 2026 window felt plausible on paper. ArtPlay had shipped Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night back in 2019 after a long Kickstarter-backed development cycle, so the studio knows how to finish a project. The Scarlet Engagement is a larger, more ambitious follow-up built for current-gen hardware only, which naturally adds complexity.

The scope alone justifies extra time. The game's feature set is considerably bigger than its predecessor:

  • A dual-character system letting players control both Leo and Alex simultaneously
  • The series' largest map to date, with a full day/night cycle that actively changes gameplay
  • The Epiphany Combat System, which unlocks new moves and abilities as you fight
  • Crafting, cooking, and armor customization with visible character appearance changes

That's a lot of systems to tune. Rushing any one of them out the door would hurt the final product, and IGA's team clearly decided the extra runway was worth the wait.

New players, returning fans, and a bigger world

One notable design choice is that The Scarlet Engagement is built to work as a standalone entry. New players can jump in without any knowledge of the previous game, while longtime fans will find story connections to the broader Bloodstained universe. The game is set during an early chapter of the series' timeline, so it functions as a prequel of sorts rather than a direct continuation.

For fans who spent serious time with Ritual of the Night, the strategy guides and resource guides for the original are worth revisiting while the wait continues. The combat DNA carries over in meaningful ways, and brushing up on the first game's systems will give you a head start when The Scarlet Engagement eventually arrives.

tip
The Scarlet Engagement is confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. No Switch 2 version has been announced, though some fans have already started asking for one.

What "final stages" actually means for the timeline

IGA's claim that development is in its final stages is encouraging, but "final stages" in game development can mean anything from three months to well over a year. Polish, QA, certification, and localization all live in that window. The fact that gameplay footage hasn't been shown yet suggests the team isn't quite ready to open the door fully, even if the core experience is largely complete.

The 2027 target gives ArtPlay room to breathe without locking them into a specific quarter. Expect a proper gameplay reveal sometime in the next few months, likely timed to a major showcase or a dedicated ArtPlay event.

For anyone who wants to get ahead on action games in the meantime, the wait for The Scarlet Engagement just got a bit longer, but IGA's track record suggests the extra time will show up in the final product.
