Thirty years of Diablo history is about to crash back into Diablo IV all at once. At BlizzCon 2026's opening ceremony, Blizzard confirmed that Season of Hell's Legacy goes live on September 15 at 5:30pm UK time, bringing with it the return of Deckard Cain, rematches against all three original Prime Evils, and the game's long-awaited debut on Nintendo Switch 2.
This is the franchise's 30th anniversary season, and Blizzard is clearly treating it as a victory lap through everything that made Diablo what it is.
Cain's spirit and the Soul Splinter system
The season's story kicks off with Deckard Cain's spirit returning to warn players that echoes of the three original Prime Evils have resurfaced across Sanctuary. Each demon has retreated to a location that longtime fans will recognize immediately: Diablo lurks in Tristram Cathedral, Baal has claimed the Arreat Summit, and Mephisto waits in the Durance of Hate.
Here's the thing that makes this more than a nostalgia trip. Defeating each Prime Evil rewards a Soul Splinter, a fragment of that demon's power that players can equip. The catch is a real one: absorbing a demon's essence also increases your vulnerability to that same demon's attacks. It's a risk-reward loop that adds genuine decision-making to the seasonal progression.
Nine new Legacy Uniques join the game permanently alongside the season, including a returning Stone of Jordan for those who know what that item means to the franchise's history. Waking Nightmares enemy encounters also arrive, recreating specific moments from across Diablo's three-decade run.
Diablo 4 hits Nintendo Switch 2 with the full package
The Switch 2 launch is simultaneous with the season drop. The Age of Hatred Collection bundles the base game with both the Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred expansions, and it supports full cross-play and cross-progression with every other platform version.
That cross-progression detail matters. Switch 2 players won't be starting from scratch or locked out of content their friends have on PC or console. They're jumping straight into the same seasonal ecosystem, including Season of Hell's Legacy from day one.

Blizzard also confirmed a new class is on the way. The Amazon makes her first appearance in Diablo IV, arriving sometime in the first half of 2027 with a bow and javelin as her signature weapons. Four builds are planned: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander.
That's a meaningful addition to the class roster, and the build variety suggests Blizzard is aiming for the same flexibility the existing classes offer at endgame. The Amazon won't be part of Season of Hell's Legacy, so the September 15 launch is entirely focused on the anniversary content and Switch 2 rollout.
