Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred Review

Season 13 of Diablo 4 pushes the Season Challenge system further than any previous season, extending the rank ceiling all the way to Rank 9. That means more grind, more bosses to defeat, and more rewards to chase, including a healthy stack of Resplendent Sparks that make Mythic Unique hunting genuinely viable this time around. You will need to complete the Lord of Hatred campaign to unlock the full challenge track, but once you do, there is a clear path from beginner objectives all the way to Torment XII endgame content.

What are the Season Challenges in Diablo 4 Season 13?

Season Challenges work the same way they have since their last rework. Each rank has a Capstone Requirement, one specific task you must complete to unlock the next rank and claim that rank's primary rewards. Alongside the capstone, every rank offers a set of Bonus Objectives that reward crafting materials, experience tomes, caches, and skill points. Most bonus rewards can only be claimed once, though some skill points and crafting rewards carry over to alternate characters.

The key thing to understand is that you do not need to complete every bonus objective before moving on. Progress the capstone when you can, and return to bonus objectives as your character gets stronger.

Season challenge rank overview

Rank I through Rank III: Getting started

Rank I

Capstone Requirement: Complete the Lord of Hatred campaign, or complete the Vault of the Crucible (Monster Level 30, Hard difficulty) in the Scouring Sands of Kehjistan.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Skill Point, New (Suffix), Recruit (Suffix), Archetype Cache, Experience Tome, 1 Smoldering Ashes.

Rank I is designed to ease you in. Bonus objectives include salvaging 20 Magic items at the Blacksmith, picking up a Mercenary, completing 3 World Events in Skovos, and finishing a Kurast Undercity run. One optional objective asks you to reach Level 30 as a Paladin or Warlock, but the reward is only an Experience Tome, so skip it if you are playing a different class.

Rank II

Capstone Requirement: Complete Hellish Descent (Monster Level 60, Penitent difficulty) in the Dismal Foothills of Hawezar.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Skill Point, Last Port of Call (Emblem), Archetype Cache, Experience Tome, Lair Key, Artificer's Obelisk, 1 Smoldering Ashes.

Clearing Rank II unlocks The Pit and The Tower, both of which are tied to Paragon Board Glyph upgrades. You cannot improve Glyphs without running The Pit, so this rank is a must. Bonus objectives here include completing Helltides on Hard difficulty or higher, crafting a Nightmare Dungeon Sigil at the Occultist, and socketing a Rune of Ritual alongside a Rune of Invocation to form a Runeword. The Kurast Undercity with Max Attunement on Expert difficulty sounds intimidating, but Party Finder makes it manageable.

Rank III

Capstone Requirement: Complete Enclave of Darkness (Tier 12, Torment I) in the Westering Lowlands of Scosglen.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Skill Point, 4 Paragon Points, Season Rank Laurel (Title), Archetype Cache, Experience Tome, 50 Forgotten Souls, 1 Smoldering Ashes.

This is where The Pit grinding begins in earnest. Bonus objectives include completing Tier 10 or higher in The Pit to unlock Torment I, conquering 3 Strongholds, and opening 5 Silent Chests with Murmuring Obols. Silent Chests are the most annoying objective here due to their random placement across Sanctuary. The fishing quest also appears at this rank, unlocking the Cast Fishing Line action and rewarding the Proficient Title Prefix.

Rank IV through Rank VI: The mid-game grind

Rank IV

Capstone Requirement: Complete Den of the Apostate (Tier 18, Torment II) in the Southern Expanse of Kehjistan.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Skill Point, 4 Paragon Points, Hateful Heraldry (Mount Trophy), Archetype Cache, Experience Tome, 100 Forgotten Souls, 2 Smoldering Ashes.

Rank IV introduces Torment II content and starts stacking up the boss list. The Beasts Beneath objective requires defeating Tormented Echo of Varshan, Echo of Grigoire, Beast in the Ice, and Lord Zir, then using Lair Keys to open their Hoards. The Gate to Hell objective asks for 6,666 Aether collected during Infernal Hordes on Torment I or higher. The Butcher of Butchers objective, defeating 10 Butchers in Torment II, is down to luck and patience.

The Delved Deep objective unlocks Torment II by completing Artificer's Tier 15 or higher and improving a Paragon Glyph to Rank 10. Complete this before the capstone if you can.

Rank V

Capstone Requirement: Defeat any Lair Boss in Torment IV or higher.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Skill Point, 4 Paragon Points, Arboreal Animus (Emblem), Mystery Greater Archetype Cache, Ancient Memory (Exp), 400 Forgotten Souls, 2 Smoldering Ashes.

Torment IV used to be the hardest difficulty in Diablo 4, but Season 13 treats it as a mid-tier stepping stone. The Arduous Task objective unlocks Torment IV by completing Artificer's Tier 25 or higher and improving 3 Paragon Glyphs to Rank 20. Ancient Memories earned here can be stored for alternate characters, so do not ignore them.

The Master of the Forge bonus objective requires Masterworking 8 items to Quality 10 or higher and Tempering Affixes onto 16 Ancestral Legendary items. Start working toward this as soon as you have the materials.

Rank VI

Capstone Requirement: Defeat any Greater Lair Boss in Torment VI or higher.

Capstone Rewards: 1 Resplendent Spark, 4 Paragon Points, Loathroot (Pet), Mystery Greater Archetype Cache, Ancient Memory, 400 Forgotten Souls, 2 Smoldering Ashes.

Rank VI is where the grind starts feeling genuinely demanding. The Knock At The Gate of Hell objective requires completing Artificer's Tier 40 or higher to unlock Torment VI and improving 3 Paragon Glyphs to Rank 30. The Echoes of Hatred objective, completing Tier 20 or higher during a run of Echoing Hatred, depends on a rare item drop to even access the event. Do not stress about it unless you get lucky.

The Fishing Trip bonus, catching a fish in all seven regions (Scosglen, Fractured Peaks, Kehjistan, Dry Steppes, Hawezar, Nahantu, and Skovos), rewards the Fisherman Suffix title. Low stakes, but a nice break from the endgame grind.

Rank VII through Rank IX: Endgame territory

Rank VII

Capstone Requirement: Defeat the Echo of Lilith in Torment VIII or higher.

Capstone Rewards: 4 Paragon Points, Gilded Season Rank Laurel (Title), Crux of the False Prophet, Resplendent Cache, Atavistic Echo (Exp), 1 Neathiron, 800 Forgotten Souls, 1600 Obducite.

The Crux of the False Prophet drops directly from the capstone reward, which saves you from having to farm it separately. The Awaiting Torment objective unlocks Torment VIII by completing Artificer's Tier 60 or higher and improving 3 Paragon Glyphs to Rank 45.

The Bane of Astaroth objective requires using an Escalation Sigil and defeating both Astaroth and the Amalgam of Rage in Torment VIII. The Grand Gems crafting objective at the Jeweler is a good habit to build regardless, since Grand Gems are a meaningful upgrade for your character.

Rank VIII

Capstone Requirement: Defeat the Echo of Mephisto in Torment X.

Capstone Rewards: Laurel of Hatred (Title), 1 Resplendent Spark, Resplendent Cache, Sanctuary's (Prefix), Hatred (Suffix), 2 Neathiron, 1600 Forgotten Souls, 10 Volatile Primordial Dust, 2 Enhanced Primordial Dust, 3200 Obducite.

The Echo of Mephisto is Season 13's new Pinnacle Boss, and you need to defeat it on Torment X to pass this rank. The The Pit of the Artificer objective unlocks Torment X by completing Artificer's Tier 80 or higher and improving 3 Paragon Glyphs to Rank 50.

The Monster Mash objective, defeating 6,666 Elite or Champion Monsters in Torment IX, rewards a Resplendent Spark on top of the archetype cache. The Unyielding Ascent objective requires reaching Paragon Level 250. Both are time investments, but the Spark rewards make them worth targeting.

Rank IX

Completion Requirement: Complete any 10 of the listed Rank IX objectives to claim the Gilded Laurel of Hatred.

Rewards: Gilded Laurel of Hatred, 3 Resplendent Sparks, Resplendent Cache, Mystery Ancestral Archetype Cache, Ancestral Nahantu Cache, Ancestral Skovos Cache, 4 Neathiron, 3200 Forgotten Souls, 25 Volatile Primordial Dust, 5 Enhanced Primordial Dust, 6400 Obducite.

Rank IX does not ask you to complete every objective, just 10 of them. That flexibility is the smartest design decision in the entire challenge track. Pick the activities you are already running and let the completions stack naturally.

The most accessible Rank IX objectives for most players are Endless Depths (10 Undercity runs in Torment XI), Silence the Whispers (50 Bounty Caches from the Tree of Whispers in Torment XI), and Tormented Offerings (66,666 Aether in Infernal Hordes in Torment XI). The hardest are the Torment XII boss kills, but each one rewards a Resplendent Spark, making them the highest-priority targets if your build can handle it.

How to approach Rank IX efficiently?

With 22 possible Rank IX objectives available, you have a lot of room to play to your strengths. The Torment XII boss objectives each reward a Resplendent Spark, so if your build is strong enough, prioritize Mephisto (Torment XII), Darkness to Dawn (Echo of Lilith, Torment XII), and Bane of the Tormented (Astaroth and Amalgam of Rage, Torment XII). That alone covers 3 of your 10 required completions and nets 3 extra Sparks on top of the rank reward.

For players not yet at Torment XII, the Undercity, Whispers, and Infernal Hordes objectives at Torment XI are all activities you would be running anyway. Stack them naturally.
