Blood Wave is the strongest-ranked Necro build in Diablo IV, but Minion Mages are the better starting recommendation if you want low initial gear requirements and an undead frontline. Choose Bone Spirit for fast farming once you can support its Essence demands, or Golem if boss damage matters more than clearing speed. The practical starting point below is Minion Mages, followed by the changes that make each alternative worth choosing. These are endgame setups for a Level 70 Necromancer with Torment 1 unlocked.
This guide covers Season 15, Hell's Legacy, with ranking context for patch 3.2.3 (Build #73883). Later balance updates can change the recommendations.
Which Necro build should you choose?
Your best Necromancer build depends on the content you want to repeat. Golem's boss damage is appealing, but its slower farming and AI make it a different proposition than a mobile Bone Spirit setup.
| Build | Best for | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood Wave | Players prioritizing the highest-ranked Necromancer option | Strong area damage and durability | Kessime's Legacy gates its top-end performance |
| Minion Mages | Your first endgame army | Low starting gear requirements and a frontline | The finished setup needs specific gear, and you can still be squishy |
| Minion Singularity | Pit and Tower pushing | A specialized pushing alternative to Mages | Requires different minion choices |
| Bone Spirit | Fast farming and strong area clear | Rapid Spirit casts and Sever mobility | Essence management and demanding gear |
| Golem | Bossing and Pit progression | Heavy Iron Golem damage | Slow farming and Golem AI |
Is Blood Wave the best choice?
Blood Wave holds S-tier in Season 15, while Summon and Bone Spirit sit in A-tier. If you're returning after our Season 14 class and build rankings, those are the Season 15 placements to work with.
Kessime's Legacy is the defining Unique for Blood Wave's top end. Patch 3.2.1 also raised the Path of Darkness variant's Desecrated Ground damage from 600% to 800%, while the Hematolagnia variant's Essence cost increased from 50 to 70.
For a first endgame character, Minion Mages have a clearer entry path: build your Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance, then add the items that expand and strengthen your army.
How do you start a Minion Mages build?
Best for players who want an army that can progress through endgame without needing the finished equipment set immediately.
Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance are your first priorities. Attack Speed is especially important because reaching 100% maximizes the relevant Cult Leader multiplier.
| Priority | Endgame target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed | 100% | Maximizes the Cult Leader multiplier |
| Critical Strike Chance | 100% | A primary target before additional damage multipliers |
| Maximum Life | 30,000 | Establishes the setup's recommended Life baseline |
| Damage scaling | Critical Strike and Vulnerable damage multipliers | Improves damage after the core targets are covered |

Minion endgame stat targets
How should you command the army?
Use Book of the Dead to configure your minion types. The Mages setup centers on Skeletal Mages - Shadow, with The Undercrown allowing your command function to direct the Mages as well.
Your core combat priorities are:
- Command your minions onto the target you want dead. The Undercrown makes this command useful for directing your Shadow Mages, too.
- Keep Army of the Dead active. It adds damage to the setup.
- Activate Golem when you need Unstoppable. Its activation also grants Ferocity stacks.
- Use Sever for travel until you obtain Enigma. It supplies the dash that keeps the army moving between fights.
While building toward that setup, Iron Maiden: Blood Maiden opens starter pulls, and Corpse Tendrils gathers enemies once a corpse becomes available. Grouping targets gives your minions a better opportunity to apply their area damage.
Which gear should Minion Mages prioritize?
The finished Mages setup needs more than a large summon count. The Undercrown, The Hand of Naz, and your damage Aspects each solve a different part of the build.
| Item or Aspect | What it contributes | Upgrade advice |
|---|---|---|
| The Undercrown | Additional Shadow Mages, a damage multiplier, and Mage command targeting | First in the Mages Mythic priority order |
| The Hand of Naz | One additional Mage and a damaging area effect | Prioritize after The Undercrown |
| Blood Moon Breeches | Minion hits can apply both curses, alongside a damage multiplier | Builds curse delivery into your army's attacks |
| Infinity | A large damage increase | Replace Gold Find with the Critical Strike Damage multiplier |
| Enigma | Mobility, damage reduction, and additional skills | Your major movement upgrade |
| Aspect of Reanimation | A 90% minion damage multiplier while minions remain alive | Keep your army alive to maintain the benefit |
| Exploiter's Aspect | Damage against Unstoppable enemies | Useful for dense, high-health Pit and Tower packs |
The Mages Mythic acquisition order is The Undercrown, The Hand of Naz, Blood Moon Breeches, Infinity, and Enigma. Treat this as an upgrade priority, not a requirement to collect everything before starting.
Which charms and Soul Splinters should you use?
Endgame Mages use a six-slot charm setup. Look for at least one additional damage multiplier, or Critical Strike Chance if you still need it to reach the target.
Berú of the Black Shroud supplies a useful two-piece damage bonus. Berú of the Waking Touch contributes damage and survivability.
For Season 15 Soul Splinters, prioritize these jewelry gems in order:
- Abyssal Splinter of the Black Soulstone
- Abyssal Splinter of Anguish
- Abyssal Splinter of Pain

When should you switch to Golem, Bone Spirit, or Singularity?
A new Necromancer variant should solve a problem you actually have. Golem emphasizes boss damage, Bone Spirit offers faster farming, and Singularity specializes the army for pushing.
Choose Golem for boss-focused progression
Golems - Iron supplies the main damage, while the other minions provide utility. The endgame combat sequence connects enemy grouping with your Golem attack and Banished Lord's Talisman:
- Cast Corpse Tendrils to group enemies, make them Vulnerable, and gain 5% Critical Strike Chance.
- Activate Golems - Iron to direct their attack.
- Once you gain an Overpower stack, cast Blood Lance to activate Banished Lord's Talisman.
- Use Army of the Dead for its damage and multipliers.
The Golem Mythic priority is Banished Lord's Talisman, Leoric's Crown, and Blood Moon Breeches. Phoba of Desecration adds cooldown support, damage reduction, and a damage multiplier.
Skip Golem if your main frustration is slow farming. Enigma helps you travel, but the build still has a slower clear profile and relies on Golem AI.
Choose Bone Spirit for fast farming
Bone Spirit's cooldown-removing upgrade shifts the main problem to Essence generation. Vengeful Sinew is a central upgrade, with maximum Essence and Essence regeneration as desirable rolls.
Aspect of Bursting Bones scales its multiplier with maximum Essence up to 200. Berú of the Bone Weaver also supports the build with Essence generation and a damage multiplier.
For the traditional active-casting setup, open with Bone Storm, group enemies with Corpse Tendrils, and repeatedly cast Bone Spirit. Use Sever to reposition and create corpses; in the manual corpse-consumption setup, cast Skeletal Mages - Shadow every 8 seconds to maintain Flesh-eater.
Keep Bone Storm active. Aspect of Rapid Ossification supports its cooldown as you spend resources, making that upkeep part of the Spirit casting loop.
Choose Singularity for Pit and Tower pushing
Singularity is the specialized minion alternative for pushing. Its defining change is Skeleton Mage: Singularity instead of Skeleton Mage: Coven.
Use enough ranks in Skeleton Warrior: Litany of Death to reach its 24% Critical Strike Chance contribution. Golem: Gargantua supplies Attack Speed support for Cult Leader, making these minion choices part of the setup rather than interchangeable extras.
Which Glyphs should you level first?
Use the Pit to upgrade your Glyphs, and follow the order for the build you're actually playing. Mage is the first priority for the standard Mages setup, while Golem and Essence lead their respective alternatives.
| Build | First | Second | Third | Fourth | Fifth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minion Mages | Mage | Essence | Deadraiser | Warrior | Abyssal |
| Golem | Golem | Gravekeeper | Essence | Deadraiser | Mage |
| Bone Spirit | Essence | Gravekeeper | Amplify | Corporeal | Eliminator |
Common mistakes
- Chasing damage multipliers before fixing Mages' core stats. Reach 100% Attack Speed and 100% Critical Strike Chance before making those multipliers your main upgrade target.
- Letting the army distract you from ground effects. Your minions can tank enemies while your Necromancer remains vulnerable to hazards.
- Treating Bone Spirit as resource-free because its cooldown is removed. Essence generation is still the build's main management problem.
- Choosing Golem primarily for farming speed. Its bossing strength comes with slower farming and AI limitations.
Pro tips
Make separate speed-farming adjustments
For Mages speed farming, replace Infinity with Insight to support frequent Teleport use. Swap the Essence-generation boot choice for additional Evade charges.
Patch 3.2.3 fixed Horadric Cube rerolling for several affixes, including Critical Strike Damage. That matters when refining equipment after your core stat targets are covered.
Pick mercenaries for the help you need
For Minion and Golem setups, Subo contributes map visibility and a small damage increase, while Aldkin adds damage reduction. Bone Spirit can also use Raheir for defensive support and a damage multiplier.
Mercenaries unlock during the Vessel of Hatred campaign. In solo play, you can have one hired mercenary and a reinforcement that assists under particular conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can you start these builds before Level 70?
These endgame setups assume a Level 70 character with Torment 1 unlocked. Minion builds have low initial gear requirements, but their finished versions still need specific items.
Where does minion Fortify come from?
A temper that gives minion attacks a chance to Fortify you supplies that effect. It is an equipment contribution, so check your tempers if Fortify is missing.
Does Bone Storm's Roll the Bones variant grant Attack Speed?
It grants Cast Speed after the patch 3.2.1 bug fix. Use that corrected behavior when planning Bone Spirit rather than counting it as an Attack Speed bonus.
