Ex-Rockstar Lead Calls GTA 6 Leaks a 'Nothing Burger' for Good Reason

Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij says the ongoing GTA 6 leaks are a 'nothing burger' because 90% of future players never search for leaked clips.

GTA 6 map got leaked and the community map project was pretty accurate : r/ GTA6

A former Rockstar Games technical director has weighed in on the ongoing Grand Theft Auto 6 leak situation, and his take is about as calm as it gets: relax, it doesn't really matter.

Obbe Vermeij, who served as technical director on titles including GTA 4, posted his thoughts publicly after a hacker known online as Cyberleek spent the past week drip-feeding footage from the game onto the internet. His verdict? “The leaks are a nothing burger.”

Why Vermeij thinks the online panic is overblown

Here's the thing: Vermeij's argument isn't just vibes. His core point is that Rockstar's audience is massive, and the slice of that audience actively hunting for leaked two-minute clips is tiny compared to the total number of people who will eventually buy the game.

"90% of future players don't spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets," he wrote. "They don't have the time and don't want spoilers."

He also puts the leaks in the context of Rockstar's broader marketing approach. The studio has deliberately kept GTA 6 under wraps longer than most publishers would, using mystery as a marketing tool. The result is that any leak feels seismic to the online community, even when the actual damage to the product is minimal. If Rockstar had already released multiple gameplay trailers, these clips would barely register.

The Hot Coffee comparison that puts everything in perspective

Vermeij was at Rockstar during the Hot Coffee scandal, the infamous situation involving a hidden sex mini-game left inside GTA San Andreas that became a full-blown political controversy in the mid-2000s. That was a genuine crisis for Rockstar's New York management.

His read on the current situation is blunt: the Cyberleek footage doesn't come close. "I was there during Hot Coffee. It was a nightmare for management but didn't affect us much. The current leaks are far less consequential."

That's a useful benchmark. Hot Coffee triggered congressional hearings, AO ratings, and pulled copies from store shelves. A hacker posting gameplay clips to pressure a studio into a crypto scheme is a very different category of problem.

tip
Vermeij also noted that even if Cyberleek has access to a playable build of GTA 6, it "probably only runs on a devkit" since development hardware carries far more memory than retail PS5 or Xbox consoles. A consumer-ready build likely doesn't exist yet in that form.

What this means for Rockstar's launch plans

Vermeij's long-term outlook is straightforward. "It looks like GTA 6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so. The leaks are just a tiny blip."

That 15-year projection isn't hyperbole when you look at GTA 5's trajectory. The game launched in 2013 and was still generating significant revenue well over a decade later. Rockstar's parent company Take-Two is clearly taking the leaks seriously at a legal level, having subpoenaed both Microsoft and Discord to identify Cyberleek. But from a commercial standpoint, a few minutes of unfinished footage is unlikely to move the needle on a game with this much built-up demand.

The key here is that the people most exposed to these leaks are the people already paying close attention to every GTA 6 development. They were going to buy the game regardless.

The broader context around Cyberleek's campaign

Cyberleek's motivations add an odd layer to this story. The leaks appear tied to a push promoting a crypto scheme alongside demands that Rockstar commit to protecting players' digital rights. At one point, Cyberleek was reportedly charging $165,000 for ad space on future leak posts.

The footage itself has also been questioned. Other alleged insiders have claimed some of the leaked clips are years old and don't reflect the current state of the game. If accurate, that further deflates the idea that these clips represent a meaningful spoiler of the final product.

For players trying to stay unspoiled ahead of launch, the GTA 6 multiplayer launch details and the latest on when GTA 6 Trailer 3 might drop cover what Rockstar has officially confirmed, without the noise of unverified leaks attached.
