Fortnite OG Season 2 new map and weapon ...

The volcano already erupted. Polar Peak is melting. And underneath all that ice, something massive is waking up. Fortnite OG Season 9 is almost here, and it might be the most action-packed chapter of the OG run yet.

Epic Games has confirmed that Season 9 of Fortnite OG goes live on the morning of June 25. The studio will push a patch on the evening of June 24, pulling the game offline for a few hours before Season 9 drops. Mark your calendars accordingly.

Why Season 9 hits differently

Here's the thing about Fortnite OG: the earlier seasons have been a tough sell for players who never experienced Chapter 1 the first time around. The building mechanics feel dated, the loot pool is sparse, and the map lacks the density of modern seasons. Season 9 breaks that pattern.

The original Season 9 ran in the summer of 2019 and represented the moment Fortnite leaned hardest into spectacle and creativity. A futuristic aesthetic swept the island, wind tunnels changed how players moved, and the season closed with what many still consider the best live event in the game's history. Bringing that back in the OG format gives returning players a genuine nostalgia hit and new players something that actually feels like Fortnite at its most inventive.

The OG Pass: Rox, Singularity, and the chicken knight

Epic hasn't revealed the full OG Pass lineup yet, but leaks point to three skins, all remixes of characters from the original Season 9 battle pass. Rox appears to be confirmed, and given that Singularity just made an appearance in the current Battle Royale season, a remixed version of that character seems like a safe bet for the second slot.

The third skin is the interesting one. If the pattern holds from previous OG passes, expect something more off-the-wall, possibly a new take on Sentinel, the character better known to the community as the chicken knight. That kind of meme-friendly pick would fit the tone of Season 9 perfectly.

tip
The original Season 9 battle pass included Rox, Singularity, and Sentinel as its marquee skins. OG Pass remixes have historically pulled from the same roster, so these three are the most likely candidates.

The Final Showdown: kaiju versus mech, live

The storyline carrying Season 9 picks up directly from where Season 8 left off. The Great Unvaulting and the volcano eruption have left Polar Peak melting, and it turns out the mountain was never a mountain at all. It was The Devourer, a massive kaiju frozen in ice for who knows how long, slowly thawing out as the season progresses.

The player-built response to that threat is Mecha Team Leader, a giant mech constructed to fight back. At the end of Season 9, those two giants clash in an event called The Final Showdown, a spectacle that still gets brought up whenever people debate the best live events in Fortnite's history. That event is coming back in full for OG Season 9, and if you missed it in 2019, this is your shot.

For context on how Season 8 set up this storyline, the Fortnite OG Season 8 release date and start times guide has the full breakdown of what happened before the volcano blew.

A map built for Zero Build

Season 9 reshaped the island with a futuristic theme. Tilted Towers got a full redesign as New Tilted, and Retail Row transformed into Mega Mall. The bigger change for how the game actually plays is the introduction of wind tunnels scattered across the map, which launch players into the air and let them cover ground faster than any previous season allowed.

That mobility boost makes Season 9 the most Zero Build-friendly season of the entire OG run. Without builds to reach high ground quickly, the wind tunnels become a genuine tactical option, and the verticality they create opens up fights in ways the earlier OG seasons simply couldn't.

What's in the loot pool

The Season 9 loot pool vaults the Pump Shotgun, Scoped Revolver, and both the Suppressed and Thermal ARs. In their place comes the Combat Shotgun, designed for mid-range engagements rather than the close-range dominance the Pump offered. Grenades also return to the pool.

As the season progresses, Epic will add the Tactical Assault Rifle, Burst SMG, Drum Shotgun, and Chug Splashes. The Storm Flip item also debuts mid-season, letting players create a temporary mini-storm inside the safe zone or carve out a temporary safe zone while caught in the storm. That item alone changed how late-game circles played out.

The returning weapons carrying over from Season 8 include the Assault Rifle, Scoped Assault Rifle, Minigun, Infantry Rifle, Drum Gun, Tactical Shotgun, Suppressed SMG, Pistol, Suppressed Pistol, Hand Cannon, Flint-Knock Pistol, Heavy Sniper, Bolt-Action Sniper, Grenade Launcher, and Rocket Launcher.

With Season 9 dropping June 25, there's a lot to get across before the patch hits. The Fortnite guides hub has everything you need to get up to speed before the server downtime begins on the 24th.
