What the new trailer actually shows

The release date reveal came packaged with a substantial new trailer, and it fills in a lot of the gaps that the Summer Game Fest 2026 debut left open. Players take control of RE-X, an elite pilot at the helm of the Gundam Helix, accompanied by Vii, a Haro unit built specifically for the Helix that functions as an intelligent assist system during combat.

The story drops RE-X into a conflict against a faction called the Apocalypse, which is where the game's unusual enemy designs come from. These aren't the familiar mechanical forces of classic Gundam conflicts. The Apocalypse features animal-like designs that set Rogue Orbit apart visually from most other entries in the franchise.

A cast worth paying attention to

The trailer introduces several characters RE-X will encounter across the campaign. Sofia is a mysterious young woman monitoring RE-X's movements from the sidelines. April commands the Stellarvane, an independent special-duty vessel running missions against the Apocalypse. Big Paul leads a crew of sand pirates who hunt the Apocalypse and redistribute supplies to settlers. Elaine is a knight commander and exceptional Mobile Suit pilot who leads from the front.

Here's the thing: that's a genuinely varied cast for a Gundam game, and the mix of factions suggests the story isn't just a straightforward military conflict. Whether the writing delivers on that setup remains to be seen, but the character roster gives Rogue Orbit more narrative texture than a lot of action-focused entries in the genre tend to bother with.

Mobile Suit customization goes deep

Customization is clearly one of Rogue Orbit's central pillars. Players can configure their Mobile Suit with different weapons, frames, thrusters, and Apocalypse Units (AP-U), plus full color scheme control. Each weapon brings its own unique actions and skills, so loadout choices will shape how individual battles play out across both ground and aerial zones.

For Gunpla fans, the Collector's Edition is the obvious target. It includes an exclusive HG 1/144 ARK-10 Gundam Helix (Earth Blue ver.) model kit alongside five Gundam Card Game promo cards, a steel case, and all the digital Deluxe content.

Pre-ordering any edition unlocks an early Earth Blue color customization for your Mobile Suit. The Standard Edition covers the base game only, while the Deluxe Edition adds the Premium Mod Skins Set, a 14-color Mobile Suit Color Pack, digital artwork and music, and a Mission Reward Booster.

Bandai Namco's action push and what it means for Gundam fans

Rogue Orbit has been positioned from the start as a play for action game players who might not have a history with Gundam. The fast-paced combat across land and space environments, the new timeline, and the distinct enemy faction all point toward a game designed to pull in players who want a sci-fi action experience first and a Gundam story second.

What most players miss in situations like this is that the two goals don't have to conflict. The hangar customization system connects directly to the Gunpla culture that keeps the franchise's most dedicated fans engaged, while the combat focus and new protagonist give newcomers a clean entry point. The key here is whether the depth of the Mobile Suit building actually feeds into how battles feel, or whether it's surface-level cosmetic work.

With six months between now and the March 5 launch, Bandai Namco has time to show more of the combat systems and clarify how the Apocalypse Units factor into builds. The confirmed date gives the game a real target to aim at in a busy early 2027 window.
