Koei Tecmo CEO Had No Expectations for Pokemon Pokopia

Koei Tecmo CEO Hisashi Koinuma reveals the team built Pokemon Pokopia to be the best-selling Pokemon spin-off ever, but had no real expectations before overseas media made it a global hit.

Pokémon Pokopia: How To Customize & Paint Items & Buildings

"From among our spin-off titles I do feel a strong sense of accomplishment. We did work with the aim to make it the best selling spin-off game, but before launch there weren't any real expectations." That's Koei Tecmo president and CEO Hisashi Koinuma talking about Pokemon Pokopia, the cozy island sim developed by Omega Force that quietly became one of the biggest Pokemon releases in the franchise's 30-year history.

Here's the thing: the gap between "we aimed for this" and "we genuinely didn't expect it" is a fascinating one. Koinuma's comments paint a picture of a studio that set an ambitious internal target, then essentially braced for the worst.

The ambition was always there, the confidence wasn't

Omega Force, best known for the Dynasty Warriors series, isn't the first studio you'd associate with a cozy life sim. So there's a certain logic to why expectations were kept low internally. The genre is competitive, the Pokemon spin-off track record is patchy, and a cozy island builder is a significant departure from what Koei Tecmo typically ships.

Koinuma's account suggests the turning point came from outside the studio entirely. "Directly ahead of launch, lots of overseas media played it and rated it very highly, and then I felt it spread from there," he explained. In other words, the international press essentially lit the fuse before the game even launched.

That's a pattern worth noting. The game wasn't sold on a massive marketing campaign or a franchise legacy moment. It spread because people who played it early couldn't stop talking about it.

Four million copies in five weeks

The numbers back up the hype. Within the first five weeks of release, Pokemon Pokopia crossed 4 million copies sold. To put that in context, that figure immediately placed it inside the top 5 best-selling Pokemon spin-offs of all time, a list that includes Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Pinball, and both Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time and Darkness.

The current spin-off record holder is Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue Rescue Team at 5.85 million copies. At the pace Pokopia was selling, that record looks very reachable.

tip
Around 20% of all Nintendo Switch 2 owners purchased Pokemon Pokopia within the first five weeks of its release, making it one of the fastest-adopted titles on the platform.

On the Switch 2 sales charts, only Donkey Kong Bananza sits ahead of it (excluding Mario Kart World, which launched in a bundle). Nintendo has also announced a Pokemon Pokopia Switch 2 bundle for certain regions, which will push those numbers even further.

What Omega Force actually built

The key here is understanding what Pokopia actually is. This isn't a mainline RPG or a competitive battler. It's a cozy simulation where you build and manage a Pokemon habitat, interact with Pokemon in low-stakes ways, and generally exist in the world without a traditional win condition. The genre has exploded post-Animal Crossing, and Pokopia slots neatly into that space while wrapping it in one of gaming's most recognisable IPs.

Omega Force leaned into accessibility hard. The game rewards casual play sessions, doesn't punish players for logging off, and layers its progression gently enough that it pulls in audiences well beyond the core Pokemon fanbase. If you want to dial in your experience from day one, the best settings guide for Pokemon Pokopia covers everything from text speed to camera controls.

Why Koinuma's honesty matters

There's something refreshing about a CEO admitting the team didn't see the ceiling coming. The gaming industry runs on pre-launch hype cycles, and executives rarely go on record saying they were surprised by their own game's success. Koinuma's comments to Famitsu read as genuinely candid, not PR spin.

What most players miss is that this kind of surprise success story is actually rarer than it sounds. Studios set internal targets all the time. Matching them is one thing. Watching a cozy sim with a Pokemon skin become an international conversation piece is something else entirely.

With a Pokemon Pokopia Switch 2 bundle rolling out in select regions and DLC confirmed for later this summer, the trajectory only points upward. If you're just getting into the game now, the best items to buy first in Pokemon Pokopia is a solid starting point before that content lands.
