"This is Warfare Without Limits" , that is the official framing from Activision and Infinity Ward around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's pre-launch access window, and it turns out the invitation extends well beyond the Campaign.
Digital pre-orders of Modern Warfare 4 unlock two separate early access windows: Campaign opens on Friday, October 16, and then DMZ, the game's full extraction mode, goes live on Tuesday, October 20. The full launch follows on October 23. That is three days of DMZ time before most players even touch the game.
Who gets in and on what platforms
The early access window applies to anyone who digitally pre-orders or pre-purchases either the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4. Physical copies are not included. Supported platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Vault Edition buyers get a small but meaningful head start inside DMZ itself: three Active Duty Operator slots instead of the standard two, plus a Vault Edition Deployment Kit containing two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks, and two 2-Plate Carriers. For a mode built around persistent gear loss, that starting inventory matters.
What DMZ actually is in MW4
Here's the thing: DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 is not the stripped-back side mode it started as in previous entries. This version is built around a persistent progression system, an upgradeable Forward Operating Base (FOB) that serves as your home between deployments, and a full 70-level DMZ Player Level track that runs independently from the standard 1-55 Multiplayer progression.
The extraction loop drops you and up to two squadmates into Hajin, an open-world exclusion zone. You loot, complete objectives, fight AI enemies and rival Operators, and attempt to exfil with your gear intact. Anything not in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to extract. It is a meaningful risk-reward system, not just a playlist.
The FOB unlocks new stations as you level up. The 3D Printer comes online at DMZ Level 2 and lets you craft gear from looted resources. The Gunsmith opens at Level 10 and uses in-game DMZ Cash to build and attach weapon upgrades. Weapons you find and extract can be brought into the Gunsmith, but to permanently unlock a weapon for repeated purchase you need to find and extract with its Weapon Manual first. The Vendor at Level 5 rotates daily stock, so there is a reason to log in consistently.
For players wondering what replaced Zombies, the DMZ mode in MW4 is the answer worth reading about in detail before you drop in.
The Operator system is new and worth understanding early
Active Duty Operators in DMZ are not just skins. Each Operator earns XP through successful deployments, levels up their Dog Tag through 18 stages (Steel through Onyx), and accumulates Trait Points spent across three trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist. There are 66 Traits total, but a single Operator caps at 18 points, so every build involves real trade-offs.
If your Operator is eliminated and you fail to exfil, they go MIA. Getting them back costs DMZ Cash from your in-game Bank, scaled to how many Traits they have. The more you invest in an Operator, the more expensive a bad deployment becomes. That tension is the core loop.
Prestiging an Operator after maxing their 18 Trait Points grants a permanent random Prestige Trait. The first Prestige requires two Rare weapons with three attachment slots, a Rare Plate Carrier, a Rare Backpack, four Rare 3D Printer Ingredients, and 200,000 DMZ Cash. The second Prestige scales to Epic rarity across the board and costs 300,000 DMZ Cash. Third Prestige and beyond requires Legendary gear and 500,000 DMZ Cash each time.
Three days is more than it sounds
Players who get into DMZ on October 20 will have their FOB partially built, their first Operator leveled, and their initial weapon unlocks sorted before the full player base arrives on October 23. That progression lead is real, especially in a mode where rival Operators can loot your Dog Tag and your gear if they take you down.
The pre-order editions and bonus breakdown covers every edition, platform perk, and retailer bonus if you are still deciding which version to pick up before the October 20 window opens.
