NieR:Automata’s November 6, 2026 Steam update increased the storage requested during installation from 50GB to 366.56GB. The inflated figure is an installation requirement, not the amount of space the game ultimately occupies on disk.
The official NieR PR account acknowledged the issue the same day and apologized to players.
What the Steam update added
The patch notes list support for three additional languages:
- Simplified Chinese.
- Traditional Chinese.
- Korean.
This is NieR:Automata’s first Steam update in five years. Its previous patch arrived on July 15, 2021, making the new language options the first changes to that version in a substantial stretch.
The game combines JRPG storytelling with fast-paced hack-and-slash combat in a post-apocalyptic setting. Its campaign follows android soldiers fighting machine lifeforms on an Earth humanity has abandoned for the Moon, with three android protagonists uncovering the conflict’s deeper story.
Why Steam asks for so much space
The game and its DLC occupy around 40-50GB after installation. The excessive free-space check occurs when downloading the base game and its add-ons together, creating a much larger hurdle before installation can begin.
All eight DLC entries display storage requirements matching the size of the base game. Those figures stack with the main game’s requirement during the combined installation process. The developers have not established the underlying cause publicly, so the inflated entries should not be treated as confirmation that the update duplicated the game’s files on disk.
