Probably Stolen's next update has no date yet, but the developers have promised three new starts, Expeditions and a bigger main story, all free. The Junker start is the one they've said is coming first.

Key takeaways

  • Free updates are planned: Junker, Organ Trader and Street Food Vendor starts, Expeditions, a story expansion and new appraisal items.
  • The last patch was 1.0.0.6 on 31 October. Nothing has come out since.
  • The developers said 500,000 copies had sold by 30 October, and it peaked at 174,382 players on 4 November.

What's in the next Probably Stolen update?

The developers listed what's coming after 1.0 in their pre-launch roadmap post on 21 October:

  • Organ Trader starting scenario: "for the Butcher fans."
  • Junker starting scenario: "coming shortly after launch."
  • Street Food Vendor starting scenario.
  • Main storyline expansion: "Which will affect the station and the ending."
  • Expedition: "Recruit various people to send on expeditions, such as hiring a scav for scavenging missions."
  • New appraisal items.

None of these has a date. The launch post on 28 October repeated the list and promised "free regular content updates." The Steam store page already lists "organ dealer" among the jobs you can master, so the Organ Trader is part of the pitch, just not in the game yet.

The Butcher is one of the criminals on the Probably Stolen wanted list, and the 1.0 release expanded his backstory. The developers pitch the Organ Trader start "for the Butcher fans."

The Organ Trader is the one I'd play first. It would fit in with some of the RimWorld runs we've done, because it kind of feels like you're doing war crimes. And it fits the genre so well: people out here are so hard up on their luck that they're selling organs.

When is the Junker update coming?

The developers haven't given a date, only "shortly after launch." It's been just over a week since the 28 October release, and no content update has gone out yet.

The Junker is already in the game as a customer. In the demo, a junker offered me a deal to take everything he had, and I took all his junk. The developers haven't said yet how a start built around him will play.

Expeditions could change scavenging, which costs you at night. When I tried it in the demo, each attempt had a chance of hurting me, and the next morning I'd opened the shop late and missed out on a customer. Sending a hired scav on an expedition instead could take that cost off you, depending on how it works.

I'd much rather send someone else. Losing that first customer in the morning always sucks. If the first customer is the one who buys what you put in the window, you're setting yourself back quite a bit.

What has been patched since launch?

Four hotfixes have Steam posts, all in the first four days:

  • 1.0.0.1 (28 October): reporting Lou to Security no longer lowers your Black Market reputation, and the Merchant now states the discount he actually takes on your difficulty.
  • 1.0.0.2 (28 October): a water rework. The Water Purifier's logic was reworked, the Moisture Farm dropped from 650 to 350, the Water Filter from 50 to 25, and Dr. Jackson's markup from 25% to 15% on Normal.
  • 1.0.0.5 (30 October): a rebindable bell hotkey (B by default), the Water Purifier down from 300 to 250, and auto-rotate while sorting off by default. It also says the Merchant now keeps visiting every Sunday after you buy the store.
  • 1.0.0.6 (31 October): a security update for the modding system, with a warning that "some mods may break."

1.0.0.3 and 1.0.0.4 have no posts of their own. The 1.0.0.5 post says it covers "a couple ongoing patches."

How well is Probably Stolen selling?

The developers reported 200,000 copies in the first few hours on 28 October. By 29 October it was over 350,000 in 24 hours, with 320,000 players and a peak of more than 112,000. On 30 October they announced 500,000 copies sold, with 96% positive reviews from nearly 3,000.

That's a big jump for a game that started out as Deepspace Emporium, whose demo peaked at just 28 players. Our Probably Stolen makeover story covers how that happened.

How many people are playing Probably Stolen now?

Steam's API showed 63,611 people playing at 19:06 UTC on 5 November. The peak so far came on 4 November, when Steam's own most-played chart recorded 174,382 at once. That put it 13th on Steam's most-played list for the day, up from 60th the week before.

So it was still growing a week after launch, before any new content had arrived. The Junker start is the next thing the developers have promised.
