Phantom Blade Zero Unleashes Bloody New Trailer, Donnie Yen & State of Play Announcement For Next Week

S-Game has had Phantom Blade 0 fans waiting a long time for a proper look at what the full game actually plays like. That wait ends August 17.

The studio confirmed a dedicated State of Play presentation scheduled for 7:00 PM PT on August 17, focused entirely on Phantom Blade Zero. The timing might raise eyebrows for players in North America and Europe, but it makes sense given that S-Game is based in China.

What S-Game is actually promising to show

S-Game CEO Soulframe Liang went on the PlayStation Blog to lay out what viewers can expect. The presentation will go deep on the game's core combat systems and introduce never-before-seen characters who are central to the story. Liang specifically called out how expressive player builds can be, which suggests the loadout and weapon customization systems are going to get real screen time, not just a trailer montage.

That framing is worth paying attention to. Previous trailers leaned hard on spectacle, which looked great but left a lot of questions about how the combat actually feels moment to moment. A gameplay deep dive format should answer those.

tip
Pre-orders for Phantom Blade Zero are now live alongside this announcement, and an 11-minute trailer dropped the same day covering new story beats.

Donnie Yen is more than a cameo

The bigger surprise buried in the announcement is the extent of Donnie Yen's involvement. He has been serving as a creative consultant on Phantom Blade Zero since 2023, handling both action choreography and filmmaking direction. On top of that, he provides facial and motion capture for Mó Yuan, the father of the game's protagonist, Soul.

That is a meaningful role, not a name on a poster. Yen's background in martial arts cinema is exactly the kind of reference point S-Game appears to be drawing from with the game's fast, fluid combat style. Having him in the mocap suit for a named character rather than just advising from the sidelines says something about how seriously the studio is taking the game's action direction.

Why this State of Play format matters for the game

Phantom Blade Zero has generated serious attention since its reveal, sitting comfortably in the conversation around adventure games that push action combat in interesting directions. But it has also carried a question mark about depth. The dedicated State of Play format, rather than a slot in a larger showcase, signals S-Game has enough to fill the time properly.

The combat system deep dive is the part to watch. Liang's comments about build expressiveness hint at a system with more mechanical range than the trailers have shown. New characters central to the story also suggests the narrative is getting more attention than expected for what initially looked like a pure action game.

For players who want to be ready when the game releases, the Phantom Blade 0 guides hub will be the place to check once the State of Play drops new details on mechanics and systems.
