You get the Backstreet Courtyard Key in Phantom Blade Zero by returning Chen Zhu's ledger and defeating him as the Ironmask Assassin.
The locked gate is in Pangzhen, but its key comes from the Mountain of Imprisonment. Your route runs through the Ledger of Atonement quest, a ledger hidden below the shrine, and a dialogue choice that starts a boss fight. There is also a follow-up worth doing before you leave: the female puppet beside Chen Zhu starts Bai Xue, which takes you into the courtyard for more rewards.
How do you find Chen Zhu and start the quest?
You need to reach the Mountain of Imprisonment before you can obtain the key. Complete Illusory Pipa to access the region, then progress to the Commander's Platform bell. Searching Pangzhen for a nearby key pickup will not get this gate open.

Find the pair above the arena
After defeating Bi Feng, Giant Saber Commander, take the stairs uphill beyond his arena. You are looking for two NPCs together: an agonized Maskwalker named Chen Zhu, also called the Agonized Ironmask, and a female puppet seated behind him.
Speak to the woman first, then talk to Chen Zhu. His request to recover his ledger starts Ledger of Atonement. Remember the pair's location, because recovering the book is only the first half of the job.
Start the Ledger of Atonement
Where is the Ledger of Atonement?
The ledger is on the lower route beneath the Shrine Outer Gate bell. Getting there requires defeating Kui Yanyan, The Deranged, then continuing below the boss arena rather than stopping at its other pickup.
Follow the route beneath Kui Yanyan
Use these landmarks to reach the ledger:
- Leave the Shrine Outer Gate bell, descend the stairs, and drop into the lower area.
- Defeat Kui Yanyan, The Deranged.
- Locate the ladder in the boss area and climb down.
- Continue along the lower path. At the fork, take the left route toward the cavern with hound enemies.
- Clear the enemies and pass through the rear cave entrance obstructed by wooden crates.
- Beyond the cave, take the stairs descending to the right.
- Pick up the Ledger of Atonement from the ground.
The useful landmarks are the ladder below Kui Yanyan's arena, the hounds, and the descending stairs beyond the cave. If you are still searching the boss arena itself, you have not gone far enough down the route.
Which dialogue choice unlocks the Ironmask Assassin fight?
Bring the ledger back to Chen Zhu and continue the conversation until the response choices appear. Select This won't absolve you of your sins. That is the response that triggers his fight as the Ironmask Assassin.
The other response is Never mind. Leave him be. For the Backstreet Courtyard Key route, choose the accusation and defeat him. Recovering the ledger alone does not award the key.
Once the Ironmask Assassin falls, you receive the Backstreet Courtyard Key. The boss defeat is the requirement for obtaining it; the conversation with the female puppet afterward supplies the next quest and its item.
How do you open the courtyard and finish Bai Xue?
Speak to the female puppet beside Chen Zhu before leaving the mountain. She gives you the Bloodstained Necklace and starts the Bai Xue quest, connecting your new key to the courtyard's follow-up objectives.
Locate the wooden gate in Pangzhen
Return to Pangzhen and use the Green Serpent House bell as your nearest checkpoint. Look for the map spot labeled Usable Item: Backstreet Courtyard Key, which identifies the locked wooden gate in the backstreets.
Interact with the gate to use the key and enter the courtyard. Green Serpent House and the usable-item marker are the useful references here, rather than the route toward Old Man Gen's house.
Locate the Pangzhen courtyard gate
Collect the courtyard's quest rewards
Follow the Bai Xue quest markers inside and interact with Bai Xue's body to obtain a Memory Flower. Continue the quest, then dig at the base of the large tree by the backstreet well to collect the Snow and Blood accessory.

Does the courtyard lead to Old Man Gen's house?
The Backstreet Courtyard gate does not provide access to Old Man Gen's house or the third acolyte scarecrow. Those locations require a different route opened with Flaming Mane. Check your destination before spending more time chasing the courtyard key.

For the alternate route, obtain Flaming Mane from the region boss and follow the main quest to have Lei Dang repair it. Use it on the barrier near the Pond of Fading Song bell, where you fought Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith. That path goes around the back to the house and scarecrow locations.
