One in five Nintendo Switch 2 owners has already bought Pokémon Pokopia. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company confirmed today that the life sim exclusive has crossed 5 million copies sold since its March launch, representing 21% of the console's 23.68 million installed base in just five months.
That number lands Pokopia as the second-best-selling Switch 2 game to date. Mario Kart World sits at the top with 15 million sales, though it shipped bundled with the console at launch. Behind Pokopia sits Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million, making the gap between second and third place surprisingly tight.
From spin-off curiosity to franchise powerhouse
Here's the thing about these numbers: Pokopia was already one of the best-selling Pokémon spin-offs in series history after just four days on shelves. Five months later, that early momentum has only compounded. For a game built around a Ditto disguised as a human befriending Pokémon and rebuilding an island, the concept could have easily been written off as a niche experiment.
The development pedigree helps explain the result. Koei Tecmo'sOmega Force studio handled the build, led by the same directors who worked on Dragon Quest Builders 2. That sandbox construction DNA is visible throughout Pokopia's loop, and it clearly resonated with players well outside the core Pokémon fanbase.
For Koei Tecmo specifically, 5 million copies is a scale the studio rarely sees. The Pokémon license opened doors, but the team had to deliver a game worth walking through them.
What the sales picture actually looks like
The bundled caveat on Mario Kart World is worth keeping in mind. Pokopia earned its 5 million through standalone purchases, which makes the attach rate more meaningful as a signal of genuine demand.
Expansion roadmap keeps momentum building
The sales window is far from closed. A free update and a paid expansion have already shipped, with a second expansion scheduled for late 2026 and a third and final expansion planned for 2027. That content pipeline gives existing players reasons to stay and gives fence-sitters a growing game to jump into.
If you want to get the most out of what's already available, the Pokémon Pokopia Version 2.0.0 patch notes breakdown covers every change from the biggest update so far, including the underwater Dive addition and over 25 bug fixes.
The cozy game market has been expanding for years, but Pokopia's numbers suggest the Pokémon brand can pull players who would never have touched a life sim otherwise. That crossover appeal, combined with a Switch 2 library that is still relatively young, gives the game a long runway.
