Roco Kingdom Chromatic Jinies Take Shiny Hunting Further

Roco Kingdom flips the shiny-hunting formula: chromatic Jinies disguise themselves as 'nightmare' variants until after battle, adding a genuine surprise to every rare encounter.

Roco Kingdom Chromatic Jinies Take Shiny Hunting Further

Roco Kingdom has a twist on rare variant hunting that most creature-capture games haven't tried: you won't actually know you've found a chromatic Jinie until after you've beaten it in battle.

The game, developed by Morefun Studios and carrying 16 years of history in China before its worldwide push, positions its chromatic Jinies as the equivalent of Shiny Pokémon or lucky Pals in Palworld. The mechanic sounds familiar on paper. In practice, it works quite differently.

The disguise that makes every rare encounter matter

When a rare Jinie variant appears in the open world, it shows up under a "nightmare" label. Nothing about the encounter signals that you might be looking at the rarest possible variant. You go into battle, you fight it, and only once it's ready to be captured does the game pull back the curtain on what you actually found.

Roco Kingdom narrative director Xiaoye explained the thinking behind this at Gamescom: "We want the process to be surprising, so we've added a layer of a surprise gift, so that you only know after you beat it in battle, it reveals itself as one of the kinds of variants. If it's a chromatic, you've hit the jackpot."

Here's the thing: that framing recontextualizes every single nightmare encounter. You can never dismiss one as "probably not worth it" because the reveal only comes at the end. The tension doesn't arrive when you spot the Jinie. It arrives when the battle ends.

What changes between a standard Jinie and a variant

Not every nightmare Jinie turns out to be chromatic. Non-chromatic variants still offer meaningful differences from the base form, including changes to move sets and abilities that standard Jinies don't carry. So even a "failed" rare hunt isn't empty-handed.

Chromatic Jinies sit above that tier entirely. Xiaoye described the system as designed to avoid pure stat grinding while still giving players a genuine sense of ownership: "If they are all the same, what's the point? We want a certain type of randomisation, not just in the stats, but in the appearance."

The exact odds of a nightmare variant revealing itself as chromatic weren't shared, but the implication was clear: these won't appear often.

tip
Non-chromatic variants in Roco Kingdom still bring distinct move sets and abilities compared to standard Jinie forms, so every rare encounter carries some reward regardless of the final reveal.

Co-op and the question of who gets the Jinie

Roco Kingdom carries MMO-lite elements, which immediately raises the question of what happens when a rare Jinie appears while you're playing with friends. A race to capture it would undercut the whole design.

Xiaoye addressed this directly: "If you are in the same session, you can enter battle together. If you catch it while in co-op mode, you can give it to another player. It's not a race to get it, we have specific systems to prevent stealing."

The specifics of how that anti-stealing system operates haven't been detailed yet, but the intent is clear. Morefun Studios wants each Jinie to feel uniquely yours, and that philosophy extends to co-op encounters.

What this means for the genre

What most players miss about shiny hunting in creature-capture games is that the excitement peaks at the moment of encounter. You see the different color, you know what you have, and then the hunt is just execution. Roco Kingdom delays that peak deliberately, stretching the anticipation across the entire battle.

It's a small structural shift, but it changes the feel of every rare encounter in the game. Whether the odds and the variant pool are deep enough to sustain long-term hunting is still an open question, one that will only be answerable once the worldwide release arrives and players start logging serious hours.
