Valve's Steam Controller reservation system may give you Steam Deck flashbacks | T3

Valve's Steam Controller launched last month to stronger demand than the company anticipated, and that gap between supply and expectations has now pushed new order fulfillment all the way into 2027.

Valve confirmed the news on its Steam hardware page, stating plainly that the response to the controller has "exceeded our expectations." The company was quick to add that it has "no plans to stop making Steam Controller," but the reality for anyone who hasn't already placed a reservation is a long wait ahead.

Three delivery windows and a 72-hour countdown

To cut through the confusion around wait times, Valve has broken existing reservations into three estimated delivery windows: September 2026, December 2026, and a broader 2027 window with more specific details promised later. Players who already have a spot in the queue can log into their Steam account to check which window applies to their order.

Here's the thing: the reservation system isn't passive. Once Valve sends an email notifying a customer that it's their turn to complete the purchase, that customer has exactly 72 hours to finish the transaction. Miss that window and the reservation is forfeited, dropping the buyer back behind everyone else still in line. That's a tight turnaround, so keeping an eye on your inbox matters.

important
Valve's purchase notification email gives you only 72 hours to complete your Steam Controller order. Missing it means losing your place in the queue entirely.

For anyone who hasn't reserved yet, the math is straightforward: the earliest possible fulfillment date falls somewhere in 2027, with no specific month confirmed at this point.

A strong launch with a few rough edges

The demand makes sense given the reception. Players who got their hands on the Steam Controller early have largely responded positively, but the device isn't without issues. A rumble compatibility problem has made it non-functional in certain games, which is a real concern for a controller positioning itself as a versatile PC gaming peripheral. Valve hasn't publicly addressed a fix timeline for that specific problem.

On a lighter note, the controller apparently plays a recognizable cinematic scream sound effect when dropped or thrown, which is the kind of Easter egg that turns a hardware product into a conversation piece.

If you're the type who obsesses over getting controller inputs dialed in, the wait might actually be useful time. Check out the Fortnite controller settings guide in the meantime to sharpen your setup on whatever you're currently using.

What else Valve has in the pipeline

The Steam Controller situation sits inside a broader stretch of activity for Valve. The Steam Deck recently received a significant price increase tied to ongoing component and memory shortages, a move that landed with some frustration in the PC gaming community. Separately, Valve has indicated that the Steam Machine and a VR headset called the Steam Frame are both targeting a summer release window, though specific dates and pricing remain unconfirmed for either.

That's a lot of hardware moving at once for a company that spent years releasing almost none. The supply strain on the Steam Controller may partly reflect that Valve is managing multiple product lines simultaneously, something it hasn't had to do at this scale in a long time.

For players eyeing any of Valve's upcoming releases or looking to optimize settings across other titles while they wait, the gaming guides hub has options worth bookmarking. And if you're specifically waiting on Marathon controller support details, the Marathon best controller and keyboard settings guide already has early configuration recommendations worth checking out before your hardware arrives.
