Planet Zoo 2 has 136 species, 130 in the base game and 6 in the Deluxe Edition, and Frontier’s Zoopedia lists all of them. That’s the complete list so far. Frontier’s reveals finished when Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13.
Key takeaways
- Planet Zoo 2 has 136 species: 130 Base Game and 6 Deluxe.
- The Zoopedia sorts them into Habitat - Terrestrial, Habitat - Flying, Aquarium and Exhibit.
- The Cheetah, Polar Bear, Koala and Red Kangaroo from the first game aren’t in. Neither are dolphins or whales.
What are all the species in Planet Zoo 2?
The Zoopedia groups animals by Enclosure Type, so the table does too. I split the long rows by animal class, also from the Zoopedia. Anything marked (Deluxe) needs the Deluxe Edition.
| Enclosure Type | Animals | Species |
|---|---|---|
| Habitat - Terrestrial | Mammals (50) | Aardvark, African Leopard, African Savannah Elephant, African Wild Dog, Asian Elephant, Asian Small-Clawed Otter, Bactrian Camel, Binturong, Black Rhinoceros, Black Wildebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Cape Buffalo, Common Hippopotamus, Common Warthog, Eurasian Beaver, Eurasian Brown Bear, Eurasian Lynx, European Bison, Gemsbok, Giant Panda, Golden Lion Tamarin (Deluxe), Goodfellow’s Tree-Kangaroo, Grey Wolf, Grizzly Bear, Lion, Malayan Tapir, Masai Giraffe, Meerkat, Mountain Hare, North Sulawesi Babirusa, Nyala, Plains Zebra, Przewalski’s Horse, Red Deer, Red Panda, Reticulated Giraffe, Ring-Tailed Lemur, Sable Antelope, Siamang, Snow Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Springbok, Sumatran Orangutan, Sumatran Tiger, Sun Bear, Sunda Pangolin, Thomson’s Gazelle, Western Chimpanzee, Western Lowland Gorilla, Wild Boar |
| Habitat - Terrestrial | Reptiles (5) | Galápagos Giant Tortoise, Gharial, Komodo Dragon, Nile Monitor, Saltwater Crocodile |
| Habitat - Terrestrial | Birds (2) | African Penguin, Common Ostrich |
| Habitat - Flying | Birds (12) | Eurasian Bittern, Golden Eagle (Deluxe), Great Hornbill, Greater Flamingo, Javan Green Magpie, Long-Eared Owl, Long-Tailed Parakeet, Secretarybird, Shoebill, Toco Toucan, White-Backed Vulture, White-Tailed Sea-Eagle |
| Aquarium | Fish (13) | Blackspotted Puffer, Clown Triggerfish, Dolphinfish, Giant Grouper, Golden Trevally, Humphead Wrasse, Indian Ocean Oriental Sweetlips, Longfin Batfish (Deluxe), Ocean Sunfish, Pacific Bluefin Tuna, Pacific Sardine, Red Lionfish, Sailfin Snapper |
| Aquarium | Sharks and rays (6) | Blacktip Reef Shark, Great Hammerhead (Deluxe), Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark, Javanese Cownose Ray, Ocellated Eagle Ray, Sand Tiger Shark |
| Aquarium | Mammal and reptile (2) | Hawksbill Turtle, West Indian Manatee |
| Aquarium or Exhibit | Fish (16) | African Tigerfish, Blue and Gold Fusilier (Deluxe), Bluespine Unicornfish, Blunthead Cichlid, Boeseman’s Rainbowfish, Brown Trout, Clown Anemonefish, Clown Loach, Common Rudd, Giant Gourami, Indo-Pacific Sergeant, Koi, Palette Surgeonfish, Schooling Bannerfish, Threespot Damselfish, Yellow Tang |
| Exhibit | Amphibians (8) | American Bullfrog, Axolotl (Deluxe), Danube Crested Newt, Fire Salamander, Giant Slippery Frog, Golden Poison Frog, Lehmann’s Poison Frog, Red-Eyed Tree Frog |
| Exhibit | Reptiles (8) | Boa Constrictor, Common Bluetongue, Desert Horned Viper, Diamondback Terrapin, Eastern Brown Snake, Gila Monster, Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Yellow Anaconda |
| Exhibit | Insects (9) | Cloudless Sulphur, European Peacock, Giant Malaysian Leaf Insect, Goliath Beetle, Menelaus Blue Morpho, Monarch, Old World Swallowtail, Sacred Scarab Beetle, Sri Lankan Rose |
| Exhibit | Other invertebrates (5) | Amazonian Giant Centipede, Giant Forest Scorpion, Giant Tiger Land Snail, Mexican Redknee, Moon Jelly |
The rows add up to 136. Add up the Zoopedia’s four filters instead and you get 152, because those 16 fish count under both Aquarium and Exhibit. The African Penguin and Common Ostrich sit under Habitat - Terrestrial, so neither needs an aviary.
Why do some lists say fewer than 136?
Older lists were written before Frontier finished. Insider Gaming’s list had 121 announced species as of its October 9 update, and the Zoopedia dates the last six, including the Black Rhinoceros and Koi, to launch day. Frontier’s October 28 post says “Planet Zoo 2 features 136 animals”. 130 is the base game on its own.
Which species need the Deluxe Edition?
Six do: Golden Eagle, Golden Lion Tamarin, Great Hammerhead, Axolotl, Blue and Gold Fusilier and Longfin Batfish. Steam has the standard game at $49.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $64.99, so that’s $15 up front, or $17.99 for the Upgrade Pack later.
If you want any of the six, I’d buy Deluxe up front and keep the $2.99. If you don’t care about an Axolotl, you just need the standard game.
What does each enclosure type need?
Frontier’s Animals player guide covers the basics. Habitat - Terrestrial animals need Habitats made with Barriers. Habitat - Flying animals need an aviary built from Barriers, supports and dynamic mesh roofing, plus nests. Aquarium animals have needs like salinity and cleanliness, and Exhibit animals need the right temperature, humidity and salinity.
Not all 136 can leave the zoo either. Frontier’s FAQ says only species with an appropriate Wildlife Reserve can be released, and the Wildlife Reserves guide lists which animals go where. If this table is too much, the starter animals guide narrows it down.
What’s missing compared with the first Planet Zoo?
The first game’s Zoopedia lists 210 animals, 74 more than the sequel. The gap is bigger than it looks, because about 60 of the 136 are new to the series.
Match the two lists by name and Latin name and 77 first-game animals come back, some renamed, like the Wisent, now the European Bison. Eight more are subspecies with no direct match, like the Amur Leopard, and about 125 have no match at all.
Many of the big names were paid packs in the first game. Steam lists the Polar Bear and Reindeer in the Arctic Pack, the Koala and Red Kangaroo in the Australia Pack, the Jaguar in the South America Pack and the Capybara in the Wetlands Animal Pack. None are in the sequel’s Zoopedia, and neither is the Cheetah.
The first game had a Bengal Tiger and a Siberian Tiger. The sequel has one tiger, the Sumatran Tiger, and one penguin, the African Penguin. The only kangaroo is Goodfellow’s Tree-Kangaroo, which isn’t what most people mean when they ask for a kangaroo.
Dolphins and whales aren’t in either, and before anyone gets excited about the table, the Dolphinfish is a fish. Frontier’s FAQ says it’s “keeping a close eye” on conservation work with cetaceans, so I wouldn’t plan a zoo around them.
Will Frontier add more species?
Frontier says the roster will grow but hasn’t put dates on it. Its October 2 reveal post says the game “will continue to grow over time”. On Steam, the only add-on with animals so far is the Deluxe Upgrade Pack.
Wikipedia has the first game at 76 species in the base game, plus 134 through 20 DLC packs, so we could see some missing names come back the same way. That’s my guess, not an announcement. If a Polar Bear is the reason you’re buying, I’d wait until Frontier names it.
