How do you start the Rescue Nate quest?

Head to Sunstone Island and enter Nate's Cave at GPS (-914.0, 207.4, -1027.8). The entrance sits on a small cliff just behind the Merlin Witch NPC. Walk inside and you'll find Miso, Nate's cat, waiting at the desk. Interact with Miso to hear the situation, and the cat will walk you over to a computer that needs a four-symbol PIN to unlock.

How to find all four PIN symbols

Here's the thing most players miss: the PIN combination is unique to each player's game. You cannot copy someone else's code. You need to physically inspect all four clue spots in your own session and record what symbol appears at each one.

• PIN 1: Check the top of the stool next to the bedroom, to the left of the computer.
• PIN 2: Go downstairs and examine the bookshelf behind the sofa.
• PIN 3: Head toward the cave entrance and look inside the car. The symbol is on the front seat.
• PIN 4: Inspect the left side of the computer table itself.

Once you have all four symbols recorded, return to the computer and enter them in order.

How to restore Nate's Blade

After cracking the PIN, the quest shifts into a two-item collection phase. You need both the Broken Blade and the Crimson Centerpiece before anything else progresses.

Getting the Broken Blade

The Broken Blade is inside the Depths Maze, which requires a bit of setup to access. First, locate a Strange Whirlpool that spawns randomly across the ocean. Jump into it to reach Vertigo, then fish out the Depth Key and use it to open the cave entrance to the Depths.

Bring a Hexed Enchanted Relic and an Abyssal Enchant Relic to the Depths Maze entrance at GPS (1163.4, -730.1, 1325.4). Swim through the underground maze to its far end. The Broken Blade sits beside the statue holding the Rod of Depths at GPS (1705, -900, 1445).

Getting the Crimson Centerpiece

The Crimson Centerpiece comes from fishing inside Crimson Cavern, not from exploring. Use your Traveler's Whistle to travel to Desolate Deep, then complete the Crimson Guard's Quest to unlock access to Crimson Cavern. Equip a rod built for scavenging (the Scavenger Rod works well here) and start fishing. The Crimson Centerpiece drops as a rare secondary item with a 1 in 8 chance, so expect to spend time here before it appears.

How to unlock the Unrestricted Nate's Blade

Restoring the blade's powers takes four separate challenges spread across multiple locations. Each one requires Perfect Catches, meaning sloppy fishing won't count.

Part 1: Perfect Catch all 10 fish at Moosewood Dock

The Whiptail Catfish is the one that will hold you up. It only spawns at night during Spring or Autumn, so plan your session around those conditions rather than grinding through the wrong season.

Part 2: Perfect Catch 10 fish at Roslit Volcano (Mythical rarity or lower)

Coal bait covers most of this list, so stock up before heading to the volcano. The Obsidian Swordfish requires Minnow bait specifically, and only spawns during Summer in Windy or Clear weather.

Part 3: Perfect Catch 20 Colossal Squid at Snowcap Island

Travel to Snowcap Island, enter Snowcap Cave, and fish at the exclusive pool inside. You must use Nate's Blade for every catch to have them count toward the objective.

Part 4: Complete the full collection challenge

Part 4 is the longest stage by a significant margin. Open your Quest Book to track exactly what you still need. The full checklist:

• Catch every original fish using Nate's Blade (0/126)
• Catch 5 fish with each original Fishing Rod (0/15)
• Obtain every free and obtainable original Title (0/45)
• Collect every original Boat (0/10)

Work through the Quest Book systematically rather than tackling everything at random. Boats, Lanterns, and Badges have fixed acquisition paths, so checking those off first gives you a clearer picture of what grinding remains. After completing all objectives, return to Miso inside Nate's Cave to continue the investigation.

Where to find Nate's Crown, Glasses, and Lantern

Miso will point you toward three hidden items. All three are in underwater locations near the route to Desolate Deep, so equip your diving gear before heading out.

• Nate's Crown: GPS (-791, 130, -3094) — on top of the red buoy. You can also purchase advanced diving gear here.
• Nate's Glasses: GPS (-852, -331, -3030) — underwater, beside a dead skeleton near a Stop signboard. Dive straight down from the red buoy to reach it.
• Nate's Lantern: GPS (-951, -244, -2713) — inside the hidden Maverick Merchant Shop underwater. On the route to Desolate Deep, turn left instead of right to find the secret shop. The lantern is beside the Crab Cage.

How do you find Dr. It Fish's Lair?

With all three items collected, the lair entrance is right next to where you found Nate's Lantern. Look for a large crack in the wall nearby. Equip Nate's Blade and use it to smash through the cracked wall to enter.

Inside, confront Dr. It Fish and watch the cutscene play out. After it ends, go to the first floor and find Nate sitting in a corner. Speak with him to complete the rescue and finish the main quest.

How to unlock the Miso companion

Rescuing Nate opens up one more reward. Return to Nate's Cave on Sunstone Island and search the room for a yellow cheese cube. Its spawn location is randomized per player, so check the bookshelf, the car, and the computer desk if you don't spot it immediately.

Find the cheese and feed it to Miso, who is sitting behind the computer. You can then add Miso as a permanent companion with the following passive bonuses:

• Scratch: Every 3 seconds, 40% chance to scratch and grant +3% Progress Speed.
• Chomp: Every 10 seconds, 4% chance to chomp and provide +35% Progress Speed.
• Luck Bonus: Increases Luck by 20% for you and all nearby players.
