How to grapple in Saros

The Grapple is one of Saros's most satisfying movement tools, and the game's tutorial teases it without telling you when it actually arrives. Those purple floating machines you passed in the first two biomes? They're grapple points, and they'll stay dormant until you hit a specific story beat in the third area. Here's exactly how to get there and activate the ability.

How do you unlock the Grapple in Saros?

The Grapple unlocks automatically through story progression. You cannot miss it, and there's no side quest or hidden unlock condition. According to multiple sources covering Saros at launch, the ability becomes available at the start of the Shattered Descent, which is the game's third biome.

To reach Shattered Descent, you must first clear the first two biomes:

  • Shattered Rise (biome 1): Defeat the boss Prophet
  • Ancient Depths (biome 2): Defeat the boss Bastion

Once both bosses are down and you've watched the post-Bastion cutscene, the path to Shattered Descent opens up.

How to Get the Grapple

Here's the exact sequence:

  1. Defeat Prophet in the Shattered Rise to unlock access to the Ancient Depths.
  2. In the Ancient Depths, activate both terminals flanking the central vault to open the main vault door.
  3. Defeat Bastion (the second biome boss). The shotgun unlocked in this biome is a poor choice for this fight since the encounter rewards distance. Use the Jump Network Pads around the arena to dodge Bastion's yellow projectile ring attacks.
  4. Watch the cutscene after Bastion falls, then proceed forward into the Shattered Descent.
  5. Follow the story objective until you're sent back to the Passage. A cutscene triggers when you attempt to fix the item retrieved from the camp.
  6. Once your objective updates to return to Shattered Descent, fast travel using the World Dial feature (Primary button).
  7. On your second visit to the biome, follow the objective marker to a Soltari terminal. Interact with it to receive the Grapple.

How do you use grapple points in Saros?

Once you have the ability, using it is straightforward. Approach any purple grapple point in the environment and press Triangle when the button prompt appears on screen. The prompt only shows up when you're within range, so if you don't see it, move closer.

Before unlocking the Grapple, these points appear in the world but show no interaction prompt. After the unlock, they light up across all biomes, including areas you've already visited.

Where does the Grapple matter most?

The Grapple isn't just a traversal tool. It's actively required for surviving certain boss encounters, specifically the fight against Rhabdom in the Shattered Descent. Using grapple points during that fight to reposition is part of the intended strategy, not an optional shortcut.

Beyond boss arenas, grapple points are scattered through side areas across all three biomes. Many of the higher platforms that looked unreachable in the opening hours contain audio logs, text logs, and additional chests. Backtracking with the Grapple is worth the time.
