The persuasion mini-game looks so ...

Starfield's persuasion system is one of those mechanics that looks simple until you burn through all your turns on a red option and watch the whole thing collapse. The minigame has real stakes: succeed and you unlock new quest paths, save credits, or avoid a firefight entirely. Fail, and you're reloading or eating bullets. Here's everything you need to know to stop gambling and start winning.

How does Starfield's persuasion minigame work?

Whenever you spot a dialogue option tagged [Persuade], selecting it launches the persuasion minigame. Your goal is to fill every Persuasion bar displayed in the bottom-left corner of the screen before your turns run out. Each dialogue response you can pick carries a point value (shown as +1, +3, and so on), and those points only count toward filling the bars if the response lands successfully. Pick an option that fails, and you get zero points for that turn.

Every available response is color-coded by risk level, and this is the core of the system:

Green options carry a high success rate but fill only one or two bars. Orange responses strike a middle ground. Red options have a low success rate but can fill enough bars to complete the entire check in a single turn, which makes them tempting when you're running low on turns.

There's also a rare critical success outcome. Land one and it fills extra persuasion bars beyond what the option's point value would normally cover, potentially ending the check immediately in your favor.

info
Don't burn your green options early just for easy points. Saving at least one reliable green response for your final turn can bail you out if everything else has gone sideways.

What happens when turns run out?

You have a fixed number of turns to fill all the bars. If you can't fill them, the persuasion attempt ends in failure. There is one exception: if you're on your last turn and the option you pick succeeds but still doesn't complete the meter, you get a bonus turn rather than an immediate failure. This is a good reason to avoid going all-in on risky red options when you still have turns left and safer plays available.

Failing a persuasion check doesn't always mean the conversation ends badly, but it does mean you lose whatever benefit a successful persuasion would have unlocked. In some cases, like the encounter with Crimson Fleet Captain Brogan at the Kreet Research Lab, failing the check means Brogan and his crew open fire immediately, and a Crimson Fleet Ghost ship lands to reinforce them.

How to improve your persuasion chances

Any character can attempt persuasion checks, but without investment you'll be relying heavily on luck. These are the five methods that work:

1. Unlock and rank up the Persuasion Skill

The Persuasion Skill adds a flat percentage bonus to your success rate during checks. It increases success chances by 10% per rank, capping at a 50% bonus at Rank 4. If you're planning a talker build, this is the first skill worth prioritizing. Four starting Starfield backgrounds include Persuasion as a default skill, so your character creation choices matter here.

danger
The Persuasion Skill doesn't change the point values of dialogue options or the number of turns you get. It only improves the probability that a chosen option succeeds. You still need to pick strategically.

2. Read what NPCs say before and during the check

This one gets overlooked. NPCs often telegraph exactly how they want to be approached before the minigame starts. The Cydonia bartender during The Old Neighborhood mission actually says he expects you to guilt-trip him when you initiate the persuasion attempt. Picking the guilt-trip option works because the NPC told you it would. Pay attention to what characters say in normal dialogue before you hit [Persuade].

3. Drink alcohol before important conversations

Alcoholic drinks including wine, beer, and cocktails provide a small, temporary buff to Persuasion. The effect is short-lived, so time your drinking close to the conversation. If you want to craft your own supply, the Gastronomy Skill and associated research unlock that option.

4. Use Hippolyta or Paramour

Both Hippolyta and Paramour are chems that provide Persuasion buffs. Paramour's buff is both stronger and longer-lasting than Hippolyta's, making it the better pick for high-stakes checks. Neither is common in the world, but you can craft them at a Pharmaceutical Lab once you've invested in the Research Methods and Chemistry Skills in the Science category.

warning
Chem buffs are temporary. Pop them right before entering the conversation, not several minutes beforehand while you're still navigating menus.

5. Unlock the Negotiation Skill

The Negotiation Skill adds a different option to speech challenges: paying a bribe. It's not elegant, but it works when your Persuasion Skill is low and your credits aren't. Ranking up Negotiation reduces the cost of those bribes, making it a reasonable fallback for situations where you'd rather spend money than risk failure.

Should you lie to or fight Brogan?

The Brogan encounter at Kreet Research Lab is the first real persuasion test most players hit, and it's a useful example of how the risk-reward calculation plays out in practice. Choosing to lie to Brogan triggers a persuasion check: you have 3 turns to accumulate 4 points, with the extended-turn rule applying on the final turn if you succeed but fall short of the total.

Succeed and Brogan lets you leave without a fight. Fail (or skip the check entirely), and Brogan plus his crew attack immediately, with a Ghost ship landing to add more enemies to the fight. If you win the fight, Brogan's body drops a randomized but higher-level weapon than anything you're likely to have found by that point in the game.

Quick tips for winning persuasion checks

  • Stack buffs before the conversation starts. Drink alcohol, use Paramour or Hippolyta, then talk.
  • Save at least one green option for your last turn as insurance.
  • Listen to what the NPC says. They often hint at the right approach before the minigame begins.
  • Don't open with red options unless you're very close to the required point total and running out of turns.
  • If a critical success fires, it can end the check instantly regardless of where you are in the meter.
