Subnautica 2 drops you on the ocean planet Proteus with 100 HP and no shortage of ways to lose it. Hungry? You lose health. Thirsty? Same. Stumble into a hostile creature or a patch of extreme heat? Your health bar takes the hit. Survival Mode players need to understand every healing option available, because running out of HP is permanent and unforgiving. Here is every method that works.
What drains your health in Subnautica 2?
Before covering how to recover HP, it helps to know what depletes it. Your character starts with 100 HP and loses health from several sources:
- Starvation and dehydration each tick away -4 HP every time the food or water meter drops a notch.
- Environmental damage, including extreme heat, deals variable amounts depending on the hazard.
- Hostile creatures deal damage on contact, with the exception of Leviathans, which cause instant death by consuming your character whole.
- Oxygen deprivation darkens the screen progressively and kills your character if you cannot surface or find air in time.
The good news is that health regenerates naturally when your food and water stats are high. This passive regen exists, but it only works reliably when you are not in immediate danger. Do not count on it mid-combat or mid-dive.
The Lifepod's Fabricator is corrupted at the start of the game, so you cannot craft First Aid Kits until you build your own base. Plan your early healing around Medical Gel Sacs and any kits found in supply crates.

How to find and use Medical Gel Sacs
Medical Gel Sacs are your earliest and most accessible healing option. They come from underwater plants called Acidic Raions, they're look like a pink, brain-like plants with a glowing green stem in the center.
To harvest them:
- Equip your Survival Multitool and cut the sides of the Acidic Raion plant to collect Acidic Raion Pouches.
- Grab the glowing green central tip, which is the Medical Gel Sac itself.
- Consume it to restore +10 HP.
Ten health is not much in a crisis, but Medical Gel Sacs are renewable and scattered throughout the ocean floor. Learning where dense clusters of Acidic Raions grow near your base is worth the effort early on.
Keep several Medical Gel Sacs in your quick-access slots during early exploration. They will not save you from a Leviathan, but they cover the small chip damage that accumulates on longer dives.

How to craft and use First Aid Kits
Once you have a working Fabricator in your own base, First Aid Kits become your main healing tool. There are two recipes available in the Fabricator's Consumables tab:
First Aid Kit crafting recipes
The third recipe, available at the Processor machine rather than the Fabricator, lets you convert a single Medical Gel Sac directly into a +50 HP item without needing Fiber. That is a solid option when Fiber is scarce.
The Enhanced First Aid Kit fully restores your health from zero in one use, making it the best item to carry before dangerous dives or creature-heavy areas.

First Aid Kits also appear inside supply crates scattered near wreckage and abandoned bases. Check every crate you find during early exploration, since these pre-made kits are free healing before you have base crafting set up.
How does natural health regeneration work?
Passive health regeneration in Subnautica 2 is tied directly to your other survival stats. Keeping food and water levels high activates natural regen, which ticks your HP back up over time without consuming any items.
This method has two conditions that limit its usefulness:
- Your character must not be in immediate danger for regeneration to function reliably.
- If food or water drops low, health deteriorates instead of recovering, which can spiral quickly into death.
Think of passive regen as a recovery tool for between-dive downtime at your base, not a substitute for carrying actual healing items. Pair it with a solid food and water routine. For everything you need to know about managing hunger and thirst, the Subnautica 2 food, water, and digestion guide covers the full system in detail.
Staying alive goes beyond just healing
Healing is only one piece of the survival puzzle. Oxygen management is equally urgent, and the Subnautica 2 guide to replenishing and increasing max oxygen walks through Air Tanks, the Rebreather, and every trick for extending your dive time from the starting 45 seconds up to 120. Staying alive means keeping all your stats in check simultaneously, not just your HP.
For a broader look at surviving the opening hours of the game, the full Subnautica 2 guides collection covers everything from base building to creature encounters as the early access content continues to expand.
