The Blood of Dawnwalker Ultimate Beginner's Guide

The biggest mistake a new player can make in The Blood of Dawnwalker is assuming there is enough time to finish everything. Coen has 30 days and nights to save his family from Brencis, and several quests, dialogue choices, and upgrades move that deadline closer.

Free exploration does not consume time, though, so there is no need to rush blindly through Vale Sangora. A better start is to unlock travel points, build separate day and night loadouts, and learn which actions actually advance the clock.

Best Settings You Should Be Using

Directional combat can feel awkward during the opening hours. These settings make it easier to learn without removing the system entirely.

Auto Block is the most helpful option for beginners, but it should not replace manual blocking forever. A properly directed block is more efficient, and a well-timed Perfect Block creates an opening to counterattack without draining stamina.

Fast Travel and Movement

Wayside Shrines should be activated whenever Coen passes one. They serve as fast-travel points, storage locations, and places to manage character progression. Fast travel must begin at a shrine, so finding several connected locations is more helpful than uncovering one shrine far away from everything else.

The simplest exploration order is:

  1. Follow the main roads to locate nearby Wayside Shrines.
  2. Return at night and use Coen’s vampire traversal powers to climb Towers.
  3. Scout each Tower to reveal surrounding points of interest.
  4. Unlock Mercurial Fervour and Shapeshift to make trips between undiscovered locations faster.

Vale Sangora has 11 Towers. Clearing them early fills out the map and cuts down the time spent searching for vendors, activities, and other landmarks.

Mercurial Fervour provides faster movement through Witchcraft during the day. Shapeshift gives Coen a quicker travel form at night. One rank in each already makes a noticeable difference when a destination is not close to a shrine.

Best Early Skills to Get

Coen develops through Witchcraft, Swordmastery, and Vampirism. Many Witchcraft and Swordmastery upgrades require manuals before their nodes become available. These manuals can be purchased from the right vendor or found through activities, chests, and enemy drops.

Skill training may also consume a time segment. Players should prioritize upgrades that support their current loadout instead of purchasing every available node.

Witchcraft

Forager is a solid first upgrade for anyone who crafts regularly. It lets Coen gather more ingredients without adding extra harvesting stops to every trip. Medicus I and Medicus II become more helpful once harder fights start consuming healing items faster.

Ravenous Flock manuals come from A Pilgrimage for Power activities. Their locations can be found by following wind chimes toward Uriashi Sacred Stones. Inspecting each glyph costs time, so these activities are better worked into an existing route than chased all at once.

Swordmastery

Endless Effort is a safe first investment because stamina affects attacks, blocks, and dodges. Running out in the middle of an exchange leaves Coen with few ways to recover.

From there, the better choice depends on how the player fights:

  • Artery Strike delivers a critical attack with a chance to decapitate eligible enemies.
  • Perfect Riposte turns a Perfect Block into a guaranteed critical counter when the displayed attack direction is followed.
  • Perfect Block and Sustained Focus improve the flow and capacity of Activation Charges.
  • Master Fencer adds more Swordmastery ability slots, but it can wait until the existing slots are full.

Players interested in medium or heavy armor should also find the manuals for Second Skin I and Second Skin II. Heavier armor carries stat penalties until these proficiency perks are unlocked.

Vampirism

Vampirism progression works differently. It is tied to Corruption rather than manuals, and Coen gains Corruption by drinking blood.

Voracious Bite supports this path by restoring health and building Corruption. A sword-focused player can spend fewer points on claw upgrades without weakening Coen’s ability to fight at night.

Day and Night Loadouts

The game keeps separate setups for Coen’s human and vampire forms. Equipment, consumables, and abilities should be checked on both sides of the day-night cycle.

A balanced daytime quick-slot setup should cover four basic needs:

  • Immediate healing
  • Gradual health recovery
  • Stamina recovery
  • A damage or defense buff

Feeding handles much of Coen’s nighttime healing, but a backup consumable is still safer than depending on Voracious Bite in every encounter.

Unlocking an ability does not automatically equip it. Coen has four daytime and four nighttime quick slots. Passive abilities must also be enabled in the Active Abilities menu before their effects apply.

Time Management

The 30-day limit is not a continuously running timer. Roaming the map and fighting ordinary enemies do not spend segments. Time moves forward when the game marks an action with a cost.

Each full cycle contains 16 segments: eight during the day and eight at night. When an action uses the final daytime segments, the remaining cost carries over into night and changes Coen into his vampire form.

Optional interactions are not automatically a waste. Spending another segment with a character may improve a relationship, open a quest, or lead to better rewards. The problem comes from accepting every opportunity without checking what it costs.

Grouping nearby objectives keeps the schedule under control. A manual save before a major choice also gives players a way back if a harmless-looking decision consumes more time than expected.

Combat Tips for Beginners

Combat becomes much easier once players stop treating it like a button-mashing system. The basic rhythm works like this:

  1. Watch the directional indicator. It shows where the next attack is coming from.
  2. Block in the matching direction. Waiting until the final moment triggers a Perfect Block.
  3. Counter while the enemy is open. Perfect Riposte can turn this opening into a guaranteed critical hit.
  4. Spend Activation Charges regularly. Remaining at the charge cap wastes any additional charge Coen could generate.
  5. Reposition against groups. Coen should move out of the center and keep as many attackers on-screen as possible.

Unblockable attacks must be dodged regardless of the selected guard direction. Against several enemies, creating space is usually safer than trying to Perfect Block every hit while surrounded.

At night, Shadowstep can move Coen behind a target or close a gap before the enemy responds. Voracious Bite restores health and adds Corruption once an opening appears. Swords remain available after dark, so a strong Swordmastery build does not need to switch to claws.

The main combat habit is simple: read the attack, block late, take the counter, and use active abilities before the charge meter fills. That timing will carry a beginner further than chasing higher armor numbers without learning the directional system.
