The bowling minigame in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is one of the more satisfying activities your Miis can invite you to join. Five of them line up like bowling pins, you get three balls, and the goal is simple: knock every single one down. The catch is that the controls strip out everything you'd expect from a real bowling game, which trips up a lot of players early on.

How does the bowling minigame work?

When a Mii wants to bowl with you, a green lines prompt appears above their head. Talk to them and select Let's Play before the prompt disappears, or you'll miss the session entirely. Once you're in, the game gives you a brief description before dropping you onto the lane.

You control the ball's direction using the left joystick, then press A to release it. That's the full control set. There is no power mechanic and no spin mechanic in this minigame. The ball moves at a fixed speed, and its behavior depends entirely on where you aim and how it ricochets off the Miis it strikes.

What's the best strategy to win the bowling minigame?

The most reliable method is to aim between the gaps of the Miis rather than directly at any single one. The game calculates hits based on the area the ball covers and how it bounces off each Mii it contacts. Sending the ball into a gap means it clips two Miis at once and can ricochet into others behind them.

Here's how to approach each of your three balls:

  • Ball 1: Treat it like a real bowling strike attempt. Aim between the center Mii and the one immediately to its left or right. A well-placed first ball can take out three or four Miis if the bounce sequence works in your favor.
  • Ball 2: If you have a cluster of remaining Miis standing near each other, aim into the gap between them. The same bounce logic applies.
  • Ball 3: If the surviving Miis are spread apart with no useful gap between them, aim directly at the center of whichever individual Mii you're targeting. At this point you're cleaning up singles.

One additional tactic: shooting at Miis from the side rather than head-on can cause them to fall diagonally into neighboring Miis, triggering additional knockdowns. This diagonal collapse is worth considering when you have a tight cluster sitting at an angle.

How do you unlock the bowling minigame?

The bowling minigame is not something you can trigger on demand. A random Mii on your island will invite you to play it as you progress through the game. You cannot select it from a menu or force it to appear. When the green lines prompt shows up above a Mii's icon or when you spot them around the island with that indicator, interact with them immediately and choose Let's Play.

Missing the prompt means missing that particular session, so check in on your Miis regularly.

What rewards do you get from bowling?

Winning the bowling minigame earns you a choice between three treasure boxes of different sizes. Each box contains a random treasure. The prize tiers break down as follows:

The larger the box you pick, the higher the potential value of what's inside, though the contents are randomized. Treasures can be sold for money to fund food, clothing, and other island needs.

The Proposal Shooter minigame is worth particular attention since failing it delays a Mii's proposal. If you want the full picture on that mechanic, the how to get married guide covers the shooter minigame and what happens after a successful proposal.

Does it matter if you win or lose?

For progression purposes, not dramatically. Both outcomes give you a treasure. The difference is quality: winners get to choose from three boxes (small, medium, or large), while losers receive a single low-value consolation item. Playing every session you're offered is the smart move regardless of whether you think you'll win.

Minigames also contribute to Mii happiness and leveling, so accepting every invitation has compounding benefits beyond just the treasure rewards.
