Introduction

Trine Enchanted Edition takes the beloved 2009 physics puzzle platformer from Frozenbyte and rebuilds it with upgraded visuals, mid-level saving, and online co-op for up to three players. Three heroes, one mysterious artifact, and 15 levels packed with contraptions, skeletons, and cleverly hidden secrets. The core hook is still the same: swap between a wizard, a knight, and a thief to tackle the same obstacle in completely different ways.

Overview

Trine Enchanted Edition is Frozenbyte's rebuilt version of the original 2009 side-scrolling action platformer, running on the Trine 2 engine with updated visuals and a handful of quality-of-life additions that make the original game significantly more approachable. The premise is straightforward: three heroes, Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief, are bound together by a magical artifact called the Trine and must work through a ruined kingdom overrun by the undead.

The kingdom's backstory sets a melancholy tone. After the king died without an heir, political instability cracked the realm open, and an undead army swept in to fill the void. Most inhabitants fled. The three heroes didn't. That setup gives each of the 15 levels a distinct atmosphere, from the Astral Academy to the Crystal Caverns, Dragon Graveyard, and Ruins of the Perished.

Gameplay and mechanics

The physics-based puzzle design is where Trine earns its reputation. Each character brings a completely different toolkit to the same level geometry:

  • Amadeus summons and levitates objects to build makeshift platforms
  • Pontius smashes through obstacles with the Storm Hammer and absorbs damage
  • Zoya fires arrows from range and swings across gaps with a grappling hook

Switching between them mid-level is instantaneous, and the game actively rewards creative solutions. Stacking boxes the wizard conjured, then swinging over them as the thief, then smashing the wall blocking the exit as the knight feels genuinely satisfying. The fully interactive physics engine means almost nothing in the environment is static decoration.

Characters earn experience points and can upgrade their abilities, and collectible items scattered across levels further modify stats. Hidden chests reward thorough exploration in every stage.

What does co-op add to the experience?

The Enchanted Edition introduced online co-op alongside local play, supporting up to three players simultaneously. In multiplayer, each player controls one hero permanently rather than swapping freely, which fundamentally changes how puzzles get solved. Coordination becomes the puzzle. Two players arguing about the right way to stack boxes while the third is already swinging across the gap is, somehow, both frustrating and the best version of the game.

Mid-level saving, another addition exclusive to the Enchanted Edition, means sessions can be as short or long as the situation demands without losing progress.

Visual and audio design

The visual upgrade from the Trine 2 engine gives the Enchanted Edition noticeably richer lighting and particle effects compared to the original release. The hand-painted aesthetic holds up well, with each environment carrying its own color palette and mood. The Dragon Graveyard and Forsaken Dungeons in particular have a genuine sense of weight and atmosphere that the original's lower-fidelity assets couldn't fully deliver.

Ari Pulkkinen's 19-track soundtrack is a consistent highlight. The orchestral compositions shift between whimsical and tense with the level design, and the audio work remains one of the more memorable parts of the package.

Content and replayability

The Enchanted Edition also bundles the original unmodified version of Trine for Windows and Mac, selectable from the launcher. That's a genuine bonus for players curious about the differences, or those who want the original subtitle language options (Finnish, Turkish, Portuguese, and Romanian) that didn't carry over to the new build. Three difficulty settings accommodate players at different skill levels, and Steam Achievements add structured goals for completionists hunting every secret chest across all 15 levels.
