Windrose Guide: All Discoveries in Cursed Swamp

The Cursed Swamp is the third biome you unlock in Windrose, arriving after the Coastal Jungles and Foothills. The step up in difficulty is real: late-game enemies patrol the region, and the game gives you zero hints about what materials you need to trigger each discovery. That opacity is frustrating when you're standing at a workstation wondering why nothing new is unlocking. This guide maps out every discovery and resource in the biome, where to find each one, and exactly what it opens up for you.

How does the discovery system work in Cursed Swamp?

The Cursed Swamp discoveries split into three tiers: Key, Major, and Other. Key and Major discoveries are the ones that matter most, since they unlock new workstation recipes and crafting stations. Other discoveries tend to yield decorative or lower-priority items.

You trigger a discovery simply by obtaining the material for the first time. The problem is that the biome does not signal which items exist until you physically pick one up, making a complete list like this one genuinely useful rather than optional reading.

All Key Discoveries in the Cursed Swamp

These five discoveries are the highest priority. Each one opens up crafting stations or high-value gear you'll need to progress.

Ancient Scraps are the single most impactful Key discovery. Mining them from Ancient Ruins unlocks three crafting stations at once, including the Large Smelting Furnace and the Jeweler's Bench, which you need for higher-tier gear. Prioritize these ruins early.

Essence Arborum has a two-step acquisition: you first need Plague Wood (a Major discovery), then smelt it to produce Essence Arborum. This chain is easy to miss if you don't know Plague Wood exists.

All Major discoveries in the Cursed Swamp

Major discoveries cover the bulk of the biome's food, farming, and consumable recipes.

Tear of Sorrow deserves special attention. The primary source is the High Priestess, the major boss of the Cursed Swamp biome. It also drops from the Plague Witch and Plague Crusher, so you have multiple ways to farm it once you're comfortable with those enemy types. The unlock, Great Healing Potion, makes the grind worth it.

Mysterious Spice is the trickiest Major discovery to track down consistently. According to both sources, it drops from the Plague Witch and appears in Ancient Chests, but it also turns up at Traders and in Priestess Ruins, giving you four possible acquisition routes.

Other discoveries: what they unlock

These two items sit in the lowest tier but are still worth knowing about.

What's the fastest way to get all Cursed Swamp discoveries?

After mapping out the full list, a few efficient routes stand out:

  • Start at Ancient Ruins to grab Ancient Scraps immediately. The three workstation unlocks (Large Smelting Furnace, Bellows, Jeweler's Bench) are gating your entire crafting progression.
  • Kill Crocodiles on the way to everything else. Crocodile Hide Piece, Crocodile Tail, Tear of Sorrow, and Crocodile Head all drop from the same enemy types. You'll fill multiple slots simultaneously.
  • Farm Corrupted Trees for both Plague Wood and Tar in the same pass. These two Major discoveries come from overlapping sources.
  • Check Fertilized Soil near Ruin with Flowerbed landmarks for Leek and Beans. These are farming discoveries, so you need to locate the right terrain feature rather than hunt enemies.
  • Return at night for Fireflies near Cocoplum bushes once you've cleared the area during the day.

Final Thoughts

Windrose is currently in early access, and both sources confirm that more items may be added to the Cursed Swamp biome in future updates. The table above reflects what's available based on current builds. If you notice new discoveries appearing that aren't listed here, that's the game expanding its content rather than an error in this guide.
