The Large Smelting Furnace is one of the most important crafting upgrades you can unlock in Windrose. Once you push into tougher biomes and start handling advanced materials, the basic setup stops cutting it. This station handles the heavy lifting for ingot production and opens up gear upgrades that simply aren't possible without it. Here's exactly how to get it built and running.

What do you need to build the Large Smelting Furnace?

Before you can construct this furnace, you need to unlock Mire metal smelting. That unlock happens once you've discovered both the Blacksmith Bellows and the Jeweller's Table, which show up as you explore deeper into the game world. Most materials tied to this station, including Ancient Scraps, come from the Cursed Swamps biome.

Once you've met that progression gate, the build cost is simple:

MaterialQuantity Required
Hewn Stone20
Foothills Iron Ingots10
Clay20

The construction itself takes no time once you've gathered what you need. No multi-stage assembly or complicated steps involved.

Where should you place the Large Smelting Furnace?

Location is more critical than you might think. Two requirements must be met simultaneously:

  • The furnace has to sit outside your base or under a shelter (not within fully enclosed walls)
  • It has to be within Bonfire range

Miss either of those and the station won't activate. Map out your base design before you start building so you don't waste resources moving things around later.

What can you craft in the Large Smelting Furnace?

Once it's running, the furnace converts raw materials into four ingot types, each linked to different progression tiers:

  • Copper Ingots
  • Essence Arborum
  • Foothills Iron Ingots
  • Mire Metal Ingots

The Mire Metal Ingots are why you build this thing. They're the high-tier material required for stronger gear once you're working through the Cursed Swamps. The other outputs keep earlier recipes accessible, so the furnace stays useful across multiple stages of the game.

How does the Large Smelting Furnace compare to earlier stations?

This furnace ranks above your basic crafting setups in the tech tree. The big advantage is Mire Metal Ingot processing, which earlier stations can't handle. The downside is the placement restriction: you can't just drop this one anywhere indoors. It demands outdoor space and Bonfire proximity, which means you need to plan your base layout more carefully.
