Mysterious Book (Nintendo Switch ...

The Scatterpuff Habitat is the third level in Chapter 1: The Wildwoods in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and it's where the game starts teaching you how environmental manipulation works. The white puff creatures at the center of this level can sprout on grass, rocks, water, and trees, and every puzzle here hinges on spreading them in the right place at the right time. There are 3 Smiley Flowers to collect and a large list of Discoveries to unlock, including a Big Discovery that ends the level.

What do Scatterpuffs actually do?

Scatterpuffs are small white fluffy creatures that spread spores when disturbed. They can sprout on nearly any surface, including grass, rocks, water, and trees, and they change form depending on where they land. A Ground Pound on a large Scatterpuff breaks it into smaller ones and scatters them across nearby surfaces. You can also use a tongue flick to send them flying, or roll them into a tumbleweed to create a giant fluffy ball. Understanding these interactions is the key to everything in this habitat.

info
Spreading Scatterpuffs on grass platforms first makes them grow larger, which gives you more material to work with for later puzzles. Don't rush past the grass sections.

All 3 Scatterpuff Smiley Flower locations

The Scatterpuff Habitat holds 3 Smiley Flowers. Two are hidden in areas that require creative use of the Scatterpuff mechanics, and the third rewards you for breaking a statue on the right side of the map.

Smiley Flower 1: Break the stone statue

Head to the right side of the map where you'll find a stone statue. Spread Scatterpuff spores onto it until it's fully covered, then Ground Pound it to smash it open. The Smiley Flower pops out once the statue breaks., This is technically the most straightforward of the three, but you need enough spores on the statue before the Ground Pound will work.

Smiley Flower 2: Reach the platform above the sleeping creature's cave

Find the platform above the cave where a larger sleeping creature is settled. Spread Scatterpuff spores onto the floating shrub nearby. Once large Scatterpuff balls grow on the shrub, use them as platforms to jump up to a higher ledge where the Smiley Flower is waiting. The key here is making sure the shrub is well covered before you attempt the jump

Smiley Flower 3: Drain the pond and roll the puff ball

This one takes the most steps. First, spread Scatterpuffs near the underground pond to absorb the water and drop the water level. Once the pond is mostly drained, push the wooden ball through the Scatterpuffs to cover it and create a giant white puff ball. Roll this ball down the dried-up pond to break open a hidden area at the bottom. The Smiley Flower is inside.

warning
If you spread too many Scatterpuffs into the water before building the ball, you may not have enough material left to make the ball large enough. Drain the water first, then build the ball.

How to find the Golden Bug

The Golden Bug in this habitat sits above the starting point, perched at the top of a large withered tree on the west side of the level. Spread Scatterpuffs onto the tree to grow platforms, then climb up to reach it. Dropping Scatterpuffs directly on the Golden Bug earns you extra tokens. This is also tied to the Discovery "Even grows on a golden bug" and "Soaked up a golden bug's tokens?!"

All Scatterpuff Discoveries

The Scatterpuff Habitat has a large pool of Discoveries to unlock. Most are tied to experimenting with the Scatterpuff's various interactions. The table below covers the main-level Discoveries and how to trigger them

The Big Discovery that ends the level requires you to spread Scatterpuffs through the hole in the tunnel on the far left, covering the large creature inside. Use your tongue to push the puffs further in, and throw eggs to disperse them deeper. Once the creature is fully covered, it flees and the level concludes.

Alternate level Discoveries

After completing the Detonut Habitat, an alternate version of the Scatterpuff Habitat unlocks. This version introduces Detonuts to the level and adds two exclusive Discoveries.

  • Unfluffed the Scatterpuff: Throw an object at an engulfed creature to strip the Scatterpuffs off it.
  • Big boom by avoiding the Scatterpuff!: Drain the underground pool, then use a small Detonut to blow up the giant Detonut at the start. Keep the small Detonut away from any Scatterpuffs along the way. You can cool it down using the puddle created by pounding a blue Scatterpuff halfway through.

The Crazee Dayzee Discovery in this habitat, "No wilting flowers! Bountiful and blooming," requires you to bloom all buds using a Crazee Dayzee while actively preventing Scatterpuffs from destroying those same buds. These two objectives conflict, so save this one for a separate attempt where you focus on controlling Scatterpuff spread.
